Abstract

In industrialization era, human activities have a global impact on the environment. Natural phenomena begin to occur, one of which is climate change. Rising sea-levels, warming earth temperatures, and air pollution are the actual impacts of climate change. The study aimed to explain how climate change is portrayed in An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power Film. In addition, this study also tried to investigate the adaptations carried out by Al Gore as the main character in responding to climate change. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The study used ecocriticism theory (By Garrard, 2004) to explain the representation of climate change and the adaptation of the main character to climate change. Data obtained from An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power Film by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk was released in 2017. The results of the data analysis showed the representation of climate change in the film through issues covering three aspects, apocalypse, pollution, and earth. These three aspects significantly impact human life, particularly health, economy, and environment. In addition, adaptations made by the main character in responding to climate change can be analyzed through environmentalism and deep ecology. The main character responded to environmentalism by building self-awareness of environmental concerns, and he created a training program to build awareness of human beings. Meanwhile, in deep ecology, he suggested switching to renewable energy to meet human energy needs to be more environmentally friendly and reduce the effects of greenhouse gases and pollution.

Abstract

This research focused on the depression experienced by Helen Knightly as the main character in Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon novel, which was published in 2007. Helen Knightly, the main character, is a nude model in an art department school who is familiar with mental health problems. The various incidents in her life made Helen traumatized and depressed, then she took unexpected actions. Therefore, this research aims to determine Helen's depression by using the depression theory of Aaron T. Beck to examine the kinds of depression in Helen. Furthermore, the researcher used a qualitative research method in this research. The data are generated from sentences, paragraphs, and dialogues that showed Helen's depression in the novel. Theoretically, there are seven in three mechanisms of the depression types, they are negative view about the world, negative view about the future, negative self-schemas, arbitrary inference, selective abstraction, personalization, and dichotomous thinking. The findings show that the depression was represented through characterization, namely: character as seen by another, speech, reactions, and thoughts. From the findings, it can be concluded that Helen's character is depressed, so she took unexpected actions such as killing her mother and dumping the body in a deep freeze, hiding, and having sex with her best friend's son, which then made Helen on the police wanted list. By looking at the case, the theory of depression is presented to understand the confusing behavior of the characters, as the term is an effort to raise the readers' awareness about depression.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Mamanda Kutai (Ladon) music is a crucial aspect of Mamanda Kutai's performance. This is because, without the music, Mamanda Kutai is just an ordinary drama. Mamanda is a show originating from South Kalimantan. Mamanda arrived in East Kalimantan because Kutai was one of the areas controlled by the Banjarmasin Sultanate. The heyday of Mamanda Kutai occurred when this art was performed regularly by Kutainese society (not only in the Kutai Kartanegara Ing Maradipura Sultanate as the Karesmenan Aji). In its heyday, every village in Kutai Kartanegara had Mamanda Kutai group. Nowadays, there is only one group left, namely Mamanda Panji Berseri. This study aims to find out how to preserve Mamanda Kutai music by the Mamanda performer and the government. This study used a descriptive analysis method by collecting several sources of text and interview. The sustainability of Mamanda Kutai has degenerated in terms of the existing group’s quantity. This is due to the lack of preservation of the Mamanda Kutai musical ecosystem. Some of the challenges faced by Mamanda Kutai are (1) the lack of teachers with cultural literacy; (2) the lack of economic welfare of the Kutai Mamanda performer; (3) the absence of the documentation of this art; and (4) the lack of broadcasting of Mamanda Kutai's performances.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the personality of the main character, Joe Goldberg, in Caroline Kepnes’ You and Hidden Bodies novels. Joe’s personality was analyzed by applying Sigmund Freud’s psychological approach that took a focus on the id, ego, and superego of humans. Character and characterization theory by Kelly Griffith was added in identifying Joe to get a deeper and better grasp of what kind of character he is. As a result of the analysis of the research, it showed that Joe’s id was described through the impulsiveness in his actions, his ego was portrayed through maintaining to have a positive self-image in front of a woman he likes while his superego was depicted through his awareness of having a good moral by doing righteous deeds. However, Joe’s actions and behaviors tend to lean more towards his id, which is the instinct and basic urges of humans to bring pleasures and avoid any painful feelings to protect the individual. Overall, Joe’s id, ego, and superego were depicted through his actions and thoughts throughout the story.
