Abstract

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a horticultural commodity which the quality and the yield can be enhanced through the application of the Dutch bucket hydroponic system, along with KH₂PO₄ fertilization and gibberellin hormone treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the response of tomato plants in terms of productivity and quality under these treatments. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The first factor was KH₂PO₄ concentration at three levels: 0 ppm, 150 ppm, and 250 ppm; the second factor was gibberellin concentration at three levels: 0 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and DMRT on parameters including number of flowers, number of fruits per plant, fruit diameter, average fruit weight, total fruit weight per plant, and total soluble solids value. The results indicated that the interaction of 150 ppm KH₂PO₄ and 50 ppm gibberellin produced optimal values for fruit weight per fruit of 41.32 g, total fruit weight per plant of 398.67 g, and total soluble solids of 6.28 °Bx. Furthermore, either individual effects of KH₂PO₄ or gibberellin concentrations significantly influenced all observed variables except on fruit diameter. Combination KH2PO4 150 ppm and gibbereilin 50 ppm is recommended for enhancing tomato cultivation performance under the Dutch bucket hydroponic system.

Abstract

Jember Regency is one of the national food storage areas. One of the most important resources in cultivating food crops is water which comes from rainfall. The existence of rainfall data is very important in planning and implementing agricultural activities. Limited rainfall data is the main problem for agricultural planning. One solution to this problem is to utilize rainfall data from CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation Station). The use of CHIRPS data is still biased data, so bias correction is needed to measure the level of accuracy of CHIRPS data for estimating rainfall in an area. Bias correction is carried out using two methods, namely multiple linear regression and power regression. The correction results show that the multiple linear regression method is able to produce monthly rainfall that is close to observations with an RMSE value of 3.9 and a coefficient of determination of 0.99. Temporally, the peak of the rainy season in Jember Regency occurs in December while the dry season is in August. In the rainy season (December-January and February) Jember Regency's rainfall is around 300-500 mm/month and in the dry season (June-July-August) it is in the range of 50-200 mm/month. Spatially, the northern part of Jember, especially Sumberbaru, Bangsalsari and Tanggul subdistricts, is wetter than the Jember Regency area as a whole. The southern part of Jember, especially those close to the coast, has lower rainfall than other regions. In the dry season, rainfall in this region is less than 20 mm/month.

Abstract

Banana (Musa paradisiaca) is one of the important horticultural commodities. This study aims to measure the physical and geometrical parameters of three different bananas (Muli, Ambon, and Kepok) and to develop prediction equations using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. In this study the backpropagation ANN model with supervised learning method was used. The ANN model had one output node, two hidden layers, and network architecture of 8 inputs, namely fruit weight and volume, projected area and roundness of the fruit, cross section, peel color, and geometric mean fruit cross section diameter. The data for building the model and testing the model were respectively 70% and 30% of the 150 data number in total. The results showed that the best ANN model structure for estimating Muli, Ambon and Kepok bananas was purelin-logsig-logsig with an RMSE value of 0.0077 and an R2 of 0.9999. This shows that the ANN model is highly robust to predict the banana types. Using the built model, the accuracy of the prediction results is 100%.  Keywords:  Artificial Neural Network,  Banana fruits,  Geometry attribute.

Abstract

One of the causes of low productivity in cucumber plants is due to low soil quality due to low organic matter content and high sandy soil mixture. Considering this, it is necessary to try to improve it. So, there is a need for research that examines the addition of organic matter and combines sandy media with paddy soil. This research took place in Pecoro Village, Jember Regency from May 2022 to July 2022. The research method was in the form of a Completely Randomized Design with the first treatment, namely the addition of baglog waste compost and cow manure (K1); baglog waste compost and goat manure (K2); and compost baglog waste and chicken manure (K3). While the second treatment is sandy planting media consisting of: sand 100% (M0); 75% sand + 25% paddy soil (M1); 50% sand + 50% paddy soil (M2); and 25% sand + 75% paddy soil (M3). The observed variables included plant height, total fruit weight, fruit unit weight, fruit length and fruit diameter which were tested by means of variance and Duncan's Multiple Range test. The results showed that the treatment of compost, sandy planting media, and their interactions had a significant effect on the observed variables. The recommendations given based on the results of the analysis for cucumber cultivation are the need to add organic matter such as compost mixed with baglog waste and manure from cow, goat and chicken manure with a ratio of 25% sandy planting medium to 75% paddy soil.

Abstract

Declining soil fertility caused by the continuous use of chemical fertilizers has encouraged the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly nutrient management strategies. Compost tea, a liquid extract derived from mature compost, has gained attention due to its potential to supply readily available nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the compost tea production process and assess the effects of aerated compost tea (ACT) and non-aerated compost tea (NACT) at different application concentrations on the early growth of maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions in November 2025 using maize as the test plant. Compost tea was prepared by extracting mature compost in water at a ratio of 1:5, with aeration applied for ACT and without aeration for NACT over a three-day fermentation period. Treatments consisted of ACT and NACT applied at concentrations of 30 ml and 60 ml, along with a control. Plant growth parameters, including plant height and root length, were observed during the early growth phase (2–7 days after planting). The results showed that compost tea application significantly affected maize growth during the early growth stage (P < 0.05). Aerated compost tea generally produced better growth responses than non-aerated compost tea, particularly at lower concentrations. The ACT treatment at 30 ml resulted in the highest plant height and root length, while higher concentrations, especially NACT at 60 ml, tended to suppress plant growth. These findings indicate that compost tea primarily functions as an early growth stimulant and that excessive application may reduce its effectiveness. In conclusion, aerated compost tea at low concentrations is more effective in promoting early maize growth than non-aerated compost tea. Proper optimization of compost tea concentration and application strategy is essential to maximize its benefits within sustainable agricultural systems.
