Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Radiotherapy is a cancer therapy that uses ionizing radiation to damage cancer cells. Ionizing radiation in the head and neck area can disrupt the function and integrity of the oral mucosa and cause oral mucositis. In Bandung, the prevalence and risk factors of oral mucositis in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiotherapy have not been studied. Some textbooks claim that the prevalence of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in HNC patients occurs at almost 100%. Various risk factors associated with oral mucositis have been studied, giving significantly different results. This research analyzes the correlation between risk factors and mucositis oral in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional retrospective study with secondary data from medical records of HNC patients at RSHS from January 2015 until December 2019. A consecutive sampling method was used to collect the data that match the Inclusion criteria, including diagnosis of HNC(ICD-10), receiving radiotherapy from the first cycle until the last cycle; having a complete medical record following variables (location of HNC coding by ICD-10, gender, age, education level, smoking habit, the cycle of radiotherapy, oral treatment, body mass index, and comorbid disease). All data were then analyzed using Spearman correlation. Result: 171 medical records showed 59 patients had oral mucositis after radiotherapy. 26.9% male and 7.6% female, with susceptible age 40-60 years. Analysis of the Spearman correlation, there is a significant relationship between body mass index (BMI) (ρ = 0,001), smoking habits (ρ = 0,001), and radiotherapy cycles (ρ = 0.001). Conclusion: There is a correlation between risk factors of oral mucositis in HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy in RSHS, including body mass index (BMI), smoking habits, and radiotherapy cycles. Keywords: Head and neck cancer; oral mucositis; prevalence; risk factor; retrospective study

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: The PUFA Index and pufa are used to measure the severity of dental and oral conditionwhich are not commonly used due to its novelty, and this index can be used to measure untreated dental caries7 and caries activity. The aims of study are to assess the severity of untreated caries in children’s deciduous and permanent teeth by using the PUFA and pufa index. Methods: An observational study using a cross-sectional study design was conducted among children who lived in Puteran village in Pager Ageung district, Tasikmalaya Regent, West Java, Indonesia. Purposive sampling was used, and the children who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were invited to participate in the study. Severity of caries was assessed using the pufa and PUFA index for deciduous and permanent teeth, respectively. Severity of caries data were analysed using formulas for pufa and PUFA index. Results: A total of 206 children participated in the study. The PUFA assessment showed the severity of caries was high in the deciduous dentition with pufa index of 3.5 with SD 1,9-3,6 However, the PUFA assessment showed a relatively lower severity of caries in permanent teeth, with index PUFA of 0.5 with SD 1,9-3,6. The severity of caries was higher in the maxillary than the mandibular teeth in deciduous teeth. On the other hand, the severity of caries was higher in the mandibular than maxillary teeth in the permanent teeth. Conclusions: Each child aged 6 and 12 years in Puteran village had severe untreated caries in one permanent tooth and severe untreated caries in 3 to 4 of deciduous teeth. The findings of the study will be used to develop caries prevention and oral health promotion programs.KEYWORDS Caries, Severity, Deciduous, Permanent, teeth, PUFA, PUFA index, children

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: The high incidence of dental caries in children is partly due to the lack of parental participation in estabilishing children's tooth-brushing habits. This research aims to see an increase in the variables tested in the EKARINI, an educational model on mothers’ knowledge, attitudes, and children's OHIS. Methods: This study employs an experimental design, collecting pretest and posttest data from mothers and their children following the intervention.  The intervention provided in this study involved the EKARINI educational model, which included a pre-test and post-test in the form of a questionnaire consisting of several questions about maternal knowledge and attitudes toward dental health, and the control group received standard education using media such as leaflets, videos, and phantom models. The sample consisted of two groups: an intervention group with 20 respondents and a control group with 20 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using either the independent t-test or the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The findings revealed a significant difference between the posttest scores of the intervention group and the control group The p-values indicate significant differences for each variable: knowledge (p = 0.006), attitude (p = 0.016), and OHIS (p = 0.010), showing that the EKARINI educational model effectively improved maternal knowledge, attitudes, and children's oral hygiene compared to the control group. Based on the average value, the group that received the educational model had a higher average value than the control group. Conclusion: The EKARINI educational model is in increasing mothers’ knowledge, attitudes, and better OHIS values.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dentists play a significant role in preventing the transmission of 2019-nCoV. Recommended infection control measures during dental practice can block the route of person-to-person transmission. Dentists and their personnel are used to assess the risk of cross-infection. This study aimed to obtain dentists' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of licensed dentists using the convenience sampling technique. The minimum sample size was counted using the formula for a descriptive analysis of one group with the expected proportion of 50% and the confidence level of 95%, and obtained 407 respondents from 31 provinces. Data was collected using a questionnaire distributed via a shortened link. 99.75% of respondents knew personal protective equipment, but only 84.28% knew the proper removal procedure. 99.75% of respondents knew about dental devices that cause aerosols, and all respondents knew about social and physical distancing. Result: Dentists’ attitudes regarding personal protective equipment were that they needed and maintained it during the pandemic. All respondents stated that social and physical distancing was critical and must be maintained while providing health services. Regarding their practices, all respondents did social and physical distancing in their daily lives and during dental procedures. Conclusion: Dentists' knowledge is already good in several ways, but with several matters that still need to be improved, their attitudes and practices are good criteria. Keywords: smart Odontogram; medical record; application; usability testing; user’s experience

Abstract

The high incidence of stunting necessitates accelerated prevention programs, which can be implemented by enhancing stunting literacy as part of women's empowerment initiative to prevent stunting, particularly in the field of oral health. Stunted children are more susceptible to dental caries due to changes in saliva characteristics, such as reduced flow rate and pH. The objective of this empowerment program is to increase women's literacy regarding stunting, specifically related to oral health and nutrition. The method includes a series of community empowerment activities through five educational programs and two training programs aimed at improving literacy in stunting, oral health, and nutrition. This is followed by demonstrations to enhance the skills of women cadres using educational units and training modules, which have been validated by public health experts. The results of the empowerment program indicate a significant increase in knowledge and skills within the community, reaching optimal levels, although the degree of improvement varies and there remains room for further development. The program, which empowers women by increase literacy on stunting and its relation to oral health and nutrition through education and training, can contribute to improving overall oral health literacy.
