Abstract

Introduction: Lymphoid neoplasms are abnormalities of the hematopoiesis process of the lymphoid line, which can lead to lymphoma or leukemia. Mesothelioma is an abnormal mesothelial cell growth strongly associated with asbestos exposure. In radiology, mesothelioma is usually described as a tissue-dense lesion with well-defined, spiculated borders attached to the thoracic wall. The picture actually only depicts a tissue attached to the thorax, which can be suspected as mesothelioma, but can also be due to other disease processes, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and tuberculosis. Case: A 58-year-old man presented to the emergency room with complaints of shortness of breath. The patient was initially suspected of mesothelioma with suspicion of blood malignancy, but it turned out that the biopsy results were more likely to lead to infiltration of lymphoid neoplasms. Conclusion: In this patient, a lymphatic neoplasm infiltrated the mesothelial tissue and produced a well-demarcated and spiculated tissue picture resembling mesothelioma. Biopsy examination as the gold standard cannot be replaced by radiologic imaging at this time, as many other disease processes can mimic a malignancy.

Abstract

This study examines empowerment strategies for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the fish processing sector at BOM Pier Kalianda, South Lampung, with a particular focus on their implications from an Islamic economic perspective. Despite the area’s substantial potential in fish processing, MSMEs face persistent challenges, including limited facilities, restricted access to training, and insufficient financing. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, this research collected primary data through interviews and direct observation with 23 informants, complemented by secondary sources from documents and literature. Data were analysed using the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) method to assess the importance and satisfaction levels of 35 empowerment indicators. The findings show that product innovation training, access to raw materials, and financing fall under Quadrant II (priority for improvement), whereas local market access, product quality, and marketing training fall under Quadrant I (to be maintained). From an Islamic economic perspective, empowerment enhances distributive justice, promotes ethical business conduct, and fosters economic self-reliance among coastal communities. The results highlight that empowerment efforts at BOM Pier have generated positive impacts but remain constrained by technical skill gaps, limited access to Sharia-compliant financing, and weak compliance with quality standards. Strengthening policy coordination, infrastructure provision, and financing schemes rooted in Islamic principles is therefore essential for ensuring sustainable MSME development and inclusive economic growth.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the variation in haplotype distribution and phylogenetic relationships of the Philippine scrub fowl based on the EEF2 gene. Eggshell samples were obtained from Tolitoli and Luwuk, Central Sulawesi. DNA isolation followed the gSYNCTM Extraction Kit protocol, and the amplification process was carried out in 38 cycles, including the pre-denaturation stage (95°C, 5 minutes), denaturation stage (95°C, 45 seconds), annealing stage (53°C, 40 seconds), elongation stage (72°C, 1 minute), and post-elongation stage (72°C, 10 minutes), followed by sequencing. Sequence editing was performed using GeneStudio, sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree reconstruction using MEGA 11, and haplotype network reconstruction using DnaSP and PopART. The results showed that the haplotype network based on the EEF2 gene formed three haplotypes, with the population from Tolitoli having a widespread haplotype, while the population from Luwuk had a specific haplotype. In addition, based on the results of phylogenetic tree reconstruction, it was found that the Philippine white-eye birds from Tolitoli and Luwuk were in the same clade but there was genetic variation between populations.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of science and technology, particularly in forensic science, has significantly enhanced crime investigation methodologies. One such advancement is the utilization of Scientific Crime Investigation methods, specifically the analysis of touch DNA from fingerprints. This research investigates the efficiency of fingerprint powders and swabbing agents in improving the quality and quantity of touch DNA for forensic applications. Touch DNA, derived from cellular materials like sweat and skin cells, presents a valuable source of genetic material for identification purposes. The study involved experimental analyses using Regular Silk Black Fingerprint Powder and Magnetic Dual-Purpose Powder, coupled with non-ionic detergent surfactants as swabbing agents. DNA samples were collected from volunteers with varying DNA shedding levels, processed, and analyzed using quantitative PCR and capillary electrophoresis. Results indicated that fingerprint powders significantly reduce the quantity and quality of recovered DNA due to DNA damage caused by the powders' chemical composition. Conversely, using non-ionic surfactants like Triton™ X-100 in swabbing improved DNA recovery and stability, leading to more complete DNA profiles. This study underscores the importance of optimizing fingerprint powder formulations and DNA sampling techniques to enhance forensic DNA analysis. The findings advocate for the development of less damaging fingerprint powders and improved DNA extraction protocols to preserve the integrity of touch DNA evidence in forensic investigations.

Abstract

Proteus mirabilis is pathogenic bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal infections, bacteremia, and Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). Therefore, it is necessary to have a fast, sensitive, specific, and accurate detection method to identify Proteus mirabilis. This study aims to determine the confirmation, specificity, and sensitivity test of the hpmA gene primer to detect Proteus mirabilis quick and precise using the real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction method. Gradient Polymerase Chain Reaction results showed the hpmA primer has an amplicons length of 195 bp and the optimum annealing temperature at 60°C. The primer pair produced Ct value of 10.40±0.18 and showed one peak in the melting curve with Tm value of 81.84°C±0.02 by real-time PCR. Furthermore, the hpmA primer was also able to distinguish target and non-target bacteria based on the difference in Ct and Tm value formed. Based on these results, the concentration of bacterial DNA that can be detected by primers reached 3.2 pg/μL, equivalent to the concentration of target bacteria that can be detected by primers is 10.24×102 CFU. In the next step, hmpA primer will be developed to detect Proteus mirabilis in artificial contaminated samples using real-time PCR.

Abstract

Effective verbal communication, including clear explanations and constructive feedback, ensures that students comprehend the material and feel supported. Nonverbal communication, such as gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact, significantly contributes to sustaining student engagement and motivation. This research examines teachers' various verbal and nonverbal communication techniques in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes and explores their impact on student motivation. The study involved two teachers and 57 students from senior high schools in Indonesia, employing a phenomenological qualitative approach. Data collection methods included observation checklists, interviews, and questionnaires. The analysis revealed that teachers utilized seven distinct verbal communication methods—lecturing, questioning, giving directions, providing praise and encouragement, and offering feedback—and seven nonverbal methods, including eye contact, hand movements, physical proximity, facial expressions, physical appearance, and chronemics (the strategic use of time). Among these, students rated suggestions, praise, and encouragement as the most motivating verbal interactions, while eye contact emerged as the most influential nonverbal factor. These findings underscore the need for targeted teacher training in these communication strategies to foster a more engaging and motivating learning environment, thereby enhancing student learning outcomes in Indonesian EFL contexts.
