Abstract

Siak River is the most polluted river in Riau, however, many types of fish, including Pangasius polyuranodon living in that river. As the water is polluted the health of the fish in general, including its gill structure might be harmed. A study aims to understand the histological structure of the gill of fish from upstream and downstream of the Siak River has been conducted in May 2015. Abnormality in the gill was noted and the abnormality level was identified using a Histopathological Alteration Index (HAI). Results shown that the types of abnormality present were hyperplasia, hypertrophy, atrophy and deformated lamella. The HAI level was 2.67-2.75, indicates that the gill of the P. polyuranodon from the Siak River was normal.Keyword: Siak River, Histopathological Alteration Index , gill structure, Pangasius polyuranodon

Abstract

Abstract Osteochilus hasselti is found in the Tarai River that has been contaminated with organic pollution and it may affects the presence of food resources for the fish and as a consequence affects its stomach content. A study aims to understand the stomach content of O. hasselti has been conducted from November 2017 to January 2018. The fish was sampled 3 times, once/month.   There were 78 fishes captured. Stomach content were analyzed as a basis for calculating the Preponderence Index (IP). The analysis was conducted using a volumetric method. Results shown that the main food of the fish is Bacillariophyceae (IP 39.64%) and Chlorophyceae (IP 39.63%) . The small fishes (90-104 mm) consume phytoplankton, while the big fish (more than 130 mm) consume phytoplankton and zooplankton. The male and female’s stomach content was almost the same. Fish with relatively low maturity level eats mainly on phytoplankton, while mature fish consume phytoplankton and zooplankton.  Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that the food of    O. hasselti was various, and it is related to body size and gonad maturity level. Keywords: Fish feeding habit, Fish food habit, Plankton, Indeks of Preponderance

Abstract

AbstractGrowth of fish is affected by environmental conditions. As growth pattern is reflected on the growth ring pattern in the otolith, growth pattern variations caused by environmental condition will also be reflected in the growth ring pattern in the otolith. Mudskipper was present in 2 different areas namely in the mangrove ecosystem and around the harbor area.  To understand the growth ring pattern of the fish from those areas, a study has been conducted on August to October 2018.  Fifty seven fishes were captured, 32 fishes (15 males and 17 females, 135-215 mm of TL, 16-185 g of BT) from the mangrove and 25 fishes (9 males and 6 females, 150-230 mm of TL, 35-141 g of BT) from the harbor. The otolith was removed, processed, and growth ring pattern was checked using a binocular microscope. Results shown that dark growth ring pattern in the fish from the harbor and mangrove was different. The mangrove fishes has 1-4 dark growth ring, while the harbor fishes have 2-9 dark growth ring . The quantity of dark ring in otolith shown that the fish from the mangrove grew better than the fishes from the harbor. Keywords :environmental conditions, otolith ring, amphibious fish, growth pattern.
