Abstract

The study aims to analyze the prevalence and determinants of stunting in children under two years of age in Tojo Una-Una District, Indonesia as focus location of stunting. The method is Cross-sectional study design, the sample of 300 children aged 0-23 months, stratified random sampling technique. Data collection in June-July 2022. Stunting data was obtained by measuring body length using the length measuring board. The WHO-Antro 2005 software was used to determine the Z-Score height per age. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyzes used SPSS version 22.00. The Results of this research show that 33.7% of children under the age of two are stunted. Stunting in children under the age of two is associated with child age, birth weight, and food insecurity. In addition to a history of low birth weight (AOR=2.7, 95% CI: 1.2-5.7) and experiencing food insecurity (AOR=1.9, 95% CI: 1.1-3.5), children aged 12-23 months (AOR=3.5, 95% CI: 1.7-7.2) have a higher tendency to experience stunting than those who are not. The Conclusion is the prevalence of stunting which is more than 20 percent is a priority health problem that must be resolved by 2024. Interventions to reduce stunting by reducing the incidence of low birth weight, reducing food insecurity, managing birth spacing > 3 years, number of children less than 3, and breastfeeding.

The aim of this research is to analyze the risk factors for stunting in toddlers in Donggala District. This study employed an analytical approach with a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted in Donggala District, with the target population being children aged 6-23 months. A sample of 397 toddlers was obtained through cluster simple random sampling. The respondents were mothers of the toddlers. Data collection took place in August 2023. The independent variables included in the study were the characteristics of mothers and households, child characteristics, disease history, healthcare access, and dietary intake. The dependent variable was stunting status. Stunting data were obtained by measuring the child's length using Length Board Measuring (LMB) and determining age by reading the birth certificate or the child's KIA book. Other data were collected through the Kobocollect questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 22.00, with Z-Score values based on WHO-Antro 2005 standards. Multivariate analysis employed backward logistic regression. The research results indicated that significant factors contributing to the risk of stunting in toddlers in Donggala District included the child's gender, birth length, low birth weight, and consumption of unhealthy snacks. Birth length (AOR=1.8, 95% CI: 1.1-3.1), child gender (AOR=1.7, 95% CI: 1.0-2.7), low birth weight (AOR=2.3, 95% CI: 1.0-5.2), and unhealthy snack consumption (e.g., chips, cheese balls) (AOR=2.0, 95% CI: 1.0-3.8) were all significant factors. Policies addressing aspects such as nutrition, maternal and child healthcare services, supervision of unhealthy snacks, and monitoring and evaluation would help reduce the risk of stunting and improve the quality of life for children in Donggala District

Abstract

Background: Central Sulawesi falls within the Wallacea region, making it home to various endemic flora and fauna. One distinctive plant in Central Sulawesi is the Moringa tree. The Moringa tree, especially its leaves, was often used as a culinary ingredient known as sayurkelor in the traditional cuisine of the Kaili ethnic group in Central Sulawesi Province. Objective: This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of moringa leaf extract in increasing hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte count. Method: Twenty-four male Wistar rats strain (Rattusnorvegicus) 9−10 weeks old and 200−250 grams were divided into four groups (n=6), normal as a no treatment, negative control, ethanol extract, and positive control during the 15thday. Blood samples on the 15thday were administered to determine blood count. Result: The resultsof this study showed differences in hemoglobin and erythrocyte levels in the four experimental groups. The significant difference in average hemoglobin levels between Group 2 and Group 3 with a P-value <0.05 (P value 0.00). The difference between Group 2 and Group 4 is significant with a P-value <0.05 (P value 0.00), and the difference between Group 3 and Group 4 is significant with a P-value <0.05 (P value 0.03). the significant difference in the average erythrocyte counts between Group 2 and Group 3 with a P-value <0.05 (P value 0.00). The difference between Group 2 and Group 4 is not significant with a P-value >0.05 (P value 0.07). The difference between Group 3 and Group 4 has a P-value >0.05 (P value 0.63). Conclusion: The research results indicate that pregnant Wistar rats experienced hemodilution characterized by a decrease in hemoglobin and erythrocyte levels during pregnancy. However, after being given ethanol extract from moringa leaves, there was an increase in hemoglobin and erythrocyte levels. Keywords: Extract; ethanol; moringa; oleifera; hemoglobin
