Abstract

This study aims to analyze the policies of two ministries, namely the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) at the elementary and junior high school levels, in implementing the education curriculum in Indonesia. This study is qualitative with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Data in the form of scientific articles collected from 2015–2024. The data collection technique used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) procedure. The study results show significant differences in the curriculum's structure, focus, and approach implemented by the two ministries. The Ministry of Religious Affairs curriculum emphasizes integrating religious values with science. In contrast, the curriculum under the Ministry of Education and Culture focuses more on developing general competencies based on science and technology. However, there is potential to synergize the policies of the two ministries to create a more holistic curriculum, which not only builds intellectual intelligence but also strengthens religious character and national insight. This study recommends harmonizing inter-ministerial policies through more intensive coordination mechanisms and adapting inclusive curricula according to the needs of the multicultural society in Indonesia. This study focuses on policy analysis at the ministerial level and does not directly evaluate school or district-level curriculum implementation. This study contributes by comparatively analyzing the education policies of two ministries in Indonesia, which have not been widely discussed in previous studies. This study also highlights the importance of policy synergy in building an integrative and adaptive curriculum to the challenges of education in a culturally and religiously diverse society.

Abstract

Background: Max Weber's theory of rationalization and bureaucracy offers a critical framework for understanding organizational structures in Islamic education. However, the standardization inherent in bureaucratic systems often conflicts with the decentralized and value-driven nature of Islamic education. Purpose: This study explores the reconstruction of rationalization in Islamic education management through Weber's bureaucratic theory, analyzing how it can be harmonized with Islamic values. Method: A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted, synthesizing research from databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Result: The findings reveal that while Weberian bureaucracy, characterized by hierarchical authority and legal-rational procedures, enhances efficiency, it may also introduce rigidity that limits innovation and adaptability to modern challenges. This study proposes a balanced approach that integrates bureaucratic efficiency with Islamic ethical principles, emphasizing flexibility, value-based leadership, and cultural integration. Implication: The research provides valuable insights for policymakers and educational leaders seeking to modernize governance frameworks while preserving core Islamic values. It highlights the importance of adapting Weber's bureaucratic model to meet contemporary educational demands without compromising spiritual and moral integrity. Conclusion: The study concludes by advocating for an integrated approach that combines bureaucratic structures with Islamic values, fostering management systems that are both efficient and responsive. Future research should further explore the application of Weber's theory in Islamic education, focusing on leadership, cultural considerations, and the implications for governance and educational reform.

Abstract

Despite ongoing global efforts to end child marriage, the practice remains widespread in Indonesia. In 2024, Pasuruan recorded some of the highest child marriage rates. Ngantungan Village in Pasrepan is a striking example of how entrenched cultural beliefs and economic pressures continue to drive the trend. This study investigates how structural discrimination—primarily through the practice of ijbār (coercive guardianship) in Islamic legal interpretation—clashes with the best interests of the child (BIC) and perpetuates early marriage. Fieldwork included interviews with religious authorities, local officials, guardians, and young people involved in these marriages. The findings reveal that although Islamic jurisprudence allows guardians to arrange underage marriages under certain conditions, ijbār is frequently misapplied in ways that ignore girls' autonomy and strip them of their right to participate in life-changing decisions. In Ngantungan, traditional myths—like the belief that rejecting too many proposals dooms a girl to lifelong singleness—create social pressure, particularly for girls from low-income families with little formal education. For many, early marriage is seen not as a choice but as the only viable escape from economic hardship. Tackling this issue calls for more than legal reform. It demands a cultural shift, localized education initiatives, and financial support programs that offer meaningful alternatives and disrupt the cycle of child marriage.

Abstract

It is undeniable that many Orientalist works have hurt Oriental images up to the present time. However, it is equally important to acknowledge the positive contributions of Orientalist scholarship to the advancement of Oriental studies. In the context of Indonesian Islamic studies, both Western researchers (Orientalists) and Indonesian-born Muslim scholars have played a significant role in shaping Islamic educational institutions and influencing individual Muslim scholars. In terms of higher education institutions, all traditional State Islamic institutions (IAINs) and most of the State Islamic Colleges (STAINs) have been transformed into Islamic State Universities. At the individual level, a substantial number of Indonesian-born scholars—many of whom studied under Orientalists in Western universities—have emerged as influential figures, making significant contributions to the development of both Islamic and general academic fields in Indonesia. However, over the past decade or so, such influence has notably declined. By utilizing data from individual initiative research and employing ‘loose’ text and contextual analysis methods, this article examines the early progress and recent decline of Orientalist influence on Indonesian Islamic studies, and discusses potential future trajectories.

Abstract

Media use in learning has become an integral part of the modern education landscape. Despite the continuous advancements in educational technology, the effectiveness of learning media remains significantly determined by the pedagogical approach employed. One relevant and potentially impactful approach for optimizing media utilization is social constructivism, developed by Lev Vygotsky. This approach emphasizes that learning occurs through social interaction, supported by more competent individuals through the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) concepts and scaffolding. This study analyzes how learning media can be effectively integrated through Vygotsky's constructivist approach. The method employed in this research is library research, which reviews various theoretical sources and relevant prior research findings. The results of the review indicate that integrating media based on social constructivism can enhance student engagement, foster collaborative interaction, and strengthen the knowledge construction process. Thus, utilizing media aligned with the principles of Vygotsky's constructivism is a crucial strategy in creating meaningful and contextual learning experiences.

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze how one group, that is, the Justice and Welfare Party (PKS), is attempting to clean up politics from within the political party system. This article argues that the existence of PKS has given a new but unique political nuance to the political party system in post-New Order Indonesia. The seemingly sudden rise of PKS has taken many by surprise, and it is for this that the party has become the topic of much discourse amongst scholars of Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i1.555

Abstract

This article attempts to explore a study of Islam in Java in the frame of the above conception -the dialogue tradition. The process of acculturation between Islam and Javanese culture, which developed in the dialogue tradition, is the central point of this article. Religious discourses embodied in Javanese texts, such as suluk and babad, written in the period of the establishment of Islam until the 19th century, are considered as the cultural representation of the fault line -despite the harmonious reconciliation- between Islam and Javanese tradition. In this context, changes in social and political affairs in Javanese courts, especially crucial changes in the 19th century following the colonialism, implanted the emergence of religious discourses embedded in the Javanese texts observed in this article.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v7i2.712

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of government budget efficiency measures on the quality of Islamic education in Indonesia. As Islamic education plays a crucial role in the national education system—serving millions of students across Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and madrasas—budgetary policies are likely to have significant consequences for educational outcomes, teacher welfare, infrastructure, and institutional sustainability. This research employs a qualitative literature review methodology, drawing on secondary sources such as scholarly publications, policy reports, recent academic articles, and digital media content, including YouTube and other social platforms. A descriptive analytical approach is utilized to assess the extent to which budget efficiency policies influence the quality of Islamic educational institutions. The findings indicate that budget reductions adversely affect teacher professional development initiatives, availability of educational facilities, and the overall welfare of teachers. Furthermore, diminished financial support has led to reduced access to essential educational resources for students in madrasas and pesantren. To address these challenges, the study recommends the implementation of alternative strategies, including strengthened governance mechanisms, increased collaboration with the private sector, and more transparent, targeted budget management practices. The study concludes with a call for further empirical research to deepen understanding of the long-term implications of budget efficiency measures on Islamic education in Indonesia.
