Abstract

Abstract Balinese has two forms in relation to nasal pre xes. First, the initial segment of the verb root can be assimilated with the homorganic nasal and both coalesce. Second, the nasal pre x still assimilates with the rst segment of the verb root but forms a CC cluster. The data source of this study is Balinese dictionaries and analyzed by Optimality Theoretic (OT) so it was found that the af x nasal did not form a cluster with the rst segment of the verb root uniformly occurred in verbs where the rst segment is obstruent both voiced and voiceless while the one forming the cluster is the rst segment of a verb root which is realized by a sonorant. The rst phenomenon can be handled by the constraint * NC (obs) while the second one by violates linearity constraint, namely, Align-L (root) constraint. OT analysis also predicts that the ungrammaticality of an output verb structure ngmaang ‘to give’ due to fact that the correct underlying form baang is confused with its corresponding surface form. Keywords: nasalization, obstruent, sonorant, OT analysis Abstrak Bahasa Bali mempunyai dua bentuk dalam kaitannya dengan pre x nasal. Abstract

This study aims to analyze and identify the fulfillment of basic psychological needs how this fulfillment shapes the types of motivation. The data were taken from the movie Good Will Hunting through the documentation method and note-taking technique. The data analyzed descriptively using qualitative research methods by applying Self-Determination Theory by Ryan and Deci (2017). Informal methods supported by narrative technique were used in presenting the data analyzed. The findings reveal that the fulfillment of the main character basic psychological needs autonomy (asserted through confronting fears and making authentic decisions), competence (realized by reframing challenges as growth opportunities), and relatedness (achieved through bonds of trust and vulnerability with Sean and Skylar) directly shapes his motivational landscape. His motivations transition dynamically from amotivation, characterized by disengagement and self-sabotage when needs are thwarted, through various forms of extrinsic motivation, culminating in intrinsic motivation driven by emotional liberation and self-determination as needs are met. The analysis underscores that psychological need fulfillment is foundational to motivational quality, facilitated by supportive relationships and self-reflection. Keywords: movie, motivation, basic psychological needs, types of motivation

Abstract

This study is entitled Semiotic Analysis of Absurdism through the Main Character in the Film Trainspotting. The discussion touches upon the concept of absurdism and how it is reflected through signs in the film Trainspotting (1996), directed by Danny Boyle. The film portrays the life of Mark Renton, a heroin addict living in 1990s Scotland, who struggles to find meaning in an indifferent world. This research analysed the denotative and connotative signs that reflect the main character’s struggle with absurdism and how these signs portray the character’s responses to the absurd, whether through escape or rebellion. This study employed Roland Barthes’ (1991) theory of two-level semiotics to analyse the denotative and connotative meanings of signs, and Albert Camus’ (1955) theory of absurdism to interpret the character’s existential responses. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected by watching the film and analysing both verbal and non-verbal signs using Barthes’ semiotic framework. These findings indicate that Trainspotting contains strong elements of absurdism that can be uncovered through semiotic analysis.

Abstract

This study is entitled Japanese Clause Relativization Strategy. The purpose of this study is to describe the structure, strategy, and previous functions of relative clauses in Japanese. The theory used in analyzing the formulation of problems related to relative clauses in this study refers to the theory developed by Dixon (2010) in his book entitled "Basic Linguistic Theory 2". This study summarizes the analysis in micro linguistics, namely syntax. Syntactically, the antecedent in the Japanese relative clause is positioned at the end. In Japanese relative clauses, there are no relative markers. Only antecedents that are attached directly to the predicate are part of the relative clause. The function of the relative clause is to explain nouns or noun phrases which in Japanese are called hishuushokumeishi. This research is included in qualitative research. The data analyzed in this study came from the media and publications from the site https://www.sukasuki.org/koran-sukasuki. This study produced several points, including that Japanese relative clauses precede the nouns that are described or known by the previous term. The basic structure of relative clauses in Japanese always begins with a clause that describes and ends with the noun being described. Antecedents in Japanese can be nouns, noun phrases, or particles such as no and koto. There are no conjunctions such as "yang" in Indonesian or "who/which" in English. In this study, pseudo-conjunctions such as ni kan suru and to iu were found. Predicates in Japanese relative clauses can be verbs, verbs conjugated with hojodoushi, nouns, and can also be adjectives.

Abstract

This research is a pragmatic study of the use of negative politeness strategies. This study aims to identify negative politeness strategies used by characters in films and to analyze why characters in films use negative politeness strategies in their speech. This study will use a qualitative method in utilizing the study of negative politeness strategies by describing the problem as clearly as possible. The data will be taken from a film called Charlie's Angels 2019. The theory that will be used in this research is the theory proposed by Brown and Levinson's negative politeness strategy in 1992. The results of this study conclude that there are ten strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson as a way to direct, does not assume or presuppose, and does not force and fulfill the other wishes of the listener. The negative politeness strategy has several sub-strategies that have different goals. They use strategies related to the context of the conversation and the situation.

Abstract

The growth of the beauty industry has led to the increased use of bilingual advertisements to reach a broader audience. However, the differences in cultural and linguistic contexts between the source and target languages of the advertisements often lead to shifts in meaning. In this context, it is the translator's responsibility to act as a bridge to fill this gap. This research aims to identify and analyse the translation techniques used in bilingual beauty product advertisements and to examine how these techniques reflect translation equivalence. This research employs a qualitative method using the theory of translation techniques by Molina and Albir (2002) and the concept of translation equivalence by Nida and Taber (1969). The data were collected from bilingual beauty product advertisements sourced from the official YouTube channel of Maybelline New York. Data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques and then analysed by comparing English and Indonesian subtitle transcripts to identify the applied translation techniques and the type of equivalence achieved. The results were presented with a formal method through the use of table and informal method to describe the analysis. The findings revealed that eleven out of eighteen translation techniques were used, discursive creation, borrowing, linguistic compression, modulation, amplification, literal translation, linguistic amplification, reduction, transposition, adaptation, and generalization. The application of these techniques primarily achieved dynamic equivalence. Meanwhile, formal equivalence was achieved when the source and target language structures closely aligned.

Abstract

The advances in the movie industry have led to the rapid rise of streaming platforms, becoming increasingly popular among people. With countries around the world constantly producing movies, subtitles play an essential role in making films more accessible to a broader audience. Subtitling strategies can be defined as a translation practice involving the display of written text, usually at the bottom of the screen, to convey the original dialogues of the speakers and the information contained in the soundtrack. This study uses data from the lk21 website and analyzes it using Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies theory, which consists of ten specific methods for audiovisual translation: Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Transcription, Deletion, Dislocation, Condensation, Decimation, and Resignation. A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted in this study with observation, classification, and note-taking of each subtitle, suitable for the research, and describing the subtitling strategies applied in the movie. The findings show that seven strategies were applied in the Indonesian subtitles, namely paraphrase, transfer, condensation, imitation, deletion, dislocation, and expansion. Among them, paraphrase emerged as the most frequently used strategy, likely because figurative or culture-specific expressions in the source text often required adaptation to preserve their meaning for Indonesian viewers. On the other hand, expansion was identified as the least applied strategy, suggesting that the original dialogues rarely demanded additional explanation. Overall, the strategic use of these methods contributed to producing subtitles that were coherent, culturally adapted, and highly accessible to the target audience.

Abstract

This research investigates the relationship between phonology and morphology in influencing the changing Balinese speech level, namely ‘singgih’ (high) and ‘sor’ (low). The analysis focuses on utilizing the internal modification of a formal morphological element (root) in Balinese that creates a pattern of alternation apophony for vowel and consonant mutation, which lead to the transformation of speech level. Qualitative data analysis, including internal structure diagrams and observation, is used to analyze the data. There are 54 words found in the data findings using the documentation method from Balinese dictionary. The analysis results are (1) the alternate vowels and the mutation of consonant distinguished the level of the word without changing the meaning; (2) most of the alternation vowels change from [+low, +back] vowel into [+high] vowel, namely umlaut process; (3) the consonant mutation corresponds with the phonological sets of the consonant in initial position or phoneme addition in the middle position. Thus, this study has enriched and enlarged the linguistics documentation for the umlaut and ablaut existence in the Austronesian language.
