Abstract

Mango is one of the plants which have a lot of benefits in pharmacology. Total phenol in its peel is higher than in its flesh with the main component is mangiferin and quercetin which known have activity to inhibit cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) enzyme. The inhibition of COX-2 leads to the decrease of the production of prostaglandin (PgE2) so it can reduce pain which marked by the decrease of paw licking time on mice induced by formalin. Formalin-induced pain is divided into two phase: early phase at 0-5th minutes and late phase at 15-30th minutes. The aim of this research was to know the effect of Arumanis mango peel extract to decrease the paw licking time in white male mice. The research design was true experimental. The result of analyses used One Way Anova shows that there were significant difference in each treatment groups with significance p < 0,05. The LSD analysis on late phase showed no significant difference between the fifth treatment group and the positive control group in LSD test. It can be concluded that arumanis mango peel extract has equal effect with natrium diclofenac in decreasing paw licking time on late phase in dosage 26 mg/g. Abstract

Abstract Gentamicin usage can cause the damage of liver structure and function. The basic mechanism inducing liver damage from gentamicin is lipid peroxidation in cell membrane and the suppresion of antioxidant defence system in liver. Antioxidant in cassava leaf such as vitamin C, carotene, flavonoid, dan mineral can protect liver from drug toxicity effect. This research aimed to determine hepatoprotective effect of cassava leaf through microscopic observation of liver histopathology slide of mice induced by gentamicin. The research design was post test only control group design. Mice were divided into five groups, normal group, positive control (gentamicin 80 mg/kg b.w.); P1, P2, and P3 (gentamicin 80 mg/kg b.w. and cassava leaf extract 150 mg/kg b.w., 300 mg/kg b.w., 450 mg/kg b.w. respectively, for 14 days). The average score of liver cell damage was determined by microscopic observation of 200 liver cells undergoing parenchymal degeneration, hidrophic degeneration, and necrosis. One Way Anova analysis showed significant difference among the groups (p<0,05) and Post Hoc Tukey HSD test showed that cassava leaf extract at the dose level of 450 mg/kg b.w. resulted significant liver cell characteristic improvement in liver histophatology slide (p<0,05) compared to positive control group. It could be concluded that cassava leaf extract had protective effect on gentamicin-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Keywords: cassava leaf extract, hepatotoxicity, gentamicin, liver histopathology

Abstract

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener in foods and beverages. Continuous use of aspartame will result in oxidative stress in the liver. So we need antioxidants from outside the body such as periwinkle leaves. This study aims to determine the effect of periwinkle leaves (Catharanthus roseus L) on aspartame-induced liver histology. This study used 24 male mice divided into 4 groups, namely negative control (K-) without treatment; Positive control (K +) treatment of aspartame; D1: treatment of aspartame and periwinkle extract doses of 0.42 mg/kg. D2: aspartame and periwinkle  extract doses of 0.84 mg/kgbb. Administration of aspartame dose of 0.2 mg /kgbb by intraperitoneal  for 14 days followed by gavage administration of periwinkle leaf extract for 12 days. The liver was taken on the 27th day by surgery, then made slide histology with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The results show that the administration of Catharanthus roseus leaf extract at a dose of 0.84 mg/kgbw in aspartame-induced mice was effective in reducing hepatocyte damage, namely hydrophilic degeneration and necrosis.

Abstract

Malaria is a major infectious disease worldwide, and vaccination is essential for disease control. The Plasmodium falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein-1 (PfEMP1) is a potential malaria vaccine candidate due to its involvement in pathogenesis. Injection of DBL2β-PfEMP1 recombinant protein in animal models induces IgG and CD4+ production and inhibits binding with host endothelial receptors. This study aimed to analyze the spleen immune response by measuring the white pulp diameter. The experimental study used Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) that were divided into four groups, a control group and three treatment groups, which were injected with 100, 150, and 200 μg of DBL2β-PfEMP1 protein. Injection was done thrice with three-week intervals (days 0, 21, and 42). On day 56, rats were euthanized, and spleens were prepared for histology examination. The white pulp diameter increased along with increasing the dose of protein. The ANOVA test showed a significant difference between groups (p=0.001). The posthoc Bonferroni test showed a significant difference between the control and the 150 and 200 μg groups and the 100 μg and 200 μg groups. In conclusion, the DBL2β-PfEMP1 recombinant protein injection increased the spleen white pulp diameter in Wistar rats, and the 200 μg dose resulted in the highest increase.

Abstract

Currently, the political transaction through trade-off anak adat (customary child) status is wider applied in Papua local election. Benefiting from the direct elections, the elites competed for political power in the regions by mobilizing ethno-religious sentiments and utilizing money-politics. The voters, in return, behave as clients as they seek to gain material benefits from their preferred candidates in exchange for political loyalty. This condition caused the high-cost politics during the local election. Based on this problem, this paper attempts to analyze the hijacking of adat (customs) through trade-off anak adat status as a form of political transaction which impacted to high-cost politics. This study cultivates the theory of political transactions to analyze the political transaction in Papua local election especially in the gubernatorial election 2018 and election of DPRD (Regional Representative Council)’s member in 2019. This form of political transaction has caused the high-cost of local election in Papua, which is not only in the form of money, but also carried the social cultural high-cost impact. Of course, vote buying will make the candidates have to spend a lot of money. The trade-off of anak adat status from other than Papuan through buying and selling mechanism rather than using achievement and acknowledgement from the adat community would harm the Papuans. Moreover, this practice has brought detrimental destruction to the socio-cultural values of Papuan adat community. This study is qualitative research that use political approach to observe the local election processes in Papua. We used the criteria of credibility and confirmability to validate the data in our qualitative research.
