Abstract

Heavy work is one of the factors that can influence farmer stress. In addition, the high demand for labor can increase psychosocial disorders and psychological stress among farmers. This research aims to determine the management of psychosocial problems among Indonesian farmers. This research uses a literature review method which examines several academic articles related to the author's research. The data was obtained from the Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct databases, and the publication years were 2020 to 2024. A systematic approach in the form of the PRISMA framework was used in selecting this literature review. In the English language literature search, the keywords "psychosocial" and "stress" and "farmer" were used. Then 10 relevant journals were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Agricultural nurses can educate farmers about psychosocial problems to reduce the psychosocial problems that occur. Farmers' psychosocial problems resulting from stress, depression, severe fatigue, and work exhaustion can be overcome not only with family social support but also with various types of self-management, such as focusing on problem-solving and controlling emotions.

Abstract

Snakebite is a global emergency that can result in death, especially among farmers. Knowledge of snakebite management for farmers can improve first aid skills and abilities. This study aims to analyze the importance of snakebite management on farmer safety. The method used in this research is a literature study by finding articles in 3 databases: Google Scholar (3,000 articles), Pubmed (4 articles), and ScienceDirect (196 articles). After that, the journals were sorted again with more specific keywords and years that met the criteria (2019-2024). The search keywords use two languages: the English keywords use "Knowledge" AND "Snakebite" AND "Management" AND "Farmers," and the Indonesian keywords use "Pengetahuan" AND "Manajemen" AND "Gigitan Ular" AND "Petani," then reviewed by reading the abstracts until finally reviewed by reading the abstract until finally a total of 10 titles were obtained. Based on these 10 articles, this study found that snakebite management education has an important effect on farmer safety. Snakebite first aid education and training have effectively improved farmers' knowledge and skills in handling snakebite cases. Approaches such as self-instructional modules, training workshops, and lectures have proven effective. Lack of first aid skills in snakebite incidents among farmers can be fatal. Therefore, nurses and health workers should educate farmers to reduce adverse outcomes and promote safer farming practices.

Abstract

Agricultural workers are particularly susceptible to respiratory ailments. This results from exposure to various harmful substances in the workplace, including dust, insecticides, and smoking. Farmers may have acute respiratory illnesses, such as upper respiratory tract infections, or chronic respiratory conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This article aims to examine the literature about respiratory problems encountered by farmers. The databases utilized are Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and Science Direct. The specified English keywords are "Dust exposure" AND "Farmer" OR "Rice mill" AND "Lung function". Meanwhile, Indonesian keywords employ the terms "Exposure to dust" AND "Farmers" OR "Rice mill" AND "Lung function". The research findings indicate that respiratory illnesses pose a significant health issue for farmers. To prevent respiratory problems in farmers, minimizing their exposure to harmful substances in their work environment is necessary. The way to overcome this is by using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensuring adequate ventilation in rice mills, and carrying out regular health checks to detect and treat respiratory problems early.

Abstract

Workers in the agro-industrial sector, such as farmers, are very vulnerable to Low Back Pain, because several risk factors cause low back pain in farmers, such as their working position not being in an ergonomic position and being in an extended position at a particular time without any movement or shift in position. Low Back Pain can be very dangerous if not treated immediately, as it can cause adverse effects for the sufferer. One of the methods that can be used in overcoming Low Back Pain in farmers is Spinal Manipulation therapy. This therapy focuses on improving the spine's position and restoring its function to what it was before. This study aimed to determine whether Spinal Manipulation Therapy can reduce the incidence of LBP in farmers in the Agroindustry area. The method used was a literature review using journals as reference sources accessed from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect with keywords "Spinal Manipulation Therapy" AND "Low Back Pain" AND "Agroindustrial Sector". The results indicate that providing Spinal Manipulation therapy to farmers suffering from LBP is effective because the therapy can improve posture, reduce back pain, and improve physical mobility. Therefore, Spinal Manipulative Therapy is one of the most effective therapies for treating low back pain in farmers because it can improve their quality of life.

Abstract

Agricultural workers face complex work pressures such as social isolation, weather dependency, and limited access to health services, which impact their mental health. Agronursing is emerging as a nursing approach that is responsive to the specific needs of agrarian communities in a holistic and culturally based manner. This article explores the role of agronursing in supporting farmworkers' mental health through contextualized and sustainable interventions. This literature review employed a systematic search in ScienceDirect, PubMed, and MDPI databases for articles published between 2020 and 2025. From 4,371 identified articles, a multi-stage screening and eligibility process was conducted, resulting in 10 articles that met all inclusion criteria for final analysis. Burnout and mental health problems are prevalent among agricultural workers due to various internal and external stressors. Various approaches, such as increasing psychological and social capital, self-coping strategies, and multimodal interventions, have proven effective in maintaining farmers' mental well-being. An agronursing perspective and community support are important in sustainably building farmers' psychological resilience. Farmers' mental health is adversely affected by economic stress, overwork, and social isolation, with stigma and mistrust hindering access to support. Effective interventions must be context-sensitive and involve farmers to ensure psychological impact and community acceptance.

Abstract

Pesticide exposure is one of the most significant risks farmers faces, especially regarding respiratory health. Lack of understanding about using personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work procedures makes farmers vulnerable to respiratory problems. This study aims to identify the impact of pesticide exposure on farmers' respiratory health from an agronursing perspective. This research is a literature review study that uses a quantitative descriptive approach. The sample was taken from 10 articles from PubMed, Science Direct, and Semantic Scholar, which were considered most relevant. The study showed pesticide exposure is significantly associated with increased respiratory disorders such as asthma, chronic cough, and decreased lung function. Risk factors include frequency of spraying, type of pesticide, and lack of PPE use. The agronursing approach is important in the prevention and management of health impacts due to pesticides. The role of nurses as educators, behavior change facilitators, and intervention developers is essential to increase farmers' awareness and health protection.

Abstract

The use of pesticides in agriculture increases crop yields, but poses health risks to farmers, especially without PPE. Global data shows a high rate of pesticide poisoning, especially in developing countries. In Indonesia, farmers' awareness and compliance with the use of PPE are still low due to factors related to education, training, and risk perception. This study aims to analyze the level of awareness among farmers regarding the use of PPE and the factors that influence their occupational safety practices when using pesticides. This study employed a literature review method, searching articles from three electronic databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink. The selection of articles was carried out in stages based on the keywords used "farmers" OR "agricultural workers" AND "awareness" OR "knowledge" OR "perception" AND "personal protective equipment" OR "PPE" AND "use" OR "utilization" OR "practice" AND "analysis" OR "study" OR "assessment", until 12 primary articles were analyzed in depth. The results show that the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) remains relatively low and inconsistent, despite most individuals having received training and sufficient knowledge. There is a gap between knowledge and practice of PPE use among tobacco farmers, which is influenced by various social and structural factors. Educational interventions based on behavioral models, cross-sectoral involvement, and the provision of adequate PPE are essential to improve farmers' work safety sustainably.

Abstract

Pesticide exposure among farmers poses significant health risks globally; however, comprehensive recent evidence on the role of nursing in mitigating these hazards remains underexplored. This systematic review aims to synthesize empirical findings from 2024 to 2025 on the health impacts of pesticide exposure in farming populations and discusses implications for agronursing practice. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across Scopus, PubMed, and ProQuest using the keywords "pesticide," "farmer," and "nursing." From an initial pool of 2,757 records, 10 original research articles published between 2024 and 2025 met the inclusion criteria: full-text, English-language, open-access, peer-reviewed research articles with ethical clearance, an active DOI, and no study design restrictions beyond excluding non-original works. The 10 included studies were conducted in Thailand, Spain, Greece, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Türkiye, and India. These studies revealed consistent associations between pesticide exposure and adverse health outcomes, including sleep disorders, depression, suicide attempts, oxidative stress, DNA damage, elevated inflammatory markers, and increased stroke risk biomarkers. Behavioral assessments indicated widespread deficiencies in safe pesticide handling and low risk perception. Importantly, nurse-led interventions demonstrated effectiveness in improving occupational health service delivery and farmer knowledge. Pesticide exposure continues to pose a risk to farmers' health across diverse global settings. Agronursing emerges as a vital interdisciplinary approach to address this challenge through education, early detection, advocacy, and community-based prevention. Integrating agronursing competencies into primary healthcare and nursing curricula is crucial for protecting agricultural workers and promoting sustainable rural health.

Abstract

Work stress among farmers remains an overlooked occupational health issue in Indonesia despite high vulnerability to economic and environmental pressures. This study aimed to map farmers’ stress levels and identify demographic factors influencing stress. A quantitative descriptive design was used with 140 farmers selected through purposive sampling in Jember Regency. Stress was measured using the DASS-42 stress subscale, and data were analysed descriptively and through multiple linear regression. Results showed that 62.9% of farmers experienced mild stress, 30.7% moderate stress, and 6.4% severe stress. Regression analysis demonstrated that gender (p=0.012), educational attainment (p=0.005), family role (p=0.030), number of family members (p=0.025), land size (p=0.008), and monthly income (p=0.001) significantly influenced stress levels. Female farmers, individuals with low education, heads of households, farmers with more than four family members, land ≤ 0.65 ha, and income < Rp 1,916,983 had markedly higher stress scores.  The study concludes that farmer stress is shaped by socioeconomic vulnerability and limited resources. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions, including capacity-building programs, improved access to agricultural support, and policies that enhance economic stability to reduce work-related stress among Indonesian farmers
