Abstract

Background Neonatal infections cause more than 550,000 deaths each year worldwide. Sepsis is a serious neonatal infection, defined as a severe form of infection that causes organ dysfunction. The incidence of neonatal sepsis in Dr. H. Abdul Moeloek Hospital, Lampung increased by 25% from 2017 to 2018 and by 30% from 2018 to 2019. Inappropriate use of antibiotics as therapy can lead to bacterial resistance to the medication. Understanding the most common bacterial patterns and using the guidance of antibiotic sensitivity tests can help health workers determine the empirical antibiotics needed to achieve optimal management, especially in neonatal sepsis patients. Objective To identify bacteria and their antibiotic sensitivity patterns in neonatal sepsis patients at Dr. H. Abdul Moeloek Hospital, Lampung between January and June 2024. Method  Descriptive study was conducted using medical record data from neonates suspected of having sepsis in Dr. H. Abdul Moeloek Hospital Lampung between January and June 2024. Blood culture data and antibiotic sensitivity testing was obtained from medical records. Results Of 65 blood culture of neonates suspected of having sepsis, 31 results were positive (47.6%). The most common microorganisms found were Klebsiella pneumoniae (23%), Burkholderia cepacia (19%), Acinetobacter baumannii (10%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10%), Enterococcus faecium (10%) Staphylococcus aureus (10%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (6%), Enterococcus faecalis (6%), Escherichia coli (3%), and Enterobacter cloacae (3%). Based on the sensitivity data calculated using weighted averages, ciprofloxacin (64.7%) and tigecycline (61.1%) showed highest sensitivity across more than five bacterial species. In contrast, ampicillin/sulbactam (96.0%), gentamicin (94.2%), and ceftriaxone (87.7%) had the highest resistance rates. Conclusion The most common bacteria causing neonatal sepsis were Klebsiella pneumoniae and Burkholderia cepacia. Among more than five bacterial species, the highest overall sensitivity was observed to ciprofloxacin and tigecycline, while the highest resistance rates were observed to ampicillin/sulbactam, gentamicin, and ceftriaxone.

Abstract

Placement of goats of various ages and the number of animals that exceed the maximum limit in one cage can cause the spread of diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, etc. One of them can cause pneumonia. Dirt and extreme temperatures in East Lampung are feared to increase the growth of bacteria that cause pneumonia. The purpose of this research was to determine the type of pneumonia that infects and the differences between the histopathological organs of the healthy qurban goats and those infected with pneumonia. This research was conducted in October-November 2019 at the Pathology Laboratory of the Veterinary Institute of Lampung. About 13 samples of lung organ of goat qurban (Capra aegagrus hircus) were taken from the Baburahman mosque of Tulus Rejo Village, Pekalongan District, East Lampung. The results of the study found 6 samples of positive qurban goat lungs infected with pneumonia, with the characteristics of inflammatory cells accompanied by thickening of the septa alveoli, edema, and the presence of hemorrhage. Based on observations, the most infecting types of pneumonia are pulmonary edema and peri-bronchial edema

Abstract

Linezolid is a very potent treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis, but it has some side effects. Patients with drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis may experience anemia as a side effect of taking the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis medication Linezolid. A 58-year-old man's primary complaint in one case reported to RSUD dr. H. Abdul Moeloek Lampung was a weakness. The diagnosis was made based on anamnesis, a physical examination, and supporting examinations. Treatment was given both pharmacologically and non-pharmacologically, including the intervention to discontinue Linezolid. Although linezolid-based combination therapy in program conditions is associated with favorable outcomes, side effects should be monitored closely, which may require discontinuation of the drug and taking appropriate steps to treat side effects.

Abstract

Antioxidant is a complex inhibit, prevent or dampen the reactions of free radicals and oxidants, as well as to prevent tissue damage. Antioxidant works by donating one of its electron to oxidant compounds thereby inhibiting the activity of these oxidant compounds. An imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals, where free radicals are more prevalent, can damage molecular organisms and cause oxidative stress that triggers damage to body cells. Oxidative damage to DNA triggers mutations that initiates cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorder, autoimmune diseases, aging processes and several hereditary diseases. Currently, the use of natural antioxidants as traditional treatments is widely consumed by the community. Natural antioxidants are found in several plant sources, it is known to be more affordable and have lower side effects, making it as popular treatment choice in the community. One of the plants with a high antioxidant content is the water apple leaf (Syzygium aqueum) which rich in flavonoids, phenolics, and tannins. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) is a common method to measure antioxidant activity, it works with the principle of hydrogen capture from antioxidants by free radicals. The parameter IC50 is used to represents the sample concentration required to capture 50% of DPPH radicals. Several studies using the DPPH method have shown that water apple leaves have strong antioxidant activity, indicated by its low IC50 value. The lower the IC50 value, the stronger the antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Abstract

Communities have long recognized the sugar palm (Arenga pinnata Merr.) as a plant that produces various economically valuable products, particularly for the craft and food industries; however, its development and cultivation have received relatively little attention. In Sidokaton Village, Gisting District, Tanggamus Regency, the sugar palm is one of the leading local commodities widely cultivated by farmers. Most farmers process sugar palm into palm sugar and kolang-kaling, while the sap is commonly used only as a fresh beverage with a low selling price that fluctuates significantly during the harvest season. This condition highlights the need for innovations in utilizing sugar palm sap to increase its added value for farmers. This community service activity introduces an innovation in processing sugar palm sap into Nata de Legen as an alternative to nata de coco. This innovation aims to enhance the community’s knowledge and skills regarding product diversification of sugar palm and to encourage increased income through higher-value processed products. There was an increase in public knowledge about processing and utilizing palm sap to produce the economically valuable nata de legen. The average increase in knowledge among training participants was 17.33 points. The training activities are expected to serve as an initial step in the development of sustainable local resource–based enterprises in Sidokaton Village.
