Abstract

One of the mathematical values is the value of rationalism. This study aims to describe the value of rationalism of junior high school students using digital media worksheets in the context of agrotourism on the surface area of cylinders with research subjects of 3 grade IX students. Data collection was carried out using tests and interviews. The results of this study are that learning using digital technology-based learning media worksheets with geometry content in the context of agrotourism can bring up the value of rationalism. Students can bring up indicators of representing real objects into mathematical objects and writing information that is in accordance with the elements of the cylinder, investigating the appropriate nets in the problem object and writing down the reasons for each step of the solution. The most frequent indicators are representing real objects into mathematical objects, writing down the reasons for each step of the solution and making conclusions. The dominant difficulty is that students make mistakes in drawing conclusions due to errors in investigation activities and understanding mathematical concepts regarding the surface area of spatial shapes.

Abstract

Research on the development of learning design, using the context of Jembatan Musi 6, aims to design and develop HLT in this context. The research employs qualitative research methods, specifically the validation study design type, to validate the learning design. The research subjects consisted of 6 people in the pilot stage and 21 people in the teaching experiment stage at the middle school (MTs) Raudhatul Ulum. The development of HLT used a type of research design known as a validation study, a method appropriate for answering research questions and assisting in the development of research design, which can begin with initial design, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. Therefore, these three learning models can be applied to the topic of arithmetic sequences. This research was conducted using interviews, student questionnaires, and student activity sheets to explain the initial activities that started from a real-life context, namely the Musi 6 Bridge, which leads to the basic concept of arithmetic sequences, particularly determining the n-th term formula. Subsequently, the data collection results were analyzed and explained qualitatively based on data analysis, which showed that students could achieve an understanding of the n-th term formula concept using an alternative learning pathway. In the prediction of local theory, the general thinking of the students is quite accurate. The development of this learning design can be used by teachers in the classroom. Abstract

The nth-term formula is an arithmetic sequence subtopic that contributes significantly to explaining the fundamental concept of an arithmetic sequence. This study aimed to design a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) to find the nth-term formula in an arithmetic sequence through the Pocah Piring game. This study was conducted on eighth-grade students in Palembang, Indonesia. This study used educational design research with a validation study, starting with a preliminary design, design experiments, and retrospective analysis. The learning trajectory in this study begins with rich circumstances that require mathematical reasoning rather than abstraction or exact definitions. Three structured learning activities integrating the Pocah Piring game were applied to help the students explore the concept of an arithmetic sequence. To effectively teach arithmetic sequences, instruction should progress from concrete representations, such as physical manipulatives and visual patterns that help students recognise sequential structures, to more abstract forms, including symbolic expressions and general formulas. The developed LIT accurately predicted students’ thinking throughout the learning process, supporting their progression toward the intended learning objectives. Teachers are encouraged to use the LIT derived from this study to guide instruction and design alternative learning pathways when teaching arithmetic sequences.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to design arithmetic sequence learning based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) with the context of stairs to support students' conceptual understanding. The study employed a design research methodology, structured into three key phases: the preliminary design, the design experiment, and the retrospective analysis. The research was conducted on grade 10 students of MA Al-Ittifaqiah Indralaya using Student Activity Sheets (SAS) designed based on the PMRI approach. The results showed that the context of the stairs was effective in helping students recognize the arithmetic sequence pattern concretely. In the initial activity, students were able to observe and record the pattern of staircase height and understand the fixed difference between stairs. However, most students struggled to construct a general formula in the form of formal symbols, although they managed to calculate patterns for complex cases such as the 901st or 2001st stair logically. This difficulty prompted a revision of the SAS to simplify the symbols and questions and to use concrete terms that were easier for students to understand.Revisions to the lesson design included the removal of confusing symbols, the reduction of repetitive problems, and a stepwise approach to linking concrete patterns with formal symbols. This study concluded that although the PMRI approach was effective in improving students' understanding of the concept of arithmetic sequences, further guidance was needed to improve students' symbolic ability. The findings contributed to the development of learning designs that were contextual, effective, and relevant to students' needs.

Abstract

Students' low understanding of fractions is a major obstacle to achieving basic mathematical competence at the primary school level. To address this issue, innovative, engaging, and easy-to-understand learning media are required to help students grasp fraction concepts more effectively. This study aims to design and evaluate a participatory and interactive game-based learning medium called Box Fraction Fun. The Research and Development (R&D) method was employed, using the ADDIE model. Validation by two subject matter experts and two media experts showed that the medium was considered suitable to highly suitable based on a four-level suitability scale. Practicality was assessed through questionnaires given to three fourth-grade students and one teacher at a public elementary school in Bukit Lama district, Palembang, with results indicating that the medium was “very practical.” The effectiveness of the medium was evaluated using pre-test and post-test scores analyzed with N-gain calculations, which demonstrated significant improvement in students’ understanding of fractions. These findings suggest that Box Fraction Fun is highly valid, practical to use, and effective in supporting students’ learning. Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature on the development of interactive game-based mathematics learning media. Practically, it provides teachers with an innovative and effective tool to enhance students’ understanding of fractions.

Abstract

Students frequently encounter difficulties comprehending and applying the least common multiple (LCM) concepts due to traditional teaching methods lacking engagement and failing to incorporate relevant real-life contexts. Through the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education approach, students are expected to be able to solve the problems given related to the Least Common Multiple (LCM) topic and understand it more deeply. This research is design research with a validation study type that includes three main stages: preparing for the experiment, designing an experiment, and retrospective analysis. A literature review and needs analysis were conducted in the preparation stages to identify problems in learning this LCM topic. The design experiment stage involved using activity sheets, which were implemented into teaching and integrated the LCM concept utilizing the context of a calendar. This stage involved data collection through observation, questionnaire, documentation, and field notes. Retrospective analysis was conducted to evaluate the learning design and make revisions based on the evaluation result and feedback from students, teachers, peers, and lecturers. The result showed that using the context of the activity calendar in learning for LCM topics can enhance students’ understanding of the material and make the learning process more contextual and interesting.
