Abstract

This study aims to develop an assessment rubric and produce a metacognitive skill model through the Blended Learning Management System (BLEMS) in project-based learning in vocational education. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) model of Borg and Gall (1983). The research subjects consisted of two experts (validity), ten students (small group), and 35 students (expanded) from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia. Data were collected using questionnaires and tests: developed assessment instruments and rubrics with three main aspects, planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Conducted assessment tests through self, peer, and teacher assessments. Then analyzed the results of the Assessments with descriptive statistics. The results showed that the Rubric and metacognitive assessment model through BLEMS for vocational education met the validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The integration of metacognitive skill elements: planning, monitoring, and evaluation with self-assessment, peer assessment, and teacher assessment can be an assessment method to measure students' metacognitive thinking skills in project-based learning in vocational education.

Abstract

Background/Context: Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education has transformed students’ learning practices through instant access to explanations, feedback, and academic support. However, its influence on learning motivation remains contradictory. While AI may enhance autonomy and competence, excessive reliance on it may reduce cognitive engagement and self-regulation. Therefore, the use of AI needs to be examined from the perspective of students’ psychological needs. Objective/Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of autonomy, learning competence, AI usage competence, and relatedness on students’ learning motivation in AI-assisted learning environments based on Self-Determination Theory. Method: This study employed a quantitative correlational design using PLS-SEM. Data were collected from 248 students of the Informatics and Computer Engineering Education Programme at Universitas Negeri Makassar through a validated questionnaire. Results: The findings revealed that autonomy, learning competence, and relatedness had positive and significant effects on learning motivation, with relatedness emerging as the strongest predictor. In contrast, AI usage competence did not significantly affect learning motivation, indicating that technical proficiency in operating AI tools alone is insufficient to foster meaningful academic engagement. The structural model explained 73% of the variance in learning motivation, demonstrating strong predictive power. Conclusion: This study confirms that students’ motivation in AI-assisted learning is influenced more by the fulfilment of psychological needs than by technological capability alone. The findings extend the application of Self-Determination Theory in the context of generative AI by distinguishing between academic competence and AI usage competence. Therefore, AI integration should emphasise human-centred pedagogical strategies that strengthen autonomy, competence, and social connectedness in order to foster meaningful and sustainable learning motivation

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to develop a Web-Based Work-Based Learning Management System with an Early Monitoring System and Learning Analytics at SMKN 5 Makassar to address the issues surrounding the management of work-based learning, which is still conducted manually, leading to delays in data processing, difficulties in monitoring student activities, and limitations in real-time competency evaluation. Methods – This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the Prototype development model, consisting of requirements analysis, system design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. The developed system was evaluated based on the ISO/IEC 25010 software quality standard, including functional suitability, usability, performance efficiency, reliability, security, maintainability, compatibility, and portability. Findings – The research results show that the developed system successfully integrates vocational training administration, student placement, attendance monitoring, daily journals, the Early Monitoring System, and Learning Analytics into a single web-based platform. The results of the software quality evaluation show that the system achieved a Functional Suitability score of 100%, a Usability score of 92.18%, a Performance Efficiency score with a GTMetrix Grade of B, a Performance Score of 72%, a Structure Score of 98%, and a page load time of 2.6 seconds. Reliability testing using Apache JMeter showed an error rate of 0%, while security testing using Acunetix revealed no security vulnerabilities, with the following categories: High = 0, Medium = 0, Low = 0, and Informational = 0. Research Implications – This study is limited to internship management activities at SMKN 5 Makassar and has not yet been integrated with other academic information systems. Future studies may expand the implementation scope and integrate advanced analytics features. Originality – The novelty of this research lies in the integration of an Early Warning System and Learning Analytics into a single web-based vocational training management platform that enables real-time detection of student risks based on attendance data and the consistency of daily journals, and supports data-driven monitoring and decision-making by supervising teachers.
