Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical thinking processes of fifth-grade elementary school students in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problems based on Alan H. Schoenfeld's theory. A descriptive qualitative method was employed involving 4 student subjects selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via written tests using Least Common Multiple (LCM) word problems alongside documentation. The data analysis utilized Schoenfeld's five problem-solving stages: reading, analysis, exploration, implementation, and verification. The results indicate that students effectively and systematically navigated all five stages. Generally, the students successfully identified the main problem information, linked it to the LCM concept, selected the prime factorization strategy, performed accurate procedural calculations, and verified the accuracy of their final answers. These findings demonstrate that Schoenfeld's framework is highly effective for mapping how elementary students apply higher-order reasoning to solve contextual, non-routine mathematical problems.

Abstract

Problem-solving ability is one of the essential competencies that students should develop in mathematics learning. However, many students still experience difficulties in solving problems that require reasoning and the application of various solution strategies. This study aimed to analyze elementary school students' problem-solving abilities in solving open-ended word problems based on Polya's theory. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving four sixth-grade students of SDN Sogo 01 as the research subjects. Data were collected through a written test consisting of one open-ended word problem, and the results were analyzed based on Polya's four stages of problem solving: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back. The findings revealed that all participants were able to understand the problem and successfully implement their solution plans. At the devising a plan stage, three participants were able to develop systematic solution strategies and apply more than one solution method, while one participant was less accurate in selecting an appropriate strategy. At the looking-back stage, three participants verified their solutions, whereas one participant did not complete the verification process. Therefore, the students' problem-solving abilities based on Polya's theory were generally categorized as good. Nevertheless, students still require further practice in developing systematic solution strategies and verifying both the problem-solving process and the final solutions, particularly when solving open-ended word problems

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mathematical problem-solving skills of elementary school students regarding the volume of three-dimensional shapes based on Polya’s steps. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with five fifth-grade students from SDN 1 Mojo selected based on their problem-solving ability test results. Data were collected through written tests and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that students’ abilities varied at each stage of Polya’s model. Some students were able to understand the problem and formulate a plan accurately but still made errors during the execution stage, particularly in calculations and in understanding the concepts of diameter and radius. In addition, most students did not thoroughly check their answers, making the checking stage the least mastered. Therefore, students’ mathematical problem-solving skills need to be improved, particularly in the execution and checking stages.

Abstract

Computational Thinking is an essential skill in mathematics learning that enables students to solve problems logically and systematically. This study aimed to describe the Computational Thinking process of elementary school students through solving open-ended mathematics problems on plane geometry. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving five fourth-grade students of SDN Ngadirejo 02 selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a written test consisting of one open-ended problem and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings showed that students' Computational Thinking abilities varied across the four indicators. Two students achieved the decomposition indicator, while three students had not achieved it optimally. Four students met the pattern recognition and abstraction indicators, whereas one student had not. All students demonstrated the algorithmic thinking indicator. The findings indicate that decomposition was the most challenging indicator in solving open-ended mathematics problems.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the types of errors made by fifth-grade elementary school students in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)-based mathematics word problems on composite plane figures using Newman’s Error Analysis. The analysis stages include reading, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and encoding. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with four students as the subjects. Data were collected through a written test in the form of HOTS essay questions and documentation of students’ work. The results showed that students’ errors were more dominant in the process skills and encoding stages. Process skills errors were caused by a lack of accuracy in performing arithmetic operations, while encoding errors occurred because students did not write conclusions, measurement units, and currency symbols completely. Therefore, students’ errors were influenced by computational accuracy and their ability to communicate final answers. These findings indicate that students need practice in rechecking calculations and writing answers according to the problem context.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical problem-solving abilities of fourth-grade elementary school students in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problems on the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM) based on John Dewey’s problem-solving theory. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving five fourth-grade elementary school students selected through criterion sampling. Data were collected through essay tests and documentation, while data analysis was conducted using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities were generally categorized as good. Four subjects were able to complete all stages of John Dewey’s problem-solving process, including identifying problems, defining problems, developing solutions, testing solutions, and drawing conclusions. Meanwhile, one subject experienced difficulties in the solution-testing stage because not all available information in the problem was utilized. These findings indicate that John Dewey’s problem-solving stages can systematically describe students’ mathematical thinking processes and can be used as a reference for improving mathematical problem-solving abilities in elementary school learning.
