Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this research is to examine Cristiano Ronaldo's illocutionary speech acts and how they affect his personality in the context of football. The study uses a descriptive qualitative methodology to analyze transcripts of ten interviews and podcasts covering Ronaldo's career, from his early days at Manchester United to his most recent appearances. The analysis employs Searle's (1969) classification of illocutionary acts—representatives, directives, commissives, declarative, and expressive—alongside Sperber and Wilson's (1996) Relevance Theory and McCrae's (1999) Five-Factor Personality Model. The results show that Cristiano Ronaldo used 242 illocutionary speech acts, with 104 representative speech acts accounting for 43% of the total. These acts expressed declarative statements about his abilities and self-confidence, followed by 55 expressives (23%), 40 commissives (16%), 36 directives (15%), and 7 declaratives (3%). These patterns reflect key personality traits: high Openness (articulating beliefs candidly), Conscientiousness (goal-oriented commitments), extraversion (emotional engagement with audiences), moderate Agreeableness (collaborative directives), and low Neuroticism (stable emotional expressions). The study concludes that Cristiano Ronaldo's strategic use of speech acts not only shapes his public persona as a disciplined and inspirational figure but also corresponds to the psychological characteristics that support his professional success and cultural influence. This integration of pragmatic and psycholinguistic frameworks provides new insights into how linguistic behaviour reflects and reinforces personality in high-stakes situations. Keywords: Cristiano Ronaldo; interviews; illocutionary acts; personality traits; psycho-pragmatics

Abstract

This study suggests using positive politeness strategies, as seen through the speech of BTS Kim Namjoon. It also seeks to identify Asian cultural habits in communication-based on Namjoon's Asian background. This research also uses a descriptive qualitative approach based on the transcript of the YouTube video. Based on this research, it can be seen that Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory is used as the leading theory of the analysis. The supporting theory of this research comes from Samovar et al. (2013), who suggest the habits of Asians when communicating. This research shows that BTS Kim Namjoon often uses positive politeness in the strategies of "exaggeration" and "include both S and H in the activity."  This research consist spositive politeness strategies used by BTS’ Kim Namjoon to uphold the social relationship and maintain the social interactions between the individuals.

Abstract

This study investigates the development of students' English-speaking skills and self-confidence by implementing a digital multimodal presentation project in an English-speaking class. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 31 students and one English teacher through classroom observations, reflective journals, interviews, and document reviews. The findings indicate that the multimodal approach helped students improve their speaking proficiency by integrating various digital tools, fostering creativity, and reducing anxiety. However, some students faced challenges in terms of technical difficulties and limited English vocabulary. Despite these obstacles, the digital multimodal project significantly contributed to building students' self-confidence in speaking English. This method is recommended for further use to enhance students' engagement and communication skills in the language-learning process.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the guiding question technique in enhancing students’ Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) at a senior high school in Cianjur. It employed a quantitative approach with an experimental design, using pre- and post-tests to assess HOTS development. The findings revealed that in the control class, the mean HOTS score before treatment was 61.88, which increased to 74.00 after applying the conventional method. The significance value for the HOTS assessment variable in this group was 0.840. Meanwhile, in the experimental class, the mean HOTS score before treatment was 61.38, rising to 88.62 after implementing the guiding question technique. The post-test HOTS assessment in this group showed a significance value of 0.000. The t-test results confirmed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, indicating that students in the experimental class achieved a higher improvement in HOTS compared to those in the control class. These results establish that the guiding question technique is an effective method for enhancing students' higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

This research aims to contribute to the analysis of feminism and patriarchal culture related to the objectification of women's bodies and their resistance in the memoir My Body released in 2021 and written by Emily Ratajkowski. The memoir My Body (2021) illustrates that patriarchal culture grows and develops in people's lives as shown by the dominance of men over women in various aspects of life which causes women's bodies to be objectified so that they experience limited access in various fields of life. The analysis in this study includes the depiction of patriarchal culture and objectification of women's bodies in the memoir My Body (2021) and the resistance to patriarchal culture carried out by female characters in the memoir My Body (2021). In conducting the analysis, the researcher used the literary criticism method by using the theory of feminism from Helene Cixous' thoughts to analyse feminism related to the culture of objectification of women's bodies and their resistance. The results of this study found 4 data in the form of narratives. This research describes body objectification as a culture that limits women that makes women disadvantaged, the culture depicts women as figures who depend on male superiority, and as objects of male lust. In their resistance, women reject norms by writing. Women also resist the culture of objectification by being independent from male roles, independent in defending themselves, and independent in making life decisions. Women are also portrayed as rebelling against male control. This research makes an answer to Helene Cixous' theory of "why women should write" because they have to "fight" the norms and culture that limit and harm women themselves and only fellow women understand how to be in that position.

Abstract

Stutterers are people with disfluencies in talking. They have problems maintaining their turn in a conversation. For that reason, they need to find some strategies to manage the conversation well. This study aims to find out what types of turn-taking strategies were used by stuttering people and why they tend to use them. The theories used in this research are from Stenstrom and Bloodstein. The data for this research are taken from three interview YouTube videos with stuttering people. The video was then analyzed based on Stenstrom's turn-taking strategy theory as well as Bloodstein's stuttering theory. The results of the analysis showed that the strategy most often used by the stuttering people is filled pause/verbal filler which is part of the holding the turn strategy. The purpose of this most commonly used strategy is to maintain the stutterer’s turns to speak so that there is no interruption by the interlocutor and it becomes part of the disfluencies suffered by people with stuttering, as a thought process in expressing words.

Abstract

All Distortions Are Intentional is an album from Neck Deep, which was released in 2020. The album consists of twelve songs that explore various themes, including the quarterlife crisis phenomenon. The research seeks to analyse the depiction of the quarterlife crisis phenomenon as experienced by the character through the theory of Michael Riffaterre's semiotics theory, emphasising two key approaches: 1) heuristic and hermeneutic reading, and 2) indirect expression. This research employs a qualitative approach, emphasising content analysis. This research employed content analysis to analyse the song lyrics from All Distortions Are Intentional album. This research identifies that the depiction of quarterlife crisis in All Distortions Are Intentional album presents in only three songs: Sonderland, Telling Stories, and Sick Joke. Those songs depict the quarterlife crisis through hermeneutic reading and indirect expression. Displacing of meaning consists of four data, while distorting of meaning and creating of meaning consist of three data that depict the quarterlife crisis phenomenon.

Abstract

This research examined the types and functions of social deixis in The Godfather movie using Levinson’s (1983) theory, focusing on how language reflects power, hierarchy, and social relationships within the mafia world. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The result of the research identifies 62 occurrences of relational social deixis, consisting of 21 referent honorifics, 33 addressee honorifics, and 8 bystander honorifics, as well as 21 occurrences of absolute social deixis, including 9 authorized speaker instances and 12 authorized recipient instances. The findings reveal that social deixis in The Godfather serves as a linguistic tool to establish authority, reinforce hierarchical structures, and convey respect and familiarity among characters. Through its use of formal address terms, honorifics, and social markers, the movie effectively illustrates how language shapes interpersonal dynamics and power relations, contributing to a deeper understanding of social deixis in cinematic dialogue and its implications in pragmatics.
