Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the spatial reasoning constructs employed by pre-service elementary school teachers when solving geometry problems. A total of 36 participants were invited to complete an online test, after which two selected individuals were engaged in solving the problems. Interviews were then conducted to accurately describe the process of solving geometric problems. The results showed the existence of two types of spatial reasoning constructions, namely series and parallel. Both construction types revealed the interrelationship between spatial reasoning and the problem-solving process. This research highlighted the significance of spatial reasoning as an integral component in solving geometric problems, emphasizing the need for further investigation into its distinctiveness. This could be achieved by incorporating advanced geometric concepts and materials into future research. DOI: https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.17.2.20620.209-224

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose –This study aims to explore how a STEM-based learning design integrated with the engineering design process in enhancing elementary school students’ scientific and engineering literacy through the Green Refrigerant Box innovation in elementary schools.Methodology – A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed. The quantitative phase used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design involving 122 fifth-grade students from four elementary schools. The experimental group received STEM-based learning integrated with the engineering design process, while the control group followed regular instruction without STEM-based learning. Data were collected using scientific and engineering literacy tests and analyzed using N-gain and ANCOVA, with effect sizes reported using partial eta squared (η²ₚ). The qualitative phase involved observations, interviews, and documentation, analyzed through thematic analysis to support the quantitative results.Findings – The experimental group showed higher improvement in scientific literacy (N-gain = 0.63, moderate–high) than the control group (0.36, moderate), with a significant effect (F = 58.72, p < 0.001, η²ₚ = 0.33). Engineering literacy also improved more in the experimental group (0.55, moderate) compared to the control group (0.27, low–moderate), with a significant effect (F = 46.35, p < 0.001, η²ₚ = 0.28). Qualitative findings revealed shifts toward mechanistic reasoning, improved data interpretation, and stronger connections between scientific concepts and real-world contexts, along with more systematic design thinkingContribution – This study highlights the complementary relationship between scientific and engineering literacy, where science informs design decisions and engineering reinforces conceptual understanding, and offers empirical insights into STEM-based learning in elementary education

Abstract

Geometry problem-solving is an essential competency for Primary School Teacher Education students, yet many struggle with three-dimensional visualization. Furthermore, students' persistence in overcoming challenges known as adversity quotient (AQ) significantly influences this process. This study aims to develop augmented reality (AR)-based geometry problems with varying complexity tailored to students' AQ. Using the ADDIE research and development model with 29 student subjects at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. Results show the developed AR-based problems are highly valid, scoring 74% from material experts (good category) and 96% from media experts (very good category), and yielding an 85.89% student response score regarding usability (Good Category). Crucially, empirical data regarding problem-solving skills demonstrated that AR integration successfully scaffolded early-stage spatial representation, enabling 82.76% of the subjects to overcome visualization barriers and comprehend three-dimensional contexts (Polya Stage 1). However, complete problem-solving success across all four Polya stages was achieved by only 24.14% of the cohort (7 students).  The remaining 75.86% experienced structural drop-offs tied to specific AQ obstacles: Quitter students abandoned tasks at the initial stage due to persistent spatial barriers, whereas Camper students successfully devised plans but failed during the execution and verification stages due to arithmetic errors and a lack of looking-back habits. The varied problem complexity serves as an effective differentiated learning strategy, offering targeted visual scaffolding for lower-resilience students while demanding complex reasoning from higher-resilience ones. Therefore, this study contributes significantly to adaptive, technology-based, and inclusive geometry learning.

Abstract

This study examined how situating Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within an ethnomathematical context of local culture functions as a plausible mechanism for numeracy development among elementary school students, responding to calls in the literature to move beyond media- or worksheet-development studies toward theoretically grounded integrations of pedagogy and culture. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design, the study involved 19 students in an experimental class and 18 students in a control class at a public elementary school in Cepu, Central Java, Indonesia. Numeracy was measured with a ten-item essay test covering number sense, arithmetic operations, problem-solving, and data interpretation (content validity: Pearson r > 0.444 for all items; reliability: Cronbach's alpha = 0.982). Because the posttest data violated normality and homogeneity assumptions, the Mann-Whitney U test was used. Results showed a significant difference in posttest scores (U = 43.000; Z = -3.979; p = .000; Cohen's d = 1.53, a large effect), with the experimental class achieving a higher N-Gain (67.81%, moderate category) than the control class (30.42%, moderate category). However, a substantial baseline difference between groups (pretest Cohen's d = 1.17) constitutes a threat to internal validity that qualifies causal interpretation of these gains. The findings extend prior ethnomathematics research - which has largely focused on instructional media or worksheets - by showing that embedding a local cultural problem context directly within PBL's problem-solving syntax offers a plausible contextual-relevance pathway for numeracy gains, while underscoring the need for randomized, multi-site replication before broader causal or generalizable claims can be made.
