Abstract

This study suggests using positive politeness strategies, as seen through the speech of BTS Kim Namjoon. It also seeks to identify Asian cultural habits in communication-based on Namjoon's Asian background. This research also uses a descriptive qualitative approach based on the transcript of the YouTube video. Based on this research, it can be seen that Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory is used as the leading theory of the analysis. The supporting theory of this research comes from Samovar et al. (2013), who suggest the habits of Asians when communicating. This research shows that BTS Kim Namjoon often uses positive politeness in the strategies of "exaggeration" and "include both S and H in the activity."  This research consists of suppositive politeness strategies used by BTS’ Kim Namjoon to uphold the social relationship and maintain the social interactions between the individuals.

Abstract

Abstract

One of the turn-taking infractions in discourse is overlapping. It happens when the following speaker interrupts the present speaker while they are still speaking, so denying them their turn. Although overlap is still a common occurrence and many speakers are ignorant of its forms and causes, this does not imply that it is always troublesome because, depending on the circumstances, it can sometimes be unproblematic. As a result, they have been unable to effectively employ overlap between those who and do not interrupt the discourse. Thus, this study's goal is to classify the many types of overlap that are created and examine the reasons of overlap in the debate in the video "Messi VS Ronaldo - Is The Debate Finally Over?" Descriptive qualitative methodology was employed in this study, and documentation was the method of data collection. The primary theories that are employed are Schegloff's (2000) categories of overlap and Wardhaugh's (1985) explanations of overlap. The researcher discovered the kinds of overlap that took place and the underlying causes based on the data analysis of the dispute between the two football players. It is intended that this study would assist individuals in making appropriate use of overlap and avoiding overlap that might interfere with a interview

Abstract

This study investigates how illocutionary acts function as motivational strategies in Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor’s TED Talk My Stroke of Insight. While previous studies have primarily focused on classifying speech acts, limited attention has been given to how illocutionary force contributes to the construction of motivational discourse in public speeches. Addressing this gap, the present research analyzes the intersection between linguistic action and motivational intent. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, 139 purposively selected utterances were examined based on their identifiable illocutionary force and motivational meaning. The analysis integrates Searle’s speech act framework with concepts of motivational communication, including emotional engagement, cognitive reframing, inspirational direction, supportive encouragement, and the strengthening of self-efficacy. The findings reveal that representative acts are the most dominant type, indicating the speaker’s emphasis on conveying information and personal insight. Emotional appeal appears as the most frequent motivational function, reflecting the talk’s strong affective orientation. Common combinations such as Representative + Emotional Appeal and Directive + Encouragement demonstrate how linguistic forms work synergistically with motivational strategies to enhance the persuasive and inspirational power of the message. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how illocutionary acts shape motivational discourse in spoken communication.
