Abstract

This study explores the mathematical literacy challenges faced by students at SMK Negeri 2 Bawang, Banjarnegara Regency, in learning exponential concepts, which are analyzed through the lens of the Independent Regular Learning (SRL) level. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study involved three student subjects representing high, medium, and low SRL categories. Data was collected through mathematical literacy tests, SRL questionnaires, and interviews. The research findings indicate that variations in SRL levels significantly influence the types of difficulties students experience. Students with low SRL face various challenges, including understanding the context of the problem, building mathematical models, and interpreting results. Students with moderate SRL demonstrate the ability to understand problems but have difficulty selecting appropriate problem-solving strategies and accurately representing contextual situations in mathematical form. Meanwhile, students with high SRL exhibit systematic and reflective thinking but encounter obstacles connecting mathematical outcomes to real-life contexts. These findings underscore the role of SRL in shaping students' mathematical literacy challenges. Further research is recommended to investigate additional internal factors that influence mathematical literacy in order to develop more adaptive and targeted teaching strategies

Abstract

This study explores the challenges faced by vocational students in solving contextual problems in statistics using the TEFA (Teaching Factory) approach, aimed at enhancing their analytical and problem-solving skills—competencies that are highly valued in the industrial world. The purpose of this research is to analyze the difficulties students encounter when solving TEFA-based contextual problems in statistical topics. The subjects of this study were 38 tenth-grade students from class X TO 9 at SMK Kesatrian Purwokerto, selected based on their even semester daily test scores. The students were categorized into three groups: high (HC), medium (MC), and low (LC), based on the class average and standard deviation. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The findings revealed that students in the high category were generally able to understand statistical concepts and accurately calculate the mean, median, and mode. However, some students in this group did not sort the data from smallest to largest when calculating the median. Students in the medium category had difficulty recalling how to compute the mean, often resulting in incorrect answers; although the mode was correct, the median was not. Meanwhile, students in the low category acknowledged that they lacked understanding of how to calculate the mean, median, and mode.

Abstract

Banyumas and Pekalongan batik are local cultural heritages of Central Java that contain philosophical values, regional identity, and geometric patterns. Although batik has been widely known as a uniform, its use as a medium for learning mathematics, especially transformation geometry, is still limited. This study aims to examine the relationship between Banyumas and Pekalongan batik motifs with the concept of transformation geometry and the cultural values contained. A qualitative approach with ethnographic methods was used through observation, documentation, in-depth interviews, and field notes. The subjects of the study included cultural figures, batik craftsmen, and tour guides at the Anto Jamil Batik Center (Banyumas) and the Pekalongan Batik Museum. The study focused on the Jahe Srimpang and Babon Angrem motifs (Banyumas), as well as Jlamprang Gunungan and Jlamprang Seamless (Pekalongan). The results showed that these motifs contain elements of geometric transformation such as translation, rotation, symmetry, reflection, and dilation. This study recommends the use of batik as a source of mathematics learning based on local wisdom.

Abstract

The ability to solve mathematical problems is one of the main competencies that need to be mastered in mathematics learning. However, a number of studies reveal that students still experience obstacles in solving math problems, especially on the topic of circles. The purpose of this study is to explore the various causes of difficulties of grade VIII students in solving mathematical problems related to circle material and offer alternative solutions that can be used in the learning process. This research was conducted with a descriptive qualitative approach through a case study of several junior high school students in grade VIII. The findings of this study show that the main obstacles for students lie in the lack of understanding of the basic concept of circles, errors in the use of formulas, and limitations in designing problem-solving steps. Therefore, problem-based learning strategies and contextual learning approaches are recommended to be implemented to support improved student understanding.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy is a crucial aspect of mathematics learning, yet it remains a significant challenge among students. While previous research has largely emphasized instructional approaches to enhance mathematical literacy, there is a lack of focus on the underlying difficulties faced by students, particularly in relation to self-regulated learning (SRL). This study aims to explore the problems in mathematical literacy encountered by vocational high school students at SMK Negeri 2 Bawang, Banjarnegara Regency, on exponential material, analyzed through their SRL levels. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study involved three student subjects representing high, medium, and low SRL categories. Data collection was conducted using a mathematical literacy test, an SRL questionnaire, and interviews. The results indicate that variations in SRL levels significantly influence the types of difficulties students experience. Students with low SRL face extensive challenges, including understanding problem contexts, constructing mathematical models, and interpreting results. Those with medium SRL can comprehend the problems but struggle with selecting appropriate solution strategies and accurately representing contextual situations in mathematical forms. Meanwhile, students with high SRL exhibit systematic and reflective thinking yet encounter obstacles in connecting mathematical results to real-life contexts. These findings underscore the role of SRL in shaping students' mathematical literacy challenges. Further research is recommended to investigate additional internal factors affecting mathematical literacy to develop more adaptive and targeted instructional strategies.

Abstract

Fuzzy thinking means the thinking process with confusion between understanding and not understanding. This research was conducted to find out the students' experiences of fuzzy thinking in mathematics communication in SMP Negeri 2 Banyumas. This was a descriptive qualitative research and the subjects were taken from the students of class 8 C using snowball technique and T.O.L (Think Out Loud) that fulfilled the criteria of fuzzy thinking either the correct one or the incorrect one. From the results, there were 2 students with correct fuzzy thinking and 4 students with incorrect fuzzy thinking. The data were collected using tests, interviews, and documentation then analyzed using Miles and Huberman model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that: 1) the thinking process of the respondents with incorrect fuzzy thinking experienced a change. At first they were able to think correctly, but after the reflection, they were not able to explain correctly, so the answers did not reflect their understanding absolutely; 2)the thinking process of the respondents with correct fuzzy thinking experienced a change. At first they were not able to do the test correctly, but after the reflection, they were able to finish it correctly.

Abstract

Abstract

Gumelem batik is batik made by the people of Gumelem Village, Susukan District, Banjarnegara Regency, One of the typical Gumelem batik producers who still maintains the traditional method making batik is the “Wardah” batik house owned by Mr. Budi Triono. The typical motifs of this batik are the sekar jagad motif, the udan liris motif, the arjuna temple motif, and the dawet ayu banjarnegara motif. Batik cloth culture has been recognized as an intangible world heritage, but its benefits are limited to the cloth. It is still rare for people to use batik culture as a mathematics learning medium. Mathematics that combines cultural concepts with mathematical elements is called ethnomathematics. In this research, typical Gumelem batik motifs will be discussed mathematically using the concept of geometric transformation. The method used descriptive-qualitative, with an ethnographic approach. The result of the research is that, for several typical Gumelem motifs analyzed, it turns out that all of three motifs contain mathematical elements, namely geometric transformation. This research is aimed at developing mathematics teaching materials based on the culture of Gumelem village. Keywords: Ethnomathematics, Batik Gumelem, Geometric Transformation

Abstract

Culture and mathematics are two things that are interrelated, but most people do not realize that they have linked mathematics to their habits and culture. Banyumas is an area in Central Java that has many cultures, and one of these cultures is Banyumasan batik. Banyumasan batik is very famous in Banyumas because it is used by local people as traditional clothing and is even worn by employees on certain days. However, the use of Banyumasan batik is limited to clothing and has not been used in learning, even though the learning material could be more interesting. The aim of this research is to reveal mathematical elements, especially geometric transformations in Banyumasan batik. An ethnographic approach was used in this research, and data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, documents, and ethnographic notes. Data analysis is based on the meaning and translation of the phenomena found, as well as the informants' understanding of these phenomena and their original language, which is combined verbally with the researcher's language after in-depth understanding through group discussions. The research results show that Banyumasan batik contains geometric transformation elements that can be used in mathematics learning. Keywords: Banyumasan Batik, Culture, Geometry Transformation, Math
