Abstract

Polysemy is a linguistic term that describes when a word or phrase has multiple related meanings. Polysemy is part of the field of semantics, which studies the relationship between meanings in language. This research examined the presence of polysemy in the movie adaptation Little Women (2019) that directed by Greta Gerwig. The research method is descriptive qualitative, with analytical techniques applied to the source material, specifically the movie script. The theoretical framework for analyzing polysemy was based on Apresjan’s concept, which provides a comprehensive understanding of polysemy. The findings of this analysis include 12 data points, each consisting of two dialogues that present similar words but different meanings. The analysis concluded with the assertion that the Little Women (2019) movie exemplifies a multitude of polysemic uses related to semantics.

Abstract

In today's competitive business environment, customer experience has become an increasingly important factor in determining the success of a business. As a result, businesses are constantly looking for ways to improve the experience of their customers through service innovation. Service innovation refers to the development and implementation of new or improved services that better meet the needs and wants of customers. The objective of service innovation is to provide a unique and differentiated customer experience that sets a business apart from its competitors. Although the importance of service innovation in improving customer experience is widely recognized, there is a lack of clarity on how service innovation can be effectively implemented to enhance customer experience. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to fill this gap by synthesizing existing research on service innovation and its impact on customer experience.

Abstract

This study examines the use of positive politeness strategies and the factors that influence the use of positive politeness strategies in the speech of a Muslim football player, Paul Pogba, in The Muslim Money Experts Podcast Episode 3. This study uses the theory of positive politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) as a tool to answer the problem formulation. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach that examines various things with a natural background to try to understand or interpret various phenomena. Based on the findings in this study, we found that 194 data from 15 positive politeness strategies were used by Paul Pogba. There are 29 data of the most dominant of two sub-strategies, the first, intensify interest to the H, because Paul Pogba wants to involve hearers in the topic he is talking about and wants to increase hearers’ interest in a topic, and the second sub-strategy, presuppose/raise/assert common ground, because Paul tries to build cooperation with hearers. The least used sub-strategy is a joke. Keywords: Positive Politeness Strategies, Paul Pogba, Muslim Football Player

Abstract

The role of language in shaping social identity is prominent, especially in the representation of gender in digital narratives. This study investigates language choices in Red Dead Redemption 2 through Deborah Tannen's genderlect theory, which focuses on rapport talk (female language style characterized by relationality and expressivity), and report talk (male language style that emphasizes status, information, and dominance). Using descriptive qualitative methods, this study shows that female characters mostly display rapport talk and report talk is mostly displayed by male characters. However, some characters portray a combination of both, adding to the complexity of gender presentation in digital media. The results show how video games can reinforce or reaffirm linguistic representations of gender stereotypes.

Abstract

This research examines the animated film Turning Red as a narrative that explores cultural identity, generational conflict, and self-discovery within the Chinese-Canadian diaspora. By employing qualitative research and narrative text analysis, the research focuses on how the film portrays the tension between traditional values and modern influences in shaping the protagonist Mei Lee’s identity. The story follows Mei, a 13-year-old Toronto teenager, as she navigates adolescence, family expectations, and her transformation into a red panda, which symbolizes emotional change. The film highlights the clash between Mei and her mother Ming, who adheres strictly to cultural traditions, emphasizing Mei’s desire to forge her own path. Through empathy and communication, Mei and Ming reconcile their differences, highlighting the importance of familial relationships. The red panda serves as a powerful symbol for self-acceptance and the blending of heritage with personal growth. Overall, Turning Red offers valuable insights into cultural representation, identity formation, and the universal theme of family.

Abstract

Economic education, as one of the fields of study in higher education, plays a crucial role in preparing the younger generation to understand and manage economic decisions. Research in this field has been growing rapidly, yet the direction of research needs to be well-mapped to identify future gaps. This study employs bibliometric techniques, including Bradford’s Law, Co-occurrence Network Analysis, and Thematic Mapping. The results reveal that the distribution of publications in this field is highly uneven. Bradford’s Law analysis shows that most publications come from a small number of key journals, while co-occurrence analysis identifies strong connections between various themes in economic education, with "economic education" as a central node linking major topics such as educational models, cognitive challenges, economic literacy, and entrepreneurship. This study indicates that economic education is interdisciplinary, encompassing cognitive, social, and behavioral dimensions. It suggests that more research should focus on integrating economic education theory with practical applications in areas such as entrepreneurship development and economic literacy. Furthermore, further exploration of the impact of evidence-based economic education interventions on student learning outcomes is recommended, along with identifying new opportunities for the development of curricula and economic education models that are more relevant to future needs.

Abstract

This study examines the application of Geoffrey Leech’s politeness principles in the talk show “Culture Shock or Shock Culture, Which One?” to understand how politeness maxims contribute to effective communication. Using a qualitative approach, the dialogue was analyzed based on Leech’s six maxims: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The findings reveal that all maxims are present, with the agreement maxim being the most frequently observed (4 instances), followed by the approbation maxim (3 instances), generosity maxim (2 instances), and tact and modesty maxims (1 instance each). The predominance of the agreement maxim highlights its role in fostering a harmonious conversational environment, avoiding conflict, and encouraging mutual respect. The tact maxim minimizes imposition, while the approbation maxim strengthens rapport by emphasizing praise. Additionally, the modesty maxim promotes humility, and the generosity maxim reflects the speakers’ willingness to prioritize others. These results suggest that politeness maxims are essential in maintaining positive and engaging talk show interactions, with the agreement maxim playing a central role in ensuring smooth and respectful discourse.
