Abstract

Background: Many parents encourage their children to take additional lessons to enhance their academic performance, while other important aspects, such as students' physical fitness, are often overlooked. Objectives: This research investigates the relationship between physical fitness and learning achievement among high school students in Semarang. Methods: This observational study employed a cross-sectional design and involved 396 high school students in Semarang, with 86 subjects selected randomly. The dependent variable was learning achievement, measured by the raw scores of the final semester exams. The independent variable was physical fitness, while the other confounding variables included nutritional status, food consumption, socioeconomic conditions, health status, and participation in private tutoring. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24-hour food recall method. Body Mass Index for age (BMI/A) was calculated using weight and height to evaluate nutritional status. The multistage fitness test was utilized to assess physical fitness. Additional data were collected through interviews. Data analysis was conducted using chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression. Results: The results indicated that most subjects had inadequate nutrient intake, with low percentages for energy (55.8%), carbohydrates (76.7%), protein (45.3%), and iron (64%). In contrast, fat intake was predominantly categorized as excessive (39.5%). While most subjects exhibited good nutritional status (79.1%), their physical fitness levels were primarily poor (58.1%). Multivariate analysis revealed that good physical fitness and participation in additional lessons were positively correlated with learning achievement (p-value=0.025, p-value=0.017). Conclusions: Enhancing physical fitness is essential for improving student learning outcomes. Participating in supplementary activities, such as attending additional lessons, is also necessary to improve student learning achievement.

Abstract

Malnutrition among children under five remains a significant public health issue in Pekalongan City, affecting their growth, development, and long-term quality of life. In response, the local government has implemented a Supplementary Feeding Program (PMT) using locally sourced, high-nutrient food ingredients that are affordable and accessible. This study aims to analyze the implementation of local food-based PMT and its impact on improving the nutritional status of malnourished children under five. Employing a mixed methods approach, the study combined quantitative research using a case control design with qualitative data from in-depth interviews. A total of 280 malnourished children were selected through purposive sampling. Key variables measured included nutritional status (based on weight-for-age) and the type and frequency of PMT provided. Data were collected via anthropometric assessments and direct observation, and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in the nutritional status of the children following a 30-day local food-based PMT intervention (p < 0.05). The PMT menus—featuring ingredients such as tempeh, eggs, sweet potatoes, and local vegetables—were shown to meet daily energy and macronutrient requirements. The study concludes that local food-based PMT is an effective, sustainable strategy to address childhood malnutrition and can serve as a model for community-based nutrition interventions.

Abstract

Stunting in children increases their risk of mortality, cognitive impairment, motor development, and poor body function. This study aimed to examine the relationship between low birth weight, low birth length, sex, age, and weight growth status and the prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting in children aged 6–36 months in West Lombok Regency, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2023 and May 2024 with 544 children. Secondary data were obtained from two community health centers in the study area. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation test and chi-square test. Results: Birth weight and length were significantly associated with nutritional status in children. Higher birth weight was positively correlated with a better weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ; p = 0,001), height-for-age Z-score (HAZ; p = 0,009), and weight-for-height Z-score (WHZ; p = 0,0001), indicating a strong influence on overall growth and nutritional outcomes. Similarly, a greater birth length was significantly associated with WAZ (p = 0,0001), HAZ (p = 0,002), and WHZ (p = 0,006). Age was also correlated with HAZ (p = 0,005) and incidence of stunting (p = 0,0001), suggesting an age-related cumulative effect on linear growth. Moreover, children with low birth weight had a significantly higher risk of stunting (p = 0,0007), whereas those with low birth length were more likely to be underweight (p = 0,050). In conclusion, LBW and LBL are significant risk factors for stunting, wasting, and underweight in children aged 6–36 months in West Lombok Regency.

Abstract

Introduction: Mental health is a crucial human right, especially for adolescents. The WHO states that more than 50% of mental disorders appear by the age of 14, yet often go undetected, negatively impacting education and socialization. RISKESDAS 2013-2018 showed an increase in mental emotional disorders in 15 years old and above from 6.0% to 9.8%. Surveillance of child and adolescent mental health is critical, requiring awareness and resource allocation. Schools, as the closest environment, play a role in early detection of mental disorders and should increase knowledge about mental health to reduce stigma. This increased knowledge is essential for adolescents to overcome mental health problems and maintain a better quality of life. Methods: This study used a systematic literature review approach by following the PRISMA method. Data searches were conducted in October 2024 through various sources such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, with the keywords “Mental Health Knowledge” and “Adolescent Mental Health”. So that a total of 20 articles were eligible for use in this study. Results: The 20 articles showed that interventions such as socialization and school health efforts significantly improved adolescents' knowledge about mental health. Conclusion: A significant increase in adolescents' knowledge related to mental health was made after the provision of interventions or treatments such as socialization, school health efforts and exposure related to mental health in adolescents. This is known based on the increase in scores on the adolescent post-test. KEYWORDS: Mental Health Knowledge; Adolescent Mental Health;

Abstract

Background: Menstruation, a normal part of puberty, is frequently misinterpreted because of societal stigma and limited access to proper education. Educational settings and peer-based programs are key in enhancing both menstrual and nutritional health, which are vital to supporting the overall well-being of adolescent girls. This Study aims to explore the factors influencing the promotion of menstrual health through nutrition education and peer-based interventions for adolescent girls using a scoping review methodology. Subject and Method: This scoping review was conducted using data obtained from PubMed Central, Science Direct and Google Scholar. The target population includes adolescent girl related to their menstrual health, nutritional education and peer-based intervention. A search was conducted using the keywords “Menstrual health" AND "nutritional education" AND "peer-based interventions" AND ("adolescent girls" OR "teen girls" OR "adolescent health") AND ("menstruation" OR "menstrual hygiene" OR "menstrual health promotion") AND ("nutrition" OR "diet" OR "healthy eating") AND ("peer support" OR "peer education" OR "peer-led programs"), yielding 4.245  articles, which were then filtered down to 7 relevant articles after applying a 10-year time frame. Results: Several factors influence the promotion of menstrual health through nutrition education and peer-based interventions for adolescent girls. These include social support from peers, skills-based education, family involvement (especially mothers), sufficient nutrition literacy, psychosocial factors such as self-confidence and self-control, the role of schools as a health education platform, and the theoretical models used in the program, such as the Theory of Planned Behavior. Conclusion: Peer-led and skills-based education improves health outcomes for adolescent girls. Combining peer support, family involvement, and active learning enhances program success. Schools and communities should adopt these models to address adolescent health issues effectively.

Abstract

Background Low birth weight (LBW) children are at risk of developmental delay, including impaired motor skills, cognitive function, and stress regulation. Brain Gym® activities have been shown to improve motor coordination, attention span, and fine motor skills in preschool and primary school-aged children. Evidence for the use of Brain Gym® is limited for infants and toddlers with medical vulnerabilities such as low birth weight (LBW), who are at increased risk of developmental delay and heightened stress sensitivity. Objective To evaluate the impact of Brain Gym® exercises on cognitive function, motor skills (fine and gross motor), and cortisol levels in children aged 12–23 months with a history of LBW compared to a control group. Methods  A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in Sragen, Indonesia, involving 80 low birth weight (LBW) children aged 12 to 23 months. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups: an experimental group receiving Brain Gym® intervention and a control group.The experimental group received Brain Gym® exercises combined with routine baby massage, while the control group received only baby massage. Cognitive and motor development were assessed using the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST), while stress biomarkers were measured through salivary cortisol levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Assessments were conducted at baseline (pre-intervention) and after the 8-week intervention period. The evaluators who administered the DDST and laboratory staff analyzing cortisol were blinded to group allocation. Results The primary outcomes of this study were motor skills, cortisol levels, and cognitive function. At baseline, there were no significant differences between the Brain Gym® group and the control group in fine motor, gross motor, or cognitive function scores, as assessed by the DDST. After the intervention, between-group comparisons revealed no statistically significant differences in gross motor, fine motor, cortisol, or cognitive function outcomes. Within-group analysis showed that gross motor scores in the Brain Gym® group significantly increased after the intervention (P = 0.038), while fine motor scores demonstrated a non-significant trend toward improvement (P = 0.110). Cortisol levels in the Brain Gym® group significantly decreased (P = 0.009), whereas the control group exhibited no significant changes in gross motor (P = 0.548), fine motor, or cortisol levels (P = 0.118). Cognitive function scores remained statistically unchanged in both groups. Conclusion Our findings suggest that Brain Gym® exercises can improve gross motor function and reduce stress in LBW children. These findings highlight the potential of early interventions in enhancing development, but should be interpreted cautiously due to the modest sample size and short intervention period. Future studies should focus on the long-term effects and the mechanisms underlying these improvements.
