Abstract

This study aims to develop an innovative instructional medium designed in the form of a visual metaphor-based learning media, specifically for the topic of cells in the science subject (IPA) at the junior high school level Class VIII in SMP Negeri 1 Plumbon. The topic of cell structure and function is often perceived as abstract and difficult for students to understand due to its microscopic nature and the spatial imagination it requires. This study employs a descriptive quantitative method by collecting and analyzing data in the form of student and teacher responses to the use of the media. The primary instrument used was a questionnaire designed to assess student and teacher perceptions regarding the effectiveness, appeal, ease of use, and usefulness of the media in supporting the learning process. The questionnaire was distributed after the classroom implementation of the visual metaphor-based learning media. The analysis results showed that the average student response score reached 89.25%, which falls into the "very positive" category. This indicates that the majority of students felt aided in understanding difficult concepts through metaphorical visualization, which was able to simplify complex biological information. In addition, teacher responses also indicated enthusiasm and support for the use of this media, as it was considered capable of increasing student engagement, deepening conceptual understanding, and encouraging reflective thinking. Therefore, the application of visual metaphor-based media holds great potential to support a more humanistic, contextual, and meaningful transformation of the learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to produce teaching modules that are effective in strengthening the student profile of Pancasila through an active learning approach. The research method used is R&D (Research and Development) with the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Data were collected through learning style questionnaires and experiments in experimental and control classes. The questionnaire was used to measure the mutual cooperation dimension, while the test was used for students' critical thinking. Data analysis was carried out quantitatively using descriptive statistics to describe the learning outcomes of students before and after the application of teaching modules. Hypothesis testing was conducted using the Wilcoxon test to determine significant differences between the experimental and control groups. The results show that the application of teaching modules based on the Merdeka Curriculum can increase students' interest in learning and critical thinking skills in the experimental class compared to the control class. The experimental group's posttest score was significantly higher than the control group. The development of teaching modules based on the characteristics of students has proven to be valid and effective in achieving learning objectives. This can be seen from the increase in affective (mutual cooperation & critical thinking dimensions) and cognitive (formative assessment results) values.

Abstract

This study applies the principles of metaphors and metonymies in visual learning media to manage students’ cognitive load and enhance their comprehension of complex scientific concepts, specifically cell biology, in lower secondary education. Using the ADDIE (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) model, a 2D animated audio-visual learning media was developed and evaluated. The research explored the impact of the developed learning media on intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive loads using questionnaires and pre-/post-tests with 303 participants (science teachers and lower secondary students) from five districts in West Java, Indonesia. Expert evaluations from linguistics, media, and science education specialists were also incorporated. The results indicate that the developed visual media is effective in facilitating information processing and meaning-making, leading to improved comprehension and retention of complex cell biology concepts. The use of metaphors and metonymies helped students connect abstract scientific concepts to familiar contexts, reducing extraneous cognitive load and promoting deeper understanding and concept retention. Overall, the findings suggest that visual media employing metaphors and metonymies can be a valuable tool for teaching highly abstract and complex scientific concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate teachers' and students' perceptions of the use of metaphor in learning biology including the effectiveness of and the interest in using metaphor in learning biology. The investigation builds on assumption that metaphor is a potential method to alter the way teachers and students respond to abstract and complex concepts. The data in this study was obtained qualitatively using the triangulation method involving Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with an expert group and individual interviews. The instrument utilized in this study is a discussion guide and an interview guide containing open questions which later was transcribed and analyzed. The respondents of this study are 30 biology teachers and 71 senior high school students from three districts in West Java, Indonesia.  The result shows that teachers and students respond positively to the use of metaphors in learning biology concepts. In addition, teachers express that metaphor helps in delivering abstract and complex biology concepts as well as developing creativity in teaching. Meanwhile, students express that metaphor has the potential to help them understand biology concepts, increase interest in learning biology, and build relevance to the concept.
