Abstract

Tea waste is a low-cost alternative material for making adsorbent to remove methylene blue from synthetic dye wastewater perpetually. Optimization of the adsorbent process utilized Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and a continuously operating system in a fixed bed column. The independent variables in the research are X1 (bed height), X2 (contact time), and X3 (flow rate). The dependent variable is Y1 (removal efficiency) with a matrix design by Box-Behnken. The optimum condition of methylene blue (MB) B removal was found at X1=16 cm, X2=90 min, and X3=4 L/min with an adsorption efficiency of 90.45%. After the activation and adsorption of MB dye, the complete FTIR spectrum shows a distinct peak at 2933.7 cm-1. The results of the EDX analysis performed on tea waste reveal the presence of nitrogen (element N) following the adsorption process. This observation strongly suggests that the tea waste has effectively absorbed MB, as nitrogen is a constituent element found in the molecular structure of MB.

Abstract

Methyl red is an azo compound widely applied in the textile industry as a fabric dye. Methyl red is very difficult to decompose because it is stable to light, temperature, and oxidation. One of the simplest and low-cost methods is adsorption. This study aims to determine the characteristics of bottom ash as an adsorbent and analyze the adsorption process with a fixed-bed column system. The research was conducted by varying the flow rate of 5, 10, and 15 L/min, adsorbent bed height of 4, 8, and 12 cm, and contact time of 60, 120, and 180 minutes. The highest removal efficiency, 93%, was achieved at a contact time of 180 minutes, a flow rate of 5 L/min, and a bed height of 12 cm. The physical properties of the bottom ash adsorbent include a pore volume of 0.0032 cm3/g, a specific surface area of 89.801 m2/g, and an average pore size of 58.523 nm. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 0.850 mg/g. The adsorption process of methyl red onto bottom ash follows the Langmuir isotherm model.

Abstract

Durian peels consist of cellulose, a potential base material for producing sustainable products, particularly degradable plastics. This study examines the impact of polylactic acid (PLA) blends on the degradable plastics derived from durian peel (Durio zibethinus). The mechanical characteristics of the degradable plastics: tensile strength of 2.5671–9.3498 MPa, elongation of 31–96%, and Young’s modulus of 161.32–219.95 MPa. The analysis of the compound revealed the presence of the alcohol monomer (O-H), alkanes and aromatic rings (C-H), carbonyl (C=O), and alkenes (C-O) groups. The potential for soil microbes to decompose these groups is also a consideration, given their hydrophilic nature, which enables them to bind to water. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of the degradable plastic sample revealed the presence of 13 elements: Mg, Ca, Al, P, Fe, Cl, K, Sr, Zn, Sc, Rh, S, and Si. In this study, no harmful metal contaminants (Pb, Hg, or Cd) were identified. Thermal analysis, encompassing a temperature range from 357.67°C to 443.67°C, has been instrumental in identifying the phase transition that marks the onset of extreme weight loss during crystallization. Morphological analysis revealed incomplete dissolution, leading to a nonuniform shape. Solubility is directly proportional to the duration of the stirring process. The degradable plastic with the least swelling is composed of 3.5 g of cellulose and 3 g of PLA, exhibiting a degree of swelling of 4.89%. The degradable plastic is predicted to decompose most rapidly after 56 days with a PLA content of 3 g. This experimental result aligns with the provisions outlined in ASTM D2096, a standard that establishes a maximum time limit of 180 days for the degradation of plastics.
