Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are essential for enabling students to express mathematical ideas, use representations, and explain reasoning clearly. However, elementary students often experience difficulties in using mathematical symbols, interpreting visual representations, and presenting problem-solving steps systematically. This study examined students’ mathematical communication skills after the implementation of ethnomathematics-based learning using Mbojo cultural contexts. A quasi-experimental method with a one-group posttest-only design was employed. The participants were 15 fourth-grade students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a mathematical communication skills test and analyzed using a one-sample t-test with a benchmark score of 70, based on the Minimum Mastery Criteria. The results showed that students’ mean score was 73.87, which was significantly higher than the benchmark, t(14) = 2.822, p = .015. These findings indicate that ethnomathematics-based learning using Mbojo cultural contexts can support students’ mathematical communication skills. However, due to the absence of a pretest and control group, the findings should be interpreted as evidence of students’ achievement above the benchmark rather than strong causal evidence.

Abstract

This study examines the comparative improvement in junior high school students’ understanding of spatial shape representation through the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Ethnomathematics. The study employed a quasi-experimental Non-Equivalent Control Group Design involving 60 seventh-grade students at a junior high school in Bima Regency, consisting of an experimental class (n=30) and a control class (n=30). The intervention was conducted over four weeks through learning activities integrating local Bima cultural contexts, such as Uma Lengge vernacular architecture, into problem-solving and group discussion activities related to spatial geometry concepts. Pretest results indicated relatively comparable initial abilities between the experimental class (M=59.53) and the control class (M=59.00), while posttest results showed higher achievement in the experimental class (M=81.03) compared to the control class (M=69.97). An independent samples t-test yielded t=4.699 with p<0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. N-Gain analysis showed a moderate improvement in the experimental class (0.557) and a low improvement in the control class (0.272). Furthermore, Cohen’s d effect size analysis produced a value of 1.213, indicating a large practical effect. The findings suggest that integrating ethnomathematics within the PBL framework may support students in connecting cultural representations with mathematical concepts and contribute to the development of culturally contextualized mathematics learning in junior high schools.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan modul matematika berbasis Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) yang mengintegrasikan prinsip NYATA sebagai ciri khas modul, serta menguji validitas, kepraktisan, dan efektivitasnya dalam meningkatkan pemahaman konsep matematis siswa. Penelitian menggunakan metode Research and Development (R&D) dengan model ADDIE yang meliputi tahap analisis, desain, pengembangan, implementasi, dan evaluasi. Teknik pengambilan sampel dalam penelitian ini menggunakan purposive sampling, yaitu teknik penentuan sampel berdasarkan pertimbangan tertentu sesuai dengan kebutuhan penelitian. Sampel penelitian terdiri atas siswa kelas VII SMPN 3 Bolo yang berjumlah 17 orang. Data dikumpulkan melalui lembar validasi ahli, angket respons guru dan siswa, serta tes pretest dan posttest. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan analisis deskriptif, uji N-Gain, dan paired sample t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa modul yang dikembangkan memperoleh tingkat validitas sangat tinggi dengan persentase validasi ahli materi dan ahli bahasa masing-masing sebesar 87,5%. Hasil uji kepraktisan menunjukkan respons guru sebesar 90,63% dan respons siswa sebesar 89,38% dengan kategori sangat praktis. Rata-rata nilai siswa meningkat dari 55,6 pada pretest menjadi 75,3 pada posttest. Uji N-Gain memperoleh nilai 0,31 dengan kategori sedang, sedangkan uji paired sample t-test menunjukkan nilai signifikansi p < 0,001. Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa modul yang dikembangkan valid, praktis, dan efektif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konsep matematis siswa.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian untuk mendeskripsikan hasil implementasi pembelajaran berbasis etnomatematika dalam meningkatkan kemampuan numerasi siswa di SDN Tonggorisa Kabupaten Bima. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis penelitian eksperimen. Desain penelitian menggunakan Quasi Experimental Design dengan rancangan One-Group Pretest–Posttest Design yang dilaksanakan pada dua sekolah (multi-site). Populasi sekaligus sampel sebanyak 63 siswa kelas II sekolah dasar. Data diperoleh melalui tes tertulis bentus esay dan dianalisis menggunakan statistik uji t dengan syarat analisis yaitu terpenuhi normalitas dan homogenitas. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran yang diterapkan efektif dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa di SDN Risa dan SDN Tonggorisa. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan antara nilai pretest dan posttest pada kedua sekolah (Sig. = 0,000 < 0,05). Selain itu, hasil analisis N-Gain menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan hasil belajar berada pada kategori sedang dengan nilai rata-rata sebesar 0,68. Hasil uji perbedaan N-Gain juga menunjukkan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,628 (> 0,05), sehingga tidak terdapat perbedaan peningkatan hasil belajar yang signifikan antara siswa di SDN Risa dan SDN Tonggorisa.
