Abstract

True shallot seed (TSS) is one of the alternative potential technologies to solve the availability of seed quality on shallot in Indonesia. Another problem in shallot production is infection by purple blotch and twisted disease. This research evaluated the potency of Rhizophagus intraradices and Trichoderma asperellum as bioprotectants and biofertilizer. T. asperellum was mixed in the soil before seedling transplanting, and R. intraradices was applied around the seedling roots at transplanting. The observed parameters were the shallot growth (the plant height, number of leaves, and length of root), plant health (disease incidence and intensity), and bulb resistance to Fusarium solani. The result showed that R. intraradices and T. asperellum increased the resistance of onion bulbs to the pathogen F. solani in the postharvest period, indicated by R. intraradices treatment that had an infection area of 21.99 mm2, followed by T. asperellum treatment 26.63 mm2, and control of 37.66 mm2. Keywords: Rhizophagus intraradices, Trichoderma asperellum, true shallot seed

Abstract

The Troso weaving industry in Jepara, Indonesia, is a traditional craft sector that relies on synthetic dyes and manual production, thereby exposing workers to chromium (Cr) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) with potential respiratory and neurological risks. This study aimed to analyze their association with respiratory and neurological disorders among workers. A cross-sectional design was applied involving 101 weaving workers from four production sites. Environmental sampling measured Cr concentrations in wastewater and PM2.5/PM10 in the ambient air, while worker characteristics and health complaints were assessed using the ECSC-87 and Q18 questionnaire. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests and odds ratios. Cr concentrations in wastewater ranged from <0.010 to 0.104 mg/L, remaining below the effluent quality standard of 1.0 mg/L but confirming the continuous use of chromium-based dyes discharged without treatment. Average PM2.5 and PM10 levels were 108.75 µg/m³ and 117.75 µg/m³, both exceeding national air quality standards (55 and 75 µg/m³). Bivariate analysis showed that respiratory disorders were significantly associated with exposure duration ≥40 hours/week (OR=7.333; p=0.0001) and working period >5 years (OR=20.935; p=0.0001), whereas dye type, dyeing frequency, and PPE use were not significant. Neurological disorders were significantly associated with exposure duration (p=0.001), working period (p=0.001), type of dye (p=0.0001), frequency of dyeing (p=0.018), and PPE use (p=0.0001). Environmental monitoring confirmed elevated PM levels and chromium-based dye use, while statistical analysis showed that prolonged exposure and long working periods associated with respiratory disorders, and neurological disorders were linked to multiple occupational factors.

Abstract

Introduction: The rising global production of municipal solid waste (MSW) poses significant ecological challenges. In developing countries, inadequate landfill management results in the uncontrolled release of hazardous gases and leachate, posing significant risks to human health. This systematic review investigated the association between environmental factors at these landfills and adverse human health outcomes. Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search was rapidly conducted across ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and EBSCOhost for articles published between 2020 and 2025. PECO criteria screening was conducted independently by two reviewers, resulting in the selection of 25 articles for critical synthesis. Results: Hazardous landfill pollutants—including heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter—are rapidly escalating severe health issues. Residents and landfill workers face acute respiratory and cardiovascular disorders, heightened cancer risk, reproductive issues, and neurological impairments. Leachate contamination of soil and groundwater compounds these urgent systemic risks. Conclusion:The ongoing failure to manage landfills effectively, particularly in developing countries, has triggered a pressing environmental and public health crisis. Immediate action to improve waste management and enforce stricter environmental policies is critical for preventing further harm.

Abstract

Indoor air quality is a crucial aspect of creating a healthy and productive work environment. Decreased air quality has the potential to cause various health problems in building occupants. One of the health problems that is often associated with poor indoor air quality is Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). This study aims to synthesize findings from various studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of environmental risk factors that contribute to the occurrence of SBS. This study is a literature review to review the results of previous studies related to indoor air quality and sick building syndrome. The search database used in searching for this article comes from national and international journals. The selection of articles is based on inclusion criteria, including publication within the last 10 years, a cross-sectional study design, and discussion of indoor air quality in relation to the occurrence of SBS. The results of the review of 10 articles showed that the factors that trigger the onset of sick building syndrome symptoms include temperature, humidity, lighting, particulates (PM2.5 and PM10), air flow rate, ventilation systems, and exposure to chemical contaminants. Environmental management as an effort to overcome the occurrence of sick building syndrome includes improving the ventilation system, controlling temperature and humidity, managing chemical contaminants, controlling particulates, and improving lighting. SBS symptoms are influenced by several environmental factors that can affect worker health and productivity. Therefore, environmental management is needed as a way to overcome the occurrence of SBS.

Abstract

The Asiatic citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is the primary vector of the destructive citrus disease huanglongbing (HLB), posing a significant threat to citrus production in Indonesia. Systematic surveys of D. citri are essential for identifying areas at high risk of HLB outbreaks and for supporting sustainable disease management. This study aimed to assess the population distribution of D. citri in major citrus-producing regions of Indonesia and to evaluate its potential risk for HLB spread. The research was conducted over two consecutive years (2022–2023) across key citrus production areas on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Bali. A total of 206 sampling sites were surveyed using direct manual inspection and two types of yellow traps. D. citri was detected at 35 locations, representing new country records. The distribution pattern was relatively uniform in Sumatra but more scattered in Java and Kalimantan, with the highest population densities observed in the lowland areas of Bengkulu. These findings provide critical insights into D. citri distribution patterns and support targeted surveillance and sustainable management strategies to mitigate the impact of HLB in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Sinduadi Village, located in Mlati Subdistrict, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is home to several active horticultural farmer groups. Among their commodity crops, longan cultivation in Sinduadi Village has faced persistent constraints, particularly low productivity. To address this limitation, a community service program was initiated to introduce a superior local variety, the ‘Sleman’ longan. This cultivar was developed through sustained research and breeding by the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding, Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Stingless bees, locally known as klanceng bees, play an important role as pollinators in horticultural systems. Integrating longan cultivation with stingless beekeeping as a managed pollination strategy is expected to improve longan productivity and support more sustainable farm management. The program applied a comprehensive capacity building approach, including lectures, extension sessions, hands-on training, and regular monitoring. These activities aimed to strengthen both conceptual understanding and practical competence related to cultivation of the ‘Sleman’ longan variety and stingless beekeeping management. The program resulted in an observable improvement in participants’ knowledge and skills within the Sinduadi Village farming group. Improvements in farmer capacity will be evaluated through continued monitoring of field practices and performance over time. Although short-term gains in yield have not yet been observed, substantial longer-term benefits are anticipated as the plants establish, adapt, and enter stable production. Overall, this knowledge transfer is expected to empower the community to address local agricultural constraints more independently and to promote sustained improvements in livelihood and well-being.

Abstract

Increasing soil salinity led to a decline in rice yield, particularly in the coastal areas of West Aceh affected by the 2004 tsunami. This study aimed to examine the characteristics of soil salinity in the coastal rice fields of West Aceh during the rainy and dry growing seasons, and to evaluate its impact on rice yield. Soil sampling was conducted using purposive sampling during two growing seasons: the dry growing season (April-September 2024) and the rainy growing season (October 2024-March 2025). Clustering analysis showed that three clusters (sodic and saline-sodic) formed during the dry season, while two clusters (sodic and non-saline non-sodic) formed during the rainy season. The Suak Pante Breuh site changed cluster membership, being sodic in the dry season and non-saline non-sodic in the rainy season. Among all soil chemical properties, soil electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) showed the strongest negative correlations with rice yield, particularly during the dry growing season (r = -0.55; r = -0.50). This study found that rice yield was more affected by salinity than by sodicity. This was illustrated in the Suak Timah 5 site, which was classified as sodic during the rainy season but showed similar rice yields to non-saline and non-sodic sites. In contrast, during the dry season, this site was classified as saline–sodic and recorded lower rice yields than other locations that were classified as sodic.
