Abstract

This research focuses on an anti-whitewashing movement in films and how it connects with the shifting portrayals and stereotypes of Asians in films. The period addressed in this study is from 1995 to 2021. The researcher begins by recognizing whitewashing issues and concerns in casting Asian actors and identifying stereotypical images of Asians portrayed in two films: the original version of Mortal Kombat, which was released in 1995, and the contemporary remake of the film, which was released in 2021. This research used content analysis to compare the portrayals and stereotypes of Asians in both films. The data indicate that racist images of Asians seen in Mortal Combat 1995 have been removed in Mortal Combat 2021.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the formation of homosexual identity in an individual, the types of victimization and abuse towards queer people, as well as the effects of victimization. The researcher used Foucault’s queer theory as a main theory for this study. The data used in this research were paragraphs, sentences, dialogues and narrations. The novel entitled More Happy Than Not, which was written by Adam Silvera in 2015, was used as the source of data for this research. The results from this study showed that the character Aaron Soto went through a rather difficult progress of homosexual identity formation, which he went back and forth between identity confusion and identity assumption phases. Aaron experienced several kinds of victimization, which include physical abuse, verbal abuse, and victimization in family settings. The abuse caused Aaron to experience physical injury, self blame, as well as feelings of internalized homophobia. The homosexual identity formation, victimization and the effects of victimization are related in a sense that they work like a cycle, and the three of them worked as a cause and effect.

Abstract

This paper discussed the deconstruction of the fixed meaning of the main characters in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner novel named Amir and Hassan. The purposes of this thesis are to determine how the fixed meaning of Amir and Hassan’s characters is described in the novel and to comprehend how Derrida’s deconstruction theory may help us to find a new meaning of Amir and Hassan’s characters. Further, the theories that are used in this analysis are the theories of deconstruction from Jacques Derrida and Boggs and Petrie’s theory of characterization. The results of this thesis showed that there are three characteristics of each character that has the opposite meaning. Firstly, Amir’s character was described as someone who has the character of selfish, superior, and coward. But after analyzing deeply, Amir’s character also has the opposite side of his characters, they are: selfless, inferior, and also brave character. Meanwhile, Hassan was described as an uneducated, brave, and good character, but he also has the opposite character. The new meaning of Hassan was described as educated, coward, and bad character.
