Abstract

Students' mastery of geometry topics affects their ability to understand other mathematical topics. In addition, students are required to have higher-order thinking skills. Previous research shows that ICT media played an important role in improving students’ higher-order thinking skills. This study was carried out to produce a cuboid volume learning trajectory in ICT-assisted learning that can support students' higher-order thinking skills. This research employed validation design which consisted of three main stages, namely preliminary, experiment, and retrospective analysis. It was held during two main cycles. Sixty-four students of the eighth-grade in Palembang, Ogan Ilir, Manado, and West Papua were involved as research subjects. Data were collected through validation sheets, observations, interviews, and documents in the form of student worksheets. Then, the data were analyzed qualitatively and described narratively. The learning design developed was able to help students use higher-order thinking skills where students analyzed, evaluated, and used their creativity in answering the problems given. The results of this study can inform the policy making for teachers in designing mathematics learning and for lecturers to carry out mentoring for teachers in designing mathematics learning based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) and ICT media.

Abstract

This study aims to produce valid and practical PISA-based numerical problems in the context of the pandemic period and to find out the role of the questions in the form of potential effects on the mathematical literacy skills of secondary school students. This research uses developmental research design, which has 2 stages, namely preliminary and formative evaluation (self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one and small group validation, and field test). The participants in this study were students in Grade 8 who were under the age of 15 and different levels of skills. Data analysis was done descriptively by conducting observations, tests, interviews, and document analysis. The research was conducted face-to-face and via Zoom and WhatsApp Group (WAG) to produce valid and practical PISA-like arithmetic questions. Based on the students' responses, it can be stated that the questions presented are in the practical category because they can be completed quickly by students, they can be understood well by students, and they have the potential effect on students' mathematical literacy skills. In addition, there is a diversity of answers between one student and another according to the level of difficulty that is appropriate for Grade 8 students. This proves that a PISA-like numeration problem in the context of the religious day during a pandemic can help improve students' mathematical literacy.DOI : https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.2.16010.157-170

Abstract

This study purposes to describe the strategies used by students in solving PISA type problems seen from the strategy of problem solving according to Polya. The research methodology is qualitative type descriptive study. Research subjects were 6 high school students in Palembang who had different levels of mathematical ability. Data was gathered using observation, interviews, and student answer sheets on the type of PISA questions given. The results showed that the dominant strategy used by students in solving PISA type problems included making pictures when they solve problem related to geometry; looking for possible answers systematically when they try to solve problem within numeric; writing information stated and the question when the problem is in the form of storytelling; and using trial and error when the problem provide answer alternatives. Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies, which play an important role among emerging technologies, have developed rapidly and have begun to be used in various fields in recent years, especially in education. Many factors cause low student learning ability in mathematics lessons. This study aimed to analyze Gen Z students' difficulties in completing trigonometric identity proofs by utilizing ChatGPT Trigonometry-assisted learning. The type of research used was qualitative research. Research data were collected through observation of student activities, direct interviews, and related literature studies. This research was conducted in SMA N 1 Indralaya Selatan. The instruments used were test question sheets and interview guidelines. The results of this study indicate that Generation Z struggles with basic trigonometry concepts, early solution strategies, and proper algebraic manipulation. In addition, reliance on ChatGPT often reduces students' conceptual understanding of the material. This article recommends learning strategies integrating technology and direct teacher assistance to improve learning effectiveness.

Abstract

Abstract: Arithmetic sequence is one of the important materials learned in class X. However, in practice, many students face difficulties in solving problems related to this material. Therefore, this researcher aims to design a learning trajectory or Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) with the approach of Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI), using the context of the Banyuasin Regency traditional house. The method used was design research with the research subjects of 24 students in class X of SMK Manggala Palembang. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews and analysis of student work results on Student Worksheets (LKPD). The results of the study show that the HLT developed is effective in helping students understand the concept of arithmetic sequences in depth, understand patterns, and be able to use the nth term formula in various contextual situations. The implementation of HLT based on local context also helps students to understand the material in a more meaningful and relevant way.

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into mathematics education has demonstrated potential in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding and reasoning abilities, particularly in the context of mathematical proof. Despite these advancements, limited research has investigated the use of AI-based language models such as ChatGPT to support students in learning the logical structure of trigonometric identity proofs, which remain a challenging topic for many learners. To address this gap, this study introduces a novel learning trajectory assisted by ChatGPT aimed at improving students’ abilities in constructing and understanding trigonometric proofs. Employing a validation study design, the research was conducted in three phases: experimental preparation, experimental design, and retrospective analysis. Data were collected through observations, interviews, document analysis, and written tests, and analyzed qualitatively. A total of 50 eleventh-grade students engaged in three learning activities: studying proofs with ChatGPT-generated explanations, interacting directly with ChatGPT to explore proof strategies, and independently solving proof tasks without AI assistance. The findings indicate that ChatGPT effectively supports students in comprehending the logical steps involved in proof construction, enhances their engagement with mathematical reasoning, and promotes deeper understanding of trigonometric identities. These results highlight the potential impact of conversational AI tools in fostering proof-based thinking and enriching mathematics instruction at the secondary education level.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a learning trajectory to stimulate students in solving problems related to the topic of systems of linear equations in two variables (SPLDV), packaged in the form of student activity sheets. This research employs a design research method of the validation study type, consisting of preparing for the experiment, the design experiment, and retrospective analysis. The research was conducted with 37 students from class VIII.1 at SMPN 9 Palembang. Data were collected through documentation, field notes, student activity sheets, and interviews. The collected data were analyzed through data reduction, descriptive presentation, and conclusion drawing. This study resulted in the following learning trajectory: (1) Observing contextual problems related to SPLDV using the GoJek context, specifically the additional bonus for GoCar partners, (2) Students presenting data, including what is known and what is being asked from the problem. (3) Students create possible scenarios for the distances traveled by GoCar partners on weekdays (Monday–Friday) and Saturdays, (4) Students solve the problem, predict alternative solutions, and draw conclusions. The learning trajectory utilizing the GoJek context effectively aids students in understanding and resolving issues related to SPLDV.

Abstract

This study aimed to design a learning activity for the concept of translation using the Realistic Mathematics Education approach, incorporating the Snakes and Ladders game context. This context was chosen for its familiarity with students, making it an effective bridge to understanding the abstract concept of translation. This type of research was design research, specifically a validation studies, comprising the stages of preparation, design experimentation, and retrospective analysis. The research sample involved 16 students from Al Fatah Madrasah Aliyah Palembang, Grade XI, with data collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The results demonstrated that the context of the Snakes and Ladders game effectively facilitated students' understanding of translation through exploration activities, sketch modelling, and mapping on the Cartesian coordinate plane. Students could identify patterns and formulate the translation rule formally with minimal guidance. This study highlights that integrating game-based contexts within the RME approach can create meaningful learning experiences while enhancing students' comprehension of abstract mathematical concepts.
