Abstract

Reading comprehension, particularly in analyzing narrative texts, remains a challenge for many elementary school students because they use limited structured and engaging instructional media. Conventional teaching practices often fail to guide students in systematically identifying narrative elements such as characters, settings, plots, and main ideas. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of thematic literacy Student Worksheets (LKPD) as instructional media in improving elementary students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts. This research employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method following PRISMA guidelines. Relevant articles were collected from Google Scholar, Scopus, and ERIC, focusing on publications between 2020 and 2025. The selected studies were screened using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, followed by data extraction and qualitative synthesis to identify patterns of findings across studies. The review results indicate that thematic literacy LKPD effectively supports reading comprehension by providing structured tasks, guided questions, and contextual learning activities. These features help students systematically analyze narrative elements and encourage active participation, collaborative discussion, and critical thinking. The findings also show that LKPD use contributes to more meaningful and interactive literacy learning experiences in elementary classrooms. In conclusion, thematic literacy LKPD serves as an effective instructional medium for enhancing elementary students’ narrative reading comprehension when implemented with appropriate instructional design.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ responses to the implementation of multimodality instructions in teaching reading using multimodal texts and their impact on students’ development of semiotic awareness. This study employed a two-cycle classroom action research design, each of which consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants involved in this study were 42 third-semester students majoring in English Education enrolling in a reading class. The data were collected using observation, a questionnaire, and interviews. The observation and interview data, as well as the theme emerging from the questionnaire data, were analyzed using an interactive model of analysis consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The study found that the students had a positive response toward the lecturer’s multimodality instructions in teaching reading using multimodal texts. The four strategies used in employing multimodality instructions in teaching reading using multimodal texts, namely assessing students’ knowledge of semiotics, helping students use their knowledge of semiotics to build mental pictures, guiding students to use background experience in using linguistic knowledge to make predictions, and guiding students to confirm predictions enabled students to construct mental pictures, influence semiotic knowledge, and utilize background experience to facilitate reading comprehension. These strategies were also found to help develop students’ semiotic awareness, which included visual, linguistic, and multimodal awareness. The findings stress the importance of multimodality instructions in reading pedagogy, particularly to nurture semiotic awareness and enhance reading comprehension. This implies that multimodality instructions using multimodal texts can be beneficial for promoting better literacy skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the lecturers and students perception of flipbooks and e-learning in enhancing English learning for teacher education students, the influence of technology integration on student-centered pedagogy for teacher education students, and the use of flipbooks and e-learning to improve English skills for teacher education students. Thirty students and nine lecturers from elementary school teacher education programs at three Indonesian universities participated in this study, which used the qualitative descriptive technique. They attend Universitas Halu Oleo Kendari in Southeast Sulawesi, Universitas Borneo Tarakan in North Kalimantan, and Universitas Negeri Jakarta in Jakarta. Data collection was conducted through documents, observations, interviews, and questionnaires. This study found that both lecturers and students positively perceive flipbooks and e-learning as tools for enhancing English learning in elementary school teacher education. Flipbooks effectively present complex concepts, while e-learning provides accessible, diverse resources that develop digital skills. Technology integration significantly benefits student-centered pedagogy but also poses challenges such as technical issues and increased workloads. The study highlighted the need for interventions to improve students listening and speaking skills, suggesting that combining effective teaching methods and digital media can enhance English language proficiency and the overall learning experience. It is suggested that more efforts should be directed toward promoting technology pedagogy content knowledge that fosters students higher-order thinking skills in English teaching materials for elementary school teacher education programs in higher education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ English speaking skills through the implementation of the Community Language Learning (CLL) method in Class IV-B of SDN Kelapa Dua Wetan 02. Preliminary observations revealed that English instruction was still teacher-centered, resulting in low speaking performance among students. They tended to be passive, lacked confidence, and were reluctant to speak English due to fear of making mistakes. Consequently, their ability to pronounce vocabulary, construct simple sentences, and communicate orally had not developed optimally. This classroom action research employed four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The study was conducted in two cycles, with three meetings in each cycle. The findings indicated a significant improvement in students’ speaking skills from Cycle I to Cycle II. In Cycle I, teacher activity reached 80% and student activity reached 85%, while 75% of students (24 out of 32) achieved the minimum mastery criterion of 70, which did not meet the predetermined success indicator of 80%. Therefore, improvements were made and the research was continued to Cycle II. In Cycle II, teacher activity increased to 88.9% and student activity reached 88%, while speaking skill mastery improved to 87.5% (28 out of 32 students), exceeding the success indicator. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Community Language Learning method effectively improved the English speaking skills of Class IV-B students at SDN Kelapa Dua Wetan 02.
