Hardi, E.H. (2023). Suboptimal land optimization for aquaculture: Indonesia's contribution to global food security. In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-11 Tahun 2023, Palembang 21 Oktober 2023. (pp. 25-32).  Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).In Indonesia, the subtropical land is dominated by peat and mangroves, both of which have the potential to be used for aquaculture. The implementation of smart aquaculture, in which the management uses four concepts including natural activity, zero waste, circular activity, and sustainability. Optimizing the mangroves ecosystem as an area for filtration and sedimentation for aquaculture and waste air before it is discharged is an important part of maintaining ponds. The utilization of plant extracts as antibacterial, immunostimulants, prebiotics, and natural pesticide is the foundational tenet of smart silvofishery as opposed to the cultivation practice of using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. There are four advantages to smart silvofishery: mangrove litter supplies total nutrients (nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus); increasing total plankton (8 phytoplankton species and 11 zooplankton species); suppressing pathogens in ponds; increasing the amino acid and fatty acid content of shrimp meat; and increasing pond production. Mangrove litter supplies total nutrients (nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus). Aquaculture carried out in peat and mangrove environments is safe (for the environment, fish, and customers) when smart silvofishery is utilized. This results in increased productivity while also maintaining the safety of the products that are created.

Abstract

Abstract

The availability of fish feed has remained an obstacle in the fish cultivation until now. The dependence on fish flour, soy flour, the imported cornstarch has not been solved, though the natural resource in Indonesia supports the dependence of this raw material availability. This research was conducted by testing the use of the fermented cassava flour to substitute cornstarch as the catfish feed, by adding natural drug product, BIOIMUNÒ, which positively affected growth, immunity, and production. Research methodology used was the Completely Randomized Design with six treatments and three repetitions. Fishes with average weight of 10 g and length of 10 cm were raised in the aquarium with dimension of 60x40x40 cm, with the density of 10 fishes per aquarium. The research was conducted for 60 days with observation every 14 days. Compositions of cornstarch and cassava flour were P1 (0/200), P2 (100/100), P3 (75/125), P4 (50/150), P5 (25/175), and P6 (commercial feed), added with BIOIMUNÒ at 20 ml/kg from the extracts of Solanum ferox and Zingiber zerumbet. Feed was given three times at a percentage of 5%. This research showed the result that the best growth was in treatment (P3), with 75 g of cornstarch and 125 g of cassava flour (75/125). The highest absolute weight gain was in P3 at 132.67 ± 8.33 g. The immunity system testing was in accordance with the result of phytochemical test of positive alkaloid, negative flavonoid, and negative steroid. Survival Rate (SR) based on the variance analysis (ANOVA) had an insignificant effect (P>0.05) 93.00-100.00%. P3 feed conversion rate was 5.35±0.23. Hematocrit level and total erythrocyte with a decent score and total leukocyte increased from P6. Feed proximate test was in accordance with the standard. Total bacteria were in the normal range, the contamination test on heavy metal proved no harm against the catfishes, and the water quality was normal. In terms of economic analysis, P1-P5 were more affordable than (P6), so that it can be concluded that the fermented cassava flour can be used as a replacement of corn by adding BIOIMUNÒ as the catfish feed.

Abstract

Using natural anesthetic materials to transport tilapia fry is crucial for finding sustainable alternatives to commonly used chemicals. This study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of lempuyang extract (Zingiber zerumbet) in transporting tilapia fry by increasing density and transportation duration while ensuring the well-being of the fry, as indicated by the survival rate. The study results suggest that Z. zerumbet can safely transport tilapia fry at a density of up to 145 fish/L, maintaining stable glucose levels and normal hematocrit. The survival rates remained consistently high at 99-100% with no significant differences. In conclusion, the study suggests that using Z. zerumbet at 5 mL/L in the transportation medium can support a density of 145 fish/L for up to 15 hours, making it an effective natural anesthetic for transporting fish fry.

Abstract

Muara Kembang is a sub-districts in Muara Jawa District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province, which borders the coast, so mangrove forests dominate its area. Deforestation of mangrove to be converted into ponds causes a decrease in the area of mangrove forests. Since 2001, the government has intensively rehabilitated mangroves and encouraged communities to plant mangroves independently. Planting mangroves in ponds differs from planting in coastal areas based on planting patterns and plant types. This field school aims to increase coastal communities' understanding of the importance of mangrove ecosystems and increase skills in planting mangroves, especially in active pond areas. The activities were carried out over two days at the Muara Kembang Village Hall. This activity was divided into two stages: lectures by resource people, discussions for the first stage and a mangrove planting simulation for the second stage. The data collection method was through a questionnaire, which was analyzed descriptively before and after training. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the understanding of field school participants has increased regarding the importance of mangrove ecosystems for the aquatic environment, coastal areas, and aquatic animals. Apart from that, participants also know and practice directly how to plant propagules according to the conditions of the surrounding waters. After this training, the participants' knowledge and abilities of mangroves and their planting can be implemented to plant mangroves in ponds.
