Abstract

This paper presents the analysis of teaching of Math that took place in the classroom to identify the characteristics of didactical contracts that occur as part of a didactical situation. The design experiment was conducted on 31 seventh grade students and a mathematics teacher on negative integer operations lessons. The researchers analyzed the ongoing learning, how the didactical situation stages evolve in the teacher-student interaction that allows the formation of new knowledge or concepts in the student and how the teacher organizes the responsibility for achieving the learning objectives. The Analysis showed that students, at an early stage, can perform negative integers operations by utilizing the basic concepts they get in primary school. This concept can bridge into a new knowledge that identifies the properties of integer count operations and builds power of mind on problem-solving.

Abstract

Effective learning planning requires information on the obstacles to learning a given concept that students experience to create a learning flow that matches the students’ characters, including in the learning of the concepts of relations and functions. The research aims to determine the learning obstacles (LOs) that students experience in learning the concepts of relations and functions as per the criteria of the theory of didactic situations (TDS). Employing the case study method, this qualitative research was conducted with subjects that included 19 prospective teacher students who had taken a diagnostic test and participated in in-depth interviews. An analysis was conducted based on three TDS criteria, namely action, formulation, and validation. The results revealed two types of LOs that students experienced in learning the concepts of relations and functions: 1) ontogenic obstacles and 2) epistemological obstacles. The first type of obstacles included 1a) the inability to properly understand the definition of the intersection of two relations, referred to as conceptual ontogenic obstacle, and 1b) the inability to relate the concept of relations in drawing a Hasse diagram, referred to as instrumental ontogenic obstacle. Meanwhile, the second type included 2a) the difficulty in expressing relations in the forms of mapping diagrams and graphs, 2b) the difficulty in determining the range of a function, 2c) the difficulty in identifying relations which are also functions, 2d) the inability to represent relations in the forms of mapping diagrams, and 2e) the inability to write a function as a set of ordered pairs. It is recommended that these LO findings be taken into consideration in designing learning tools.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify learning obstacles and develop a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) for teaching the concept of similarity in Grade VII. The research is part of Didactical Design Research at the prospective analysis stage. Data were collected through textbook review, analysis of instructional materials, curriculum documents, diagnostic tests, and interviews with teachers and students. Analysis techniques include qualitative analysis, descriptive statistics, and data triangulation. Findings reveal types of learning obstacles: (1) ontogenetic, low conceptual readiness; (2) epistemological, inability to relate ratios to similarity conditions, compare corresponding sides, and make sketches; and (3) didactic, materials that lack explicit explanation of similarity conditions, offer few contextual activities, and focus on procedures. Based on these findings, the HLT includes three goals: informal recognition of similarity, identifying similar triangles based on conditions, and solving contextual problems through exploratory activities, group discussion, and real-life contexts. The study implies that systematic identification of learning obstacles is essential for designing more adaptive and meaningful instructional interventions.

Abstract

This research was motivated by learning obstacles experienced by students. These learning obstacles were obtained from the results of preliminary studies on statistics material. Thus, the aim of this research is to develop a didactical design for statistical material so that it can overcome the learning obstacles experienced by students. This research is qualitative research using the Didactical Design Research (DDR) method through three stages, namely a) Prospective Analysis, b) Metapedadidactic Analysis, and c) Retrospective Analysis. Data collection in this research is interviews, tests, documentation, photos. The results of this research show that there are several LOs experienced by students in statistics material, namely that there are still some students who cannot read data and there are still some who cannot make bar charts. HLT is structured based on the LO experienced by students, namely: 1) understanding the meaning of data, 2) understanding how to read data and interpreting data in the form of bar charts, 3) understanding how to present or make bar charts. The didactic design was implemented and obtained from the results of the final identification test, there was a decrease in LO compared to the initial diagnostic test. Based on these findings, a revision of the hypothetical didactic design was carried out and a revised didactic design was obtained.
