Abstract

This study was intended to construct a Pacu Jalur ethnic-based contextual model, a learning model developed based on the stages of Pacu Jalur Ethno. This study was a research and development (R&D) study using the Borg & Gall stages. The research was carried out until the product development stage, which involved designing a learning model based on Pacu Jalur Ethno. The resulting product was then validated by experts to determine the appropriateness of the Pacu Jalur Ethno-based contextual model for classroom use. Data were collected through literature review, interviews, observations, and documentation. Based on the findings, the Pacu Jalur Ethno-based contextual model was deemed suitable for implementation in the learning process using the following syntax: stage 1, planning (merencanakan); stage 2, doing the tasks (membuek jalur); stage 3, discussion (bapacu); and stage 4, closing (panutuik). The Pacu Jalur ethnic-based contextual model illustrated that learning activities could integrate local wisdom relevant to the environment where the learning took place. Consequently, the learning process became more concrete by linking concepts to students’ daily lives.

Abstract

The development of critical reading and critical thinking skills is essential in teacher education, particularly for pre-service elementary school teachers who are expected to evaluate information critically and guide students in higher-order literacy practices. The increasing use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) in higher education provides opportunities to support students’ engagement with academic texts. However, limited research has examined how LMS engagement relates to students’ intention to participate in critical reading activities within teacher education contexts. The present study examines the relationship between LMS engagement and pre-service (PPG) students’ intention to engage in critical reading, as measured by the Critical Reading Intention Scale (CRIS), based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). A quantitative survey design was employed involving 109 pre-service teacher students from three universities in Indonesia. Data were collected via an online questionnaire that measured LMS usability and critical reading intention. The data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical analysis. The results indicate a statistically significant relationship between LMS engagement and students’ critical reading intention (p < 0.05). These findings elucidate that LMS-supported learning environments may be associated with students’ attitudes, perceived norms, and perceived control regarding critical reading activities. The study highlights the potential role of LMS-based instructional design in supporting critical reading engagement in pre-service teacher education.

Abstract

Meaningful learning has become a central concern in contemporary primary Education, particularly in Social Studies, to foster students’ social understanding and civic awareness rather than mere content acquisition. However, empirical evidence on how meaningful Social Studies learning is enacted in primary classrooms remains limited, especially in Indonesia. This study aims to explore how meaningful Social Studies learning is implemented and experienced in Indonesian primary schools through a qualitative multiple-case study conducted at SD 004 and SD 012 in Salo. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers, students, and principals, and document analysis. In addition, data were analyzed thematically using an interactive qualitative analysis approach. The findings reveal that meaningful Social Studies learning is shaped by the degree of contextualization, student interaction, and teachers’ pedagogical interpretations. Schools that integrated local social contexts, inquiry-oriented instruction, and dialogic classroom practices demonstrated higher levels of student engagement, social meaning-making, and perceived relevance of learning. In contrast, teacher-centered instruction constrained opportunities for meaningful engagement and limited learning outcomes to content mastery. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that meaningful learning in primary Social Studies is a pedagogical achievement rooted in contextual and interactional practices rather than curriculum policy alone. The findings highlight the essentials of teacher agency and context-responsive pedagogy in strengthening meaningful Social Studies learning.
