Abstract

Stunting is a serious health problem in Indonesia, which can affect the growth and development of children. The Family Assistance Team (FATS) has an important role in stunting prevention through education and nutrition monitoring. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of FATS in preventing stunting, as well as identify the challenges faced in the implementation of their duties. The research method used is a descriptive design with a quantitative approach, involving 35 FATSs working in 13 stunting locus villages in Sigi Regency. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire that measured the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the FATS, and the data was statistically analyzed to get an overview of the characteristics of the respondents and the effectiveness of the FATS. The results show that FATS has a good understanding of stunting, but there is a need for improvement in terms of resource availability and training frequency. Most FATSs feel effective in their roles and are satisfied with the support provided by their respective organizations. Recommendations for continuous training and adequate logistical support were identified as key to improving the effectiveness of FATS in stunting prevention, providing important insights for the development of more effective stunting prevention programs at the village level.

Abstract

Introduction: Several studies on tuberculosis (TB) using spatial and time clustering analyses have been conducted in Indonesia, however none have specifically focused on regions characterized by diverse topography. This study aimed to identify geospatial clusters of TB cases in West Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, an area known for its topographic variability. Methods: An ecological study design was employed. TB case data, including bacteriologically confirmed and clinically diagnosed cases, were obtained from the Tuberculosis Information System (Sistem Informasi Tuberkulosis, SITB) of the West Sulawesi Provincial Health Office, covering the period from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2023. Spatial visualization was performed using QGIS version 3.40.0. Cluster detection and spatial pattern analysis were conducted using SaTScan version 10.2.5. Results: TB cases in West Sulawesi formed clusters. A total of 17 clusters were identified—4 primary (most likely) clusters and 13 secondary clusters. In 2020, the primary cluster was located in Bambang Village, Bambang Subdistrict. In 2021, the primary cluster was in Lambanan Village, Mamasa Subdistrict. In 2022, the primary cluster was in Ulumambi Barat Village, Bambang Subdistrict, and in 2023, the primary cluster was again in Lambanan Village, Mamasa Subdistrict. Conclusion: This study found that the most likely TB clusters from 2020 to 2023 were consistently located in the eastern part of West Sulawesi Province, specifically in Mamasa Regency, an area characterized by mountainous terrain. This suggests that various environmental, social, and economic factors unique to mountain communities may influence TB transmission dynamics. The findings highlight the need for geographically tailored intervention strategies, including mobile TB services, community-based education, enhanced surveillance systems, the establishment of local TB support networks, and improved healthcare infrastructure adapted to mountainous areas. Future research should consider integrating genotypic, molecular, and geospatial approaches to advance global TB control efforts.

Abstract

This study evaluates anemia prevention and control measures among adolescent girls in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, where anemia remains a pressing public health issue. Conducted from March to June 2024 in junior and senior high schools in Donggala and Poso, the cross-sectional study surveyed 384 girls using a structured questionnaire. Ethical approval was granted, and informed consent was obtained from participants. The study revealed a prevalence of anemia at 54.71%, with 79.43% of affected girls reporting iron supplement intake. Significant factors associated with anemia included daily consumption of fortified wheat flour (p = 0.010, PR 1.75), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) (p = 0.011, PR 1.74), and negative attitudes toward anemia prevention (p = 0.043, PR 1.54). Despite the high percentage of girls taking iron supplements, anemia remains prevalent, indicating gaps in current prevention efforts. The findings highlight the need for enhanced food fortification, better nutritional monitoring, and educational initiatives to shift attitudes and behaviors. Future research should investigate the long-term effectiveness of these interventions to improve public health outcomes.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a common nutritional problem encountered among adolescents. Approximately 30% of the world's population, especially in developing countries, suffers from anemia. Adolescent girls are prone to iron deficiency anemia because they experience menstruation periodically, requiring additional iron to compensate for the blood loss during menstruation. Iron is needed for the production of hemoglobin in the body. The status of anemia can be determined through changes in hemoglobin levels. One effort to prevent anemia is by consuming Iron Supplement Tablets (IST). The purpose of this activity is to assess the level of knowledge among adolescent girls regarding anemia as an effort to prevent stunting. This activity involves not only lectures and question-and-answer sessions but also health education utilizing attractive promotional media such as posters related to anemia. The results of health education show that there is an increase in the level of knowledge among adolescent girls regarding anemia as an effort to prevent stunting before and after health education, from 66% to 100%. One tangible form of increased knowledge among adolescent girls is the routine consumption of iron supplement tablets (IST), one tablet per day during menstruation and one tablet per week when not menstruating.
