Abstract

Abstract

Molecular geometry is one of the biggest challenges in science education. Since molecular structures exist at a microscopic level, students often struggle to visualize them in three dimensions (3D), making it difficult to understand concepts such as bond angles, molecular shapes, and electron pair interactions. This study explores the role of spatial ability in high school students’ understanding of molecular geometry. Using a quantitative descriptive method, the study examined the spatial ability and molecular science comprehension of 58 high school students. Data were collected using standardized tests, including the Mental Rotation Test (MRT), shape assembly, and 3D visualization for spatial ability, along with a molecular science comprehension test focusing on VSEPR theory. The results obtain that students' spatial ability is significantly low, with average scores falling far below expected standard. The results suggest the need for more effective teaching strategies that incorporate 3D visualization tools to enhance students’ ability. Future research should focus on interactive learning approaches, such as virtual simulations to help students better visualize molecular structures and improve their understanding of science concepts.

Abstract

The development of 21st-century education in Indonesia necessitates equipping students with essential competencies such as problem-solving skills (PSS), particularly in chemistry learning, where real-world relevance is crucial. This study explores the integration of the Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) approach into Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as a strategy to enhance students' PSS in chemistry. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), this research analyzed 127 articles from five databases (SCOPUS, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, Taylor & Francis, and ERIC) published between 2020 and 2024. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria based on relevance to PBL, SETS, PSS, and secondary chemistry education, 14 high-quality articles were selected for in-depth analysis. The review revealed that integrating SETS into PBL positively impacts students' ability to analyze, reason, and apply chemical concepts in solving contextual problems. However, challenges such as teacher readiness, curriculum constraints, and limited assessment tools were also identified. This study contributes to the literature by mapping trends and identifying best practices for implementing PBL-SETS in chemistry education. Despite its comprehensive scope, the review is limited by potential publication bias and the exclusion of non-English studies. These findings suggest the need for more empirical studies and professional development programs to support teachers in adopting PBL-SETS effectively.

Abstract

Cipanas Village is classified as densely populated without landfills or institutions in charge of processing waste. This village accumulates mostly household organic waste in the form of vegetables, fruit, or other organic waste. To overcome the waste problem in this village, the community service team conducted socialization and demonstrations in making ecoenzymes to overcome organic waste problems. The ecoenzyme solution has many benefits, such as a cleaning solution, plant fertilizer, and many more. This community service activity consists of two stages: socialization and demonstration. This community service activity was very well received by the Cipanas Village community, as seen by the enthusiasm and many questions asked by the participants about the socialization and demonstration of making ecoenzymes. Community service activities like this are hoped to be carried out sustainably, encouraging people to be creative and innovative in creating a clean and waste-free environment while making products of ecoenzymes that are very beneficial for people's lives.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the relationship between English language skills and the students' learning outcomes in chemistry learning that uses English as the medium of instruction (EMI). This qualitative descriptive study was conducted on 40 high school students. Data is collected and analyzed in the form of the test result of the language skills and learning outcomes. The results for students' language skills: 75 % of students are at level A2 (primary user), 15 % are at level B1 (intermediate), 5 % are at level B2 (upper-intermediate), and 5 % are at level C1 (advance/proficient user). The students' chemistry learning results are averagely low, i.e., 70 % of students gained a score under 75 as the minimum criteria of standard learning,  only 30 % of students reached the score above the KKM (Criteria of Minimum Competency). The conclusion of this research is that there is a relationship between language skills and chemistry learning outcomes. Learning chemistry in English has not given good results for students' learning outcomes. Therefore, the demands of learning in English need to be supported by good language skills to understand the learning content.

Abstract

The industrial revolution in the 21st century demands the creation of a generation that is responsive to change and has the competencies of Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration (4C). The contextual learning process based on ethnochemistry is expected to increase students' motivation and interest in learning chemistry. Chemistry subjects that are classified as difficult and can be linked to local culture are the colligative properties of solutions. This study aims to analyze chemical literacy through learning with an Ethnochemical approach to the material of colligative properties of solutions. The research method used is quantitative descriptive research. Data collection using a test method, the test method is in the form of multiple-choice chemical literacy questions with a total of 10 validated questions and has a reliability index in the moderate category. The test method aims to determine students' chemical literacy in terms of content, context, and competence. The results of the study showed that the average chemical literacy of students in terms of content aspects was 49.2%; context aspects of 40.4%, and competency aspects of 50.6%. Th e average chemical literacy from these three aspects is categorized as “Not Enough”. The results of the study concluded that chemical literacy in ethnochemistry-based learning is in the “Not Enaough” category. The recommendation from this study is the need for innovation in chemistry learning through integration between ethnochemistry and STEM as well as the development of teaching materials in the form of ethnochemistry-based books that support the learning process.

The kit is designed to enhance the learning process by utilizing simple, safe materials that can be easily applied in school laboratories. This research employs a development approach using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), chosen for its effectiveness in designing, developing, and evaluating the feasibility of the kit.The dependent variables of this research include content feasibility, tool design, and safety levels in the context of educational use. The results show that the developed kit meets high standards of feasibility. Validation by subject matter experts revealed a content feasibility of 91.67%, while media experts rated the design and functionality at 94.50%. Additionally, laboratory safety experts confirmed the kit's safety with a rating of 97.33%.Based on these evaluations, it can be concluded that the developed kit is both valid and suitable for use in high school chemistry education. This kit is expected to improve student engagement and deepen their understanding of inorganic chemistry concepts.
