Abstract

Students' problem-solving skills remains a challenge because mathematics instruction often emphasizes procedures over creativity and rarely incorporates students' cultural contexts. This study explores the impact of Project-Based Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) on students' creative thinking and problem- solving skill, as well as teacher's perceptions of cultural integration in mathematics instruction. This explanatory sequential design study involved a class of 15 eighth- grade students and a mathematics teacher. Data were collected through observations, project assignments, tests, and questionnaires. The results showed that students' creative thinking indicatorsfluency, flexibility, and originalitywere in the excellent category, while elaboration increased from 79.17 (good) to 87.5 (excellent). Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in students' problem- solving skills, with an average pre-test score of 49.33 increasing to 64.33 (p < 0.05). The teacher responded that project-based CRT helped students develop more effective problem-solving strategies. These findings suggest that project-based CRT can foster students' creative thinking and problem-solving skill in mathematics. Teachers are encouraged to design problem-solving activities that connect mathematical concepts to students' cultural experiences to foster deeper understanding and more equitable learning opportunities

Abstract

Abstrak: Komunikasi matematis merupakan keterampilan yang sangat penting bagi mahasiswa matematika. Namun, banyak mahasiswa masih mengalami kesulitan dalam mengkomunikasikan ide-ide matematis mereka secara efektif. Penelitian sebelumnya menunjukkan bahwa salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan kesulitan ini adalah kurangnya pengalaman dalam menerapkan konsep-konsep matematika dalam konteks yang nyata. Geometri Euclid, sebagai salah satu cabang matematika yang fundamental, seringkali diajarkan secara abstrak dan kurang menarik bagi mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan HandOut geometri Euclid yang berbasis proyek dengan harapan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi matematis mahasiswa. Metode yang digunakan adalah Research and Development dengan menggunakan model ADDIE. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes dan wawancara. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester tiga jurusan pendidikan matematika Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. Pengembangan HandOut geometri Euclid untuk menumbuhkan komunikasi matematis mahasiswa berbasis proyek dilakukan melalui tahapan analisis, Desain, Pengembangan, Implementasi, dan Evaluasi. Secara umum, hasil pengembangan HandOut ini memenuhi kriteria valid, praktis, dan efektif. Hasil yang diperoleh yaitu kejelasan penyampaian, kelengkapan penyelesaian, dan interpretasi hasil mendapatkan hasil baik. Sedangkan untuk penggunaan model dan representasi ide pada kategori cukup. Posisi penelitian  ini berada dalam tren pengembangan bahan ajar matematika yang inovatif, khususnya HandOut, yang tidak hanya menyajikan materi tetapi juga dirancang untuk meningkatkan komunikasi matematis mahasiswa.  Kata kunci: HandOut, komunikasi matematis, geometri Euclid, berbasis proyek Abstract: Mathematical communication is an essential skill for mathematics students. However, many students still experience difficulties in communicating their mathematical ideas effectively. Previous research has shown that one of the factors causing this difficulty is the lack of experience in applying mathematical concepts in a real context. Euclid geometry, one of the fundamental branches of mathematics, is often taught abstractly and less appealing to students. Therefore, this study aims to develop a project-based Euclid geometry HandOut to improve students' mathematical communication skills. The method used is Research and Development using the ADDIE model. The instruments used are tests and interviews. The subjects in this study were third-semester students majoring in mathematics education at Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The development of Euclid geometry HandOuts to foster project-based student mathematical communication through the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The results of developing this HandOut meet the validity, practicality, and effectiveness criteria. The results obtained are clarity of delivery, completeness of completion, and interpretation of results, which get good results for using models and representing ideas in the sufficient category. The position of this research is in the trend of developing innovative mathematics teaching materials, especially HandOuts, which not only present material but are also designed to improve students' mathematical communication.  Keywords: HandOut, mathematical communication, Euclid geometry, project-based
