Abstract

This study explores the psycholinguistic dimensions of lexical choice and emotional expression in Bill Gates’ 2007 Harvard Commencement Speech. Drawing on a qualitative descriptive methodology and discourse analysis of the speech transcript, this research investigates how Gates strategically employs emotionally charged vocabulary, humor, metaphors, and narrative structures to evoke specific emotional responses, foster audience engagement, and advocate for social change. The findings reveal that Gates utilizes high-emotion lexical items such as regret, inequity, and disparity to highlight global injustices while employing self-deprecating humor to reduce psychological distance and build rapport with the audience. Metaphorical constructs further enhance cognitive processing and emotional resonance by simplifying complex societal issues. This paper extends its analysis to emphasize the educational implications of Gates’ linguistic strategies, particularly in relation to public speaking pedagogy, emotional intelligence in communication, and the role of language in shaping critical thinking and social awareness. The study contributes to the understanding of psycholinguistic dynamics in influential public discourse and underscores the importance of integrating affective and cognitive dimensions in language education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of entrepreneurship education on the entrepreneurial skills of vocational high school students, taking into account the role of digital literacy and entrepreneurship literacy as mediating variables. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method through hypothesis testing. The research sample involved 223 12th grade vocational high school students in Blitar Regency. Data analysis was conducted using the Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) method. The results of this study indicate that entrepreneurship education does not have a significant or negative effect on entrepreneurial skills. This occurs because the entrepreneurship education process applied to students is more theoretical, lacks practical application, and the material is not aligned with students' needs in the workplace. Meanwhile, entrepreneurship education can have a significant and positive impact on digital literacy and entrepreneurship literacy. These results indicate that entrepreneurship education can enhance students' skills in using digital technology. Entrepreneurship education serves as the foundation for digital knowledge and entrepreneurial understanding, enabling students to create businesses in the future. The implications of this study are highly useful for developing policies, business practices, and approaches that enhance the entrepreneurial skills of vocational high school students in Blitar Regency

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of lexical cohesion in spoken discourse, particularly within the digital sports media context of CBS Sports Golazo’s UCL Today Moments playlist. Lexical cohesion, as defined by Cutting (2005), encompasses devices such as repetition, synonymy, superordinate terms, and general words, which contribute to the coherence and clarity of spoken interaction. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzed five episodes from the playlist, totaling approximately 45 minutes of conversational data. The findings reveal that repetition is the most frequently used cohesion device (37%), followed by general words (25.9%), synonyms (24.1%), and superordinate terms (13%). These patterns highlight how speakers naturally employ lexical cohesion to emphasize meaning, avoid redundancy, and maintain discourse continuity in informal, spontaneous settings. The study also underscores the functional significance of lexical cohesion in managing the flow and coherence of talk show interactions. By focusing on two-way digital conversations, this research fills a gap in previous studies that primarily addressed one-directional or written discourse, offering new insights into how lexical cohesion operates in real-time, dialogic communication.
