Abstract

This study aims to determine: whether the critical thinking ability of mathematics students taught using powtoon learning media is better than the critical thinking ability of mathematics students taught using power point learning media. The population in this study were all seventh grade students of SMP IT Wihdatul Ummah Kolaka. Sampling was determined by saturated sampling technique, so that class VIIIA was obtained as experimental class I and class VIIIB as experimental class II. The data on students' mathematical critical thinking skills were collected using a test instrument given during the posttest. The results showed that the critical thinking ability of mathematics of students taught using power point learning media consisting of 13 students showed an average value (mean) of 72.308. While the critical thinking ability of mathematics students taught using powtoon learning media consisting of 16 students showed an average value (mean) of 76.801. This shows that the average critical thinking ability of students in teaching social arithmetic material for Experiment II class is slightly higher than the average critical thinking ability of students in Experiment I class. Furthermore, the results of hypothesis testing using the t-test have obtained the value of t (-0.892) < ttabel (1.703), indicating that H0 is accepted, inferentially this means that the critical thinking ability of mathematics students taught using powtoon learning media is not better than the critical thinking ability of mathematics students taught using power point learning media.

Abstract

This study examines Laut Bercerita (2017) by Leila S. Chudori through the lens of posthuman hybridity, focusing on the intertwined roles of digital technology, ecological environment, and spectral agency in shaping identity. Amidst the global digital era and ecological crisis, traditional anthropocentric views of human identity are challenged by fluid, relational, and distributed constructions involving human and non-human actors. Utilizing interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks including Braidotti’s posthumanism, Hayles’ digital cognition, Alaimo’s material ecocriticism, and Derrida’s hauntology, this study employs qualitative textual analysis to reveal how the novel’s characters negotiate identity across three interconnected dimensions: digital archives as extensions of memory and consciousness; the sea as an active ecological agent influencing subjectivity; and spectral presences of political trauma that haunt and shape contemporary identities. The findings demonstrate that Laut Bercerita offers a critical intervention in Indonesian post-Reformasi literature by portraying identity as hybrid and emergent from dynamic relations between technology, environment, and history. This article contributes to contemporary Indonesian literary studies by foregrounding posthuman perspectives that move beyond anthropocentrism and emphasize inclusivity in understanding subjectivity in the digital-ecological age.

Abstract

Technology in learning is developing very rapidly regarding material delivery and assessment or evaluation. An educator needs to possess the ability to compose good assessments to measure the success of students' understanding of the material. With the development of technology, educators should be able to transform conventional assessments into digital assessments to support the digitalization process in education. The main objective of this research is to create an assessment tool for mathematics courses using the Ispring Quiz Maker and then integrate it into Chamilo. The combination of quiz maker software and LMS will add insight to readers, especially teachers and lecturers, in making online mathematics assessments. A modified development method from ADDIE, 4D, and Plomp was used to achieve this goal. The several stages passed resulted in an assessment prototype for the Differential Calculus course. The resulting assessment instrument has gone through the item and material validation processes to obtain a good instrument that is suitable for use. This instrument can later be used for the Final Semester and Midterm examinations for Differential Calculus courses.

Abstract

Therapeutic communication in English has become increasingly important in midwifery education, considering global health standards and the need for effective patient interaction across languages. Despite this, students often face barriers that hinder their ability to communicate therapeutically in English. This study investigates the internal and external barriers experienced by second-semester midwifery students in practicing therapeutic communication in English, and explores the coping strategies they employ. A qualitative descriptive design was applied with 26 second-semester midwifery students selected purposively. Data were collected through adapted questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was used to identify categories of barriers and coping strategies. The findings revealed that internal barriers included shyness, lack of confidence, low motivation, and fear of mistakes, with shyness being the most dominant. External barriers consisted of embarrassment, limited vocabulary, lack of preparation, grammatical errors, and peer judgment, with embarrassment identified as the most critical. Coping strategies involved preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, concentration, and peer support, with preparation and relaxation as the most effective. Practicing therapeutic communication in English presents multidimensional challenges for students, combining psychological, social, and linguistic difficulties. Integrating English for Specific Purposes (ESP) modules, simulation, flipped classrooms, and peer-based learning into midwifery curricula can enhance students’ confidence, communication skills, and readiness for international clinical practice.

Abstract

This research is to describe the expressive actions and how expressive speech acts describe the psychology of the protagonist, and why expressive actions have a negative impact on the protagonist's psychology in Toni Morrison's Blue Eyes novel. A terrible discrimination in the form of racism and conventional beauty standards against African-American women in America during the 1940s, experienced by the main character Pecola, had a negative impact on her psychology due to being raped by her father and the pressure from her mother's rejection, which further worsened her mental condition, giving her deep trauma so that she lived in her dreams of having blue eyes until she died. The research method used is descriptive qualitative according to W. Webster, which involves describing and categorizing words, phrases, and general ideas in qualitative data. The main data source is a novel supported by books, journals, and electronic news. Data was collected through observation, grouping, and information gathering using pragmatic validity, especially Searle's theory in Yule, and Sigmund Freud's theory with a philosophical approach to help readers understand speech acts as a whole. The significant of this study is to determine expressive acts and how expressive speech acts depict the protagonist's psychology, and why expressive acts have a negative impact on the protagonist's psychology in Toni Morrison's novel Blue Eyes. In this context, the main character uses expressive speech acts in her utterances, which means experiencing psychological states that contain meanings of pleasure, pain, like, dislike, joy, sadness, and apology. The results of this study indicate that expressive speech acts by Pecola are dominated by sadness, dislike, and dreams.

Abstract

This study analyzes the news narrative “Aceh Tak Masuk Daerah Rawan Pilkada Serentak, Lima Provinsi Memiliki Potensi Tinggi” using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model to explore Aceh’s portrayal as a role model of democratic success. The research aims to uncover how this narrative influences perceptions of Aceh’s stability among local and national audiences, particularly in contrast to its historical association with conflict. This study adopts a qualitative approach, employing Van Dijk’s CDA framework, which consists of three dimensions: textual analysis, social cognition, and sociopolitical context. The data were collected through a textual analysis of media discourse and audience surveys involving 47 respondents (37 from Aceh and 10 from outside Aceh). The textual analysis focuses on the structural composition of the news, while the audience survey examines how different groups perceive the narrative. The results indicate that 72.73% of local respondents express pride in Aceh’s depiction as a safe and stable region, yet 43.24% remain neutral about its relevance to current realities. Among national respondents, 100% perceive the narrative positively, with 50% strongly agreeing that Aceh serves as a model for democratic management. These findings demonstrate that media discourse effectively challenges stereotypes and promotes a positive image of Aceh, particularly to national audiences. However, local acceptance requires narratives grounded in authentic experiences. This study contributes to discourse analysis by showing how positive discourse can transform public perception, highlighting its potential to promote post-conflict regions as examples of democratic success.
