Abstract

Indonesian lacks dedicated logophoric pronouns. Instead, logophoric references are encoded through the use of reflexive pronouns within the discourse context. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between reflexive anaphors and logophoricity in Indonesian. Specifically, it seeks to demonstrate that a particular form, namely the complex reflexive formed by combining diri with possessive pronouns, is exclusively associated with logophoricity. The data for this study was extracted from naturally occurring expressions found in the Leipzig corpora. Analysis was conducted using discourse syntax, which examines the interplay between syntax and the surrounding textual environment, to observe the resulting phenomena. The findings indicate that logophors in Indonesian differ significantly from reflexive anaphors in four key aspects. Firstly, logophoric pronouns, unlike reflexive pronouns, can be bound at a long distance. Nevertheless, they still adhere to the principles of binding theory regarding their antecedents. Secondly, logophoric pronouns may not necessarily agree in phi features with their antecedents. Thirdly, the logophoric anaphor can occupy various grammatical functions, including both object and subject positions. Lastly, unlike reflexivization, logophoric constructions in Indonesian are subject to passivization.

Abstract

This undergraduate thesis examines English diphthong pronunciation errors among fifth-grade students at North Bali Bilingual School, with a specific focus on centring and opening diphthongs using Peter Roach's theory. The primary aim is to identify the errors made by the students and determine the underlying factors contributing to these errors. The research employs a qualitative method supported by quantitative data, involving voice recordings collected via VoiceMemos on an iPhone, which were then phonetically transcribed. Additionally, a questionnaire was administered to gather background information on the students that might explain the pronunciation errors. The findings reveal that while the majority of students can correctly produce diphthong sounds, 22% of them made pronunciation errors. The most frequently mispronounced diphthongs were /ɪə/ with 75% errors, /ɑʊ/ with 59% errors, and /eə/ with 25% errors. The questionnaire results suggest that the primary factors contributing to these errors include the students' native language, phonological interference, avoidance strategies, and potential neurodevelopmental disorders. The research provides insights into the specific challenges faced by bilingual students in mastering English diphthongs and highlights the need for targeted interventions to address these pronunciation issues.

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the message of a person who committed suicide in a letter that was found on 7th September 2021. To define the messages in the letter, this study observed the realization of the theme and rheme types and structure. So, there are three focuses of this study; (1) how is the realization of theme and rheme in the letter, (2) how is the structure of the theme and rheme in the letter, and (3) what are the messages the person who committed suicide wanted the readers to know. The analysis defined three findings. First, most of the themes are in the type of single-ideational which explains the confession of the writer because the theory of ideational theme explains it as a theme for a statement or declarative mode of clause. In this first finding, the writer was identified as well-committed in his action of doing suicide. Second, all the themes from each clause are linked in a Constant thematic pattern. This second finding explains the cohesion of the ideas of the writer in his writings. Third, the statement of the writer which was indicated by the single ideational theme and the message unity which was explained the by finding of the constant thematic progression pattern explained 4 messages (1) a giving responsibility of his children to his wife, (2) complains about his wife disrespect to him, (3) a farewell to his children, and (4) a confirmation of his authorship in the letter. The messages which are defined in the letter tell that the motive of the suicide is “a long-term marriage conflict”.

Abstract

Since the pandemic has been over, a question come asking ‘Did online learning during the pandemic of Covid-19 enhance digital reading habits?’ Answering that inquiry, this study focuses on two questions (1) how are digital reading habits (preference and frequency) of EFL learners? And (2) Why does digital reading habit of EFL learners in that way? This is a qualitative descriptive study. This study collected data by administering written interviews via Google form to 24 informants. There are 15 questions asked to the 24 informants and after analyzing the data, the following findings are found. First, all EFL learners prefer reading digitally either for college assignments, articles, books, or novels. However, due to their preference, EFL learners are reading viral news on social media much more than other reading material. Related to the frequency, the highest frequency of reading is at the level of ‘seldom’ for all of the reading material. So, the digital reading habits of EFL learners are still in poor condition since their preference and frequency are far from accessing scientific articles and books digitally. Answering the second question of the reason for the EFL digital reading habit in that condition, the data analysis comes to the conclusion of learners’ bad digital literacy in accessing scientific articles and books digitally. From the interview questions and the informants' responses, there were found that even though the online learners had been for more than two years, the EFL learners’ digital literacy was in bad condition and so affected the reading preference and frequency in digital.

Abstract

This study analyzes the iPhone 15 Pro advertisement video using a semiotic approach to uncover the meanings behind its verbal and visual signs. The research identifies various types of signs, including denotative elements like technical specifications the A17 PRO chip, Action button, and portrait features and connotative elements such as color schemes, imagery, and product design. Through Roland Barthes' theory of denotation, connotation, and myth, the study explores how these signs convey messages of sophistication, versatility, and empowerment. The advertisement uses visual cues like sleek grey tones, white text, and yellow highlights to emphasize modernity and functionality, while verbal descriptions highlight technological innovation and user customization. Together, these elements create a myth of technological superiority, artistic empowerment, and social status associated with owning an iPhone 15 Pro. The findings demonstrate how Apple integrates semiotic strategies to appeal to consumers emotionally and culturally, reinforcing its brand identity as a leader in innovation and design. This research contributes to understanding how semiotic analysis can reveal the layered meanings in advertising and their impact on consumer perception.

Abstract

Student motivation is crucial to success in learning a foreign language. This study focuses on analyzing the motivation of students studying Indonesian as a foreign language in the Bipas in-country learning program at Udayana University in Bali. Specifically, the study is aimed at investigating the motivations of foreign students learning Indonesian in the program, and whether students' learning motivation shifts by the end of the course. The study involved 38 foreign students and five Indonesian lecturers during the Spring 2024 semester as respondents, and applied an explanatory sequential mixed methods design which consists of two phases, namely a quantitative phase and a qualitative phase to collect data. The results show that, despite strong support from the Balinese community for using the Indonesian language, students' motivation shifted from instrumental to integrative at the end of the course. Integrative motivation, which is prevalent, is defined as a desire to connect with the culture and community. Instrumental motivation ,on the other hand,  such as the expectation that learning Indonesian will open up career opportunities or improve social status, remains relatively low. To increase overall motivation, the learning programme should combine the two types of motivation, strengthening the sense of social connection and emphasising the practical value and tangible benefits of learning Indonesian.
