Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the educational system has changed. This brought a significant shift to class and teaching management as well. Teachers manage their classes in various ways by utilizing digital platforms. This study aims at finding out students’ perspective on using website in the teaching and learning process. This study was conducted by using qualitative approach design, with the descriptive case study method. There were 17 university students at Universitas Teuku Umar who were involved as the respondents in this study. In data collection, an interview set consisting of 6 questions was distributed to students. Later, the data were analyzed using interactive analysis through the three steps, which are data identification, data display, and data verification. The result shows that students have positive feedbacks toward the use of websites during online learning rather than other digital platforms. The reasons are the constant availability, length adequacy, and completeness. The implication of this study is that it is more preferrable for students to learn by using websites—or better known as e-learning system—rather than other platforms. Keywords: learning websites, e-learning, positive feedback, digital classroom, COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Error analysis is considered as a significant part in second and foreign language teaching. It helps teachers in understanding the better approaches for instructing by giving the input on the errors produced by students because students can learn from their errors. This study aimed at analyzing the errors produced by students in using do/does, have/has, and had. The methodology employed in this study was qualitative design. The population in this study was 149 students from all study programs. During the data collection, random sampling was utilized and there were 19 female students and 19 male students involved as the sample of this study. The instrument of this study was the instrument of this research adapted from Harald (2011). Later, the data were analyzed using Taxonomic Analysis. The result of the test showed that from the 38 students as the sample, 12 students were in high level of error, 8 students were in the level of fair, and 18 students were considered in the low level of error. These errors are assumed due to the interference of students’ first language structure to English.  DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i1.6684

Abstract

The recent study investigates tertiary students' perspectives on the implementation of the TOEFL benchmark score as a graduation requirement. There were 100 students chosen randomly in this study. Their perspectives were gathered through a questionnaire and an interview to know the students’ strategies and difficulties in answering the TOEFL test. The results showed that most students agree with the TOEFL benchmark as a graduation requirement however they face obstacles in answering the test. From the interview, the result showed that they had difficulties in answering the listening and grammar sections. This resulted in unfamiliarity with foreign sounds and a lack of practice. Besides, students felt that the minimum TOEFL score for the graduation requirement was beyond their ability since most students were not introduced to TOEFL from the beginning of their study. Most students used their strategies in learning TOEFL through searching some materials on the internet as well as from the module they got from English courses. Such strategies help them to increase their ability to improve their TOEFL score.

Abstract

Tourists' demands which particularly those of international visitors are best served by tour guides, who are valuable coastal human resources. English as an international language is essential for communicating with travelers and is a crucial communication ability in the travel and tourism sector. Thence, it is necessary to analyze the English needs of local tour guides on the Simeulue coast. There were ten local tour guides chosen through random sampling as the subjects. The research instrument was a questionnaire set adapted from Prachanant (2012) address needs, functions, and issues with the use of English. It also makes reference to elements from the need analysis model developed by Waters & Hutchinson (1987).Interactive Analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) was used to perform additional analysis on the findings, and the results were later displayed and verified. The results revealed that speaking was the most important English skill for the participants, followed by listening, reading, and writing. Second, individuals felt they lacked proficiency in speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Therefore, they desired to develop their speaking, listening, writing, and reading abilities. It implied that speaking played a major role in tour guiding and needs further follow-ups.

Abstract

This review article presents varied perspectives on teaching methods used in speaking classes. The aims of this study is to give insights on teaching methods that can be adopted, combined, or adapted in accordance with the actual condition of the classes. This information is considered to be important for English teachers, specifically, and for all language instructors and researchers, in general. There are 12 research articles being reviewed in this article under the topic of teaching methods in speaking. These articles were summarized to see the essentials being delivered, challenges presented, and further queries left unanswered which are beneficial for further research to be explored. The result shows that the most striking element in speaking classes is verbal oral expression. All teachers must encourage their students to speak. Later, it is psychological aspects (moods) and learning environment. Mostly, happy environment—not stiff and meticulous environment—brings more willingness for students to speak. Last, not giving them pressure on grammatical aspects is also a spur towards their motivation to speak. Keywords: Teaching Speaking, Learning Speaking, ELT Methods, and EFL Methods
