Abstract

Islam has been an interesting object of study for both Muslims and non-Muslims over a long period of time. A number of methods and approaches have also been introduced. In due time, Islam is now no longer understood solely as a doctrine or a set of belief system. Nor is it interpreted merely as an historical process. Islam is a social system comprising of a complex web of human experience. Islam does not only consist of formal codes that individuals should look at and obey. It also contains some cultural, political and economic values. Islam is a civilization. Given the complex nature of Islam it is no longer possible to deal with it from a single point of view. An inter-disciplinary perspective is required. In the West, social and humanities sciences have long been introduced in the study of religion; studies that put a stronger emphasis on what we currently know as the history of religion, psychology of religion, sociology of religion and so on. This kind of approach in turn, is also applied in the Western studies of the Eastern religions and communities.Islam as a religion is also dealt with in this way in the West. It is treated as part of the oriental culture to the extent that—as Muhammad Abdul Raouf has correctly argued—Islamic studies became identical to the oriental studies. By all means, the West preceded the Muslims in studying Islam from modern perspectives; perspective that puts more emphasis on social, cultural, behavioral, political and economic aspects. Among the Western scholars that approach Islam from this angle is Charles Joseph Adams whose thought this research is interested to explore.

Abstract

A pandemic period demands all network-based community activities. Including educational activities ranging from elementary to tertiary level. This has a huge impact on social relations between communities. As a new student at a university, of course, really need a relationship to support the smoothness of the lecture process. This centralized activity in the network greatly hampers the development of relations between students because they are still strangers to one another. This research examines the development of interpersonal relationships during a pandemic. By using the WhatsApp messenger application, new UINSA Surabaya students can easily improve relationships or interpersonal relationships with fellow new students or lecturers, and other academics. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. Data collection in this study used in-depth interviews and observations with several informants. This research refers to the social penetration theory of Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor. This theory identifies a series of stages in developing a relationship, namely the first stage of orientation, the second stage of exploration-affective, the third stage of affective, the fourth stage is stable, and the last stage is depression. In this study, it was found that in improving interpersonal relations, a concept or a sense of mutual need between communication actors should be created. In addition, an open attitude must also be owned by each individual. And the last is communication ethics that must be owned and applied to create a harmonious relationship.

Abstract

In pursuit of Islamic knowledge, Muslim women migrant worker create religious spaces where they can express their religiosity. In Malaysia, there are communities that specifically support Indonesian migrant workers, especially Muslims, including female migrant workers. One of the functions of the community is as a means of da’wah to Indonesian migrant workers. The purpose of this study was to explore the communication of da'wah in the Muslim community of women migrant workers in Malaysia. This research is qualitative in nature. The data of this study were analyzed based on Grounded Theory (GT). Data were collected through observation and semi-structured interviews conducted virtually. Then, it is analyzed through different coding stages, namely: open, axial, and selective. The results show that the communication in producing Islamic knowledge in the Muslim community is more informal, less traditional, and more interactive than the way Islamic knowledge is produced in mosques, Islamic organizations, and central IPMI. This community gives women the space to show religious autonomy as well as the production and transmission of Islamic knowledge for influencing the members' behavior. The process of changing behavior that occurs in the form of conformity, social facilitation, and polarization. These three forms of influence take place both in the dimensions of knowledge, belief, ritual, experience and religious commitment.
