Abstract

This article tempts to verify the intricate dynamics of political alliances between Islamist groups and opposition parties in Indonesian elections, focusing on the 2018 West Java gubernatorial contest. The study employs exit poll data, investigating the relationship between religiosity, politico-religious narratives, and voting behaviour. While the mobilising power of Islamist groups appeals to political parties, creating a temporary alliance, these do not guarantee electoral triumph even in a conservative region. The politico-religious propaganda, in principle, consolidates Islamist-inclined voters. Despite high levels of religiosity among voters, the alliance's strategies fail to convey this religious mobilisation into broad electoral success. This underscores that the efficacy of such campaigns is contextually dependent and shaped by local socio-political conditions. However, the alliances offer potential political leverage, suggesting an enduring interplay between Islamist groups and political parties in the Indonesian electoral landscape. This exploration contributes to understanding the complexities of Islamist mobilisation within multi-level electoral contests.

Abstract

Pilkada is one of the means of democratic leadership succession in a country that claims to be a democracy. One indicator of the success of the democratic process, especially the elections, is the political participation of the community. Youth as an important segmentation in society also becomes important to be studied. This study aims to determine the level of youth participation in the West Java Provincial Election in 2018 and identify the factors driving youth political participation by using qualitative research methods. It is hoped that this research can be useful in improving the quality of Indonesian democracy in the future. The results of this study indicate that there are several factors that encourage an increase in youth political participation in the West Java Pilkad in 2018, namely the figure and track record of the candidate pairs, socialization and campaign factors, regional factors, ulama influence factors and political awareness of the community.

Abstract

This article examines the forms of politico-religious narratives constructed by Islamic parties in relation to public health support and electoral interests during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Focusing on the United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the study employs a political discourse analysis approach, drawing data from media reports and the parties’ official websites concerning the government’s pandemic response. The findings indicate that both PPP and PKS utilized religious narratives to provide a spiritual framework for interpreting the pandemic, which aligns with their respective political stances and electoral objectives. The PPP, with its traditionalist base and role within the governing coalition, framed the pandemic as a divine test, promoting adherence to health protocols and civil obedience with subtle criticism. In contrast, the oppositional PKS portrayed the pandemic as a disaster necessitating divine protection, while consistently criticizing the government’s handling of the crisis. The article concludes that Islamic parties’ disaster perspectives are shaped by the interplay of religious narratives and political interests.

Abstract

The implementation of village government archive management policies is the backbone of good governance at the local level. This article aims to analyze the implementation of archive management policies in the Cikeruh Village Government in support of the National Movement for Awareness of Archive Order (GNSTA). GNSTA encourages institutional awareness, including village governments, to create orderly policies, organizational order, human resource (HR) order, infrastructure order, and archive management order. A descriptive qualitative approach is used to review village archive policies, particularly in terms of the implementation of Official Document Arrangements (TND), Archive Classification (KA), Dynamic Archive Security and Access Classification System (SKKAD), and Archive Retention Schedule (JRA). The results of the study indicate that Cikeruh Village needs to strengthen the legitimacy of internal policies through Village Head Regulations (Perkades) and increase human resource capacity so that archive management can function as an accountability tool and facilitate public services. The implementation of the state archives management policy at the Cikeruh Village government level, Sumedang Regency, demonstrates important points that can increase village officials' awareness of state archives' continuing secondary value as a collective memory of the nation that is worthy of being preserved. This is supported by aspects of increasing the capacity of Archival Human Resources with the importance of collaboration for the sustainability of village administration and by aspects of the implementation of the Village Government Archives Management Application to accelerate excellent public services, as the 18th Village SDGs activity. Implementasi kebijakan pengelolaan arsip pemerintahan desa merupakan tulang punggung terwujudnya tata kelola pemerintahan yang baik (good governance) di tingkat lokal. Abstract

This study explores the reasons behind the decline of the Aceh Party in the Banda Aceh City legislative elections over four election cycles (2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024). After an initial success in 2009 with six seats, the party experienced a gradual decline, losing four seats in 2014, two in 2019, and ultimately losing all representation in 2024. This decline raises questions about the internal and external dynamics that influence the resilience of local parties in the post conflict period. The study employs a neo-institutional framework that combines the concepts of party institutionalization and public trust. The approach used is qualitative, using data collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and secondary data analysis. The analysis reveals three main findings. First, the ideological foundation of the Aceh Party is increasingly disconnected from the diverse urban population. Second, its legislative performance fails to project a credible image in the performance of its oversight and public representation functions. Third, internal conflict and leadership changes create a fragile and unstable organizational structure. In conclusion, the party's decline is not only due to changing voter preferences but also reflects deeper institutional challenges, the inability to adapt ideology to local realities, maintain organizational coherence, and meet demands for political accountability. These findings emphasize that identity-rooted parties must adapt their historical narratives to contemporary issues and strengthen transparent governance to remain relevant in the competitive political arena.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Makna Diri, Identitas Sosial, Sarjana Sosiologi, FenomenologiABSTRACT This study aims to understand the self-meaning and social identity of sociology graduates after graduation by applying George Herbert Mead’s theory of self and Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological approach. The issue arises from the tension between academic idealism and post-graduation social realities, particularly among social science graduates such as those in sociology, whose disciplines are not directly absorbed into the formal job market. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, involving six bachelor of sociology as informants from Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, class of 2020–2021. Data were collected through in-depth interviews on whatsapp phonecall (online) and analyzed thematically to capture the informants’ reflective experiences. The findings reveal that the formation of self-meaning among sociology graduates is non-linear and dialogical, constructed through symbolic struggles between the “I” and the “Me,” as well as reflections spanning from their college years to the post-campus phase. Their self-meaning is also shaped by intersubjective interactions and inner dialogues that occur within a phenomenological lifeworld (lebenswelt). This study enriches the understanding of Mead’s theory of self and Schutz’s phenomenology in the context of Indonesian sociology graduates who experience identity transformation in reflective and intersubjective ways. Keywords: Self-Meaning, Social Identity, Sociology Graduates, Phenomenology

Abstract

The article explores how Indonesian Muslim-based parties are structurally responding to, and using, post-2014 polarization in coalition politics through party institutionalization. Party institutionalization is understood as the mediator that shapes how polarization results in coalition formation, internal organizational dynamics, and electoral performance. A comparative case study of PKB, PKS, PAN, and PPP is covered here, based on interviews with party elites and activists for Islamic organizations, along with secondary sources, electoral reports, and media coverage. Results indicate patterned variation across parties. PKB and PKS, with more cohesive constituencies and stronger organizational capacity, have been able to better exploit the impact of polarization to reinforce partisan identity and enhance electoral prospects: PKB with an entrenched relationship with the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) milieu, while PKS uses polarization to consolidate after earlier internal frictions and expand its appeal among conservative electorates. In contrast, PAN’s more heterogeneous base creates tensions between the elite when a coalition’s maneuvers alienate an aspect of its supporters, whereas PPP’s weak organizational solidity propels it towards government alignment despite misfit with its base of voters. Overall, depending upon party institutionalization, polarization becomes either an electoral resource or an organizational burden.

Abstract

Although the overall electoral support for Muslim-based parties in Indonesia has been relatively stable since the Reformasi, the 2024 election represents a critical moment in which the PPP failed to pass the parliamentary threshold. This divergence raises the question: why did PPP break down while other major Muslim-based parties (PKS, PKB, PAN) persisted? Employing a qualitative comparative approach, this paper contends that electoral performance is shaped by the constitutive interplay of governance capacity and strategic adaptation. We show that PKS pursues bounded adaptation and relies on relatively high governance capacity to maintain loyalty among its core constituencies; PKB mixes established governance with high strategic adaptation in order to use NU based networks and presidential coattail effects; and PAN pairs relatively high governance capacity and aggressive demographic segmentation. By contrast, the demise of PPP is attributed to low or incoherent governance capacity, which renders its adaptive strategy sporadic and lacking credibility. Theoretically, this article shifts the analytical focus from static party institutionalization to dynamic organizational capability. It also argues that religious identity becomes an electoral asset when it is managed through a balance between internal governance and adaptation, with institutions strong enough to withstand the shocks of strategic pragmatism.
