Abstract

This research uses the Tessmer (1995) development model which aims to describe the process of developing questions equivalent to AKM numeracy in the junior high school algebra domain and produce valid and reliable questions. The research instruments used include question validation sheets and student evaluation sheets. At the preliminary stage, the researcher reviewed the literature, contacted schools, determined the domain to be developed, determined the question items, and designed the questions. At stage self evaluation, The questions designed are evaluated by peers and produce results prototype 1. At the level of expert review, The assessment of 3 experts showed that the 16 questions developed were valid in terms of material, construction and language aspects. At stage one-to-one, prototype 1 tested on 3 students with moderate mathematical abilities to review the language of each question. At the small group stage, Prototype 2 tested on 6 students to review the duration of the work and found that the work duration was 80 minutes. At stage field test, prototype 3 tested on 30 students to collect data to test the validity and reliability of the question items. This research resulted in 14 valid and reliable items that can be used to assess student competencies and as practice questions for facing numeracy assessments in the AKM.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine how the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model can be effectively applied to foster critical thinking abilities in junior secondary students, particularly within the domain of algebra. This study employed a qualitative approach with a teaching experiment design conducted in Grade VII A (29 students) at SMP PGRI II Wajak over four sessions. Data were collected through observation, pretest-posttest, student worksheets (LKPD), and questionnaires about learning motivation. According to Facione, the tool used to evaluate critical thinking skills includes six indicators: The study’s findings indicate notable progress in students’ critical thinking skills across six core dimensions: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference (conclusion), explanation, and self regulation evident both in their problem-solving performance and throughout the learning process. Both the N-Gain results, which were categorized as high (62.07%) and medium (37.93%), and the observation results, which demonstrated the domination of the good to very good category during the third meeting, demonstrate this growth. These results suggest that using the PBL paradigm can enhance students' quantitative critical thinking abilities and possibly boost their enthusiasm to learn. This study suggests using PBL as an alternative learning approach focused on fostering the growth of higher order thinking abilities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the critical thinking process of students with Field-Independent (FI) and Field-Dependent (FD) cognitive styles when they solved the Two-Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV) problem, which is based on the Polya step and the Facione critical thinking indicator. This research is qualitative descriptive. The instruments in this study are the GEFT Test, the SPLDV problem-solving test and the interview guidelines are the research instruments. The results of the study show that FI students are able to understand and analyze data independently and systematically, use logical inference to choose a solution strategy, and provide a thorough procedural explanation. They are also capable of self-verification, which shows strong self-control In contrast, FD students face difficulties in selecting important information, making preparations that rely on the teacher's example, and performing inconsistent completion steps. Since the evaluation stage of FD students still depends on external justification, they also show a lack of self-regulation. These results confirm that cognitive style affects the activation of critical thinking indicators at each stage of problem-solving. In addition, cognitive style also provides implications for the importance of adaptive learning based on students' cognitive characteristics.
