Abstract

This review aims to investigate the impact of betel leaf extract administration in enhancing non-specific immunity in fish within the context of aquaculture. A literature review was conducted to evaluate previous studies, analyze the mechanisms of action of active compounds, and provide practical recommendations for field implementation. The review results indicate that betel leaf extract has antimicrobial potential that can inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses, and parasitic agents causing diseases in cultured fish. The administration of this extract also stimulates non-specific immune responses, including increased production of immune cells such as macrophages and lymphocytes. The antioxidant effects of compounds in betel leaves provide protection against oxidative stress, enhancing fish resilience to unfavorable environmental conditions. Despite these positive findings, further research is needed to deeply understand the mechanisms of action of active compounds, taking into account environmental factors in betel leaf extract administration. Integration with other disease management strategies and strict monitoring of environmental safety are crucial aspects of practical implementation. In conclusion, the administration of betel leaf extract can be a promising alternative to enhance fish resistance to diseases in aquaculture. Administering betel leaf extract in feed and water can improve survival rates and egg hatching. Collaboration among researchers, farmers, and other stakeholders is necessary to optimize the practical application of these findings, with the goal of enhancing productivity and sustainability in the aquaculture sector as a whole.Top of Form

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of mangosteen peel extract (Garcinia mangostana) in inhibiting the growth of Gram-negative bacteria in lobster (Panulirus homarus) aquaculture waters. The main problem in lobster farming is bacterial infections that can cause disease and mass mortality. Mangosteen peel extract is known to contain potent antimicrobial compounds. This research employs an experimental method with various concentrations of mangosteen peel extract to test its effect on the growth of Gram-negative bacteria. Based on result, the mangosteen peel inhibition zone against Gram-negative bacteria from lobster aquaculture waters measures 0.25±0.05 cm (25 mm), indicating weak inhibition activity. This suggests that mangosteen peel could be used as an immunostimulant alternative to antibiotics in combating diseases in lobsters. Further research is needed to determine the optimal dosage of mangosteen peel extract to achieve strong inhibition activity against bacteria.

Abstract

The presence of microplastics in the waters is due to plastic garbage that is difficult to decompose. Tilapia that live in the water has a high tolerance for polluted environments, thus making them vulnerable to microplastic contamination. The most common type of microplastic found in water is polyvinyl chloride. The study aims to investigate the effects of microplastic exposure on Tilapia growth and survival. The research plan used a complete random design (CRD) with four treatments and three repetitions. Exposure to microplastics in fish is carried out through feeding, with doses: without microplastic addition; addition of 0.01 mg per 0.75 g of feed; addition of 0.1 mg for 0.75 g of feeding; and addition of 1 mg for every 0.75 grams of feed. The mixed microplastic feed was given three times a day at a dose of 5% of the fish's body weight. Growth and survival data are analyzed using Anova; if there is any real impact, then further testing is done using Duncan. The study's findings showed that adding microplastics to specific weight growth, absolute weight, absolute length, feed conversion ratio, and survival at a dose of 1 mg per 0.75 g of feed was significantly different from treating the animals without adding microplastics. Therefore, we can conclude that a dose of 1 mg per 0.75 g of feed will impact the growth and survival of tilapia.

Abstract

Freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is a freshwater species which intensively cultivated. Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) are crucial factors supporting the biological and physiological activities of freshwater prawns. The presence of calcium and magnesium minerals in the environment is utilized by the prawns, especially after the molting process. Calcium and magnesium play roles in osmoregulation and the formation of the prawn's carapace. This study aims to determine the optimal ratio of calcium and magnesium minerals to support molting frequency, specific growth rate, survival rate, and feed efficiency. The experimental design used in this research is a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and three replicates. The treatment given consisted of increasing Ca-Mg in the media: A: 30 mg l-1 Ca + 0 mg l-1 Mg (1:0); B: 30 mg l-1 Ca + 15 mg l-1 Mg (1:0.5); C: 30 mg l-1 Ca + 30 mg l-1 Mg (1:1); D: 30 mg l-1 Ca + 45 mg l-1 Mg (1:1.5) and E: 30 mg l-1 Ca + 60 mg l-1 Mg (1:2). Based on the result, treatment C: 30 mg l-1 Ca + 30 mg l-1 Mg (1:1) was found to improve molting frequency, growth rate, feed efficiency and survival rate.

Abstract

Color enhancement in ornamental fish is an essential quality parameter that directly influences market value and consumer preference. Natural pigments derived from marine resources, such as seaweed, offer a sustainable alternative to synthetic color enhancers. This study aimed to determine the effect of seaweed meal (Eucheuma cottonii) on the color brightness of goldfish (Carassius auratus). Goldfish used had an initial weight of 10.12 ± 0.06 g and an initial length of 5.08 ± 0.02 cm. Fish were fed using the ad libitum method three times daily with four feed treatments: P1 (Control), P2 (4 g seaweed meal), P3 (8 g seaweed meal), and P4 (12 g seaweed meal). The study was conducted for 45 days to evaluate growth performance and color characteristics. A completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications was applied. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA at a 95% confidence level (p < 0.05). Results showed that the addition of seaweed meal significantly influenced the red hue variable in goldfish. Brightness showed no significant difference among treatments, with the highest value in P4 (55.88%) and the lowest in P3 (52.68%). The red hue differed significantly, with the highest value in P3 (16.96%) and the lowest in P1 (9.13%). The yellow hue showed no significant difference, with values ranging from 36.68% (P1) to 38.43% (P2). Overall, supplementation with 8 g of seaweed meal effectively enhanced the visual red hue of goldfish.

Abstract

Feed stability is a crucial factor in aquaculture, as it affects both the physical integrity of the feed and its acceptance by aquatic species. For Monopterus albus (swamp eel), maintaining feed stability while ensuring palatability is vital for optimal growth and health. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different binder types and concentrations on the stability and acceptability of pasta feed for Monopterus albus (swamp eel). Seven binders—gelatin, gluten, CMC, chitosan, alginate, guargum, and carrageenan—were tested at 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20% concentrations using a completely randomized design. Feed disintegration and breakdown times, along with feeding behavior, were analyzed using non-parametric tests. Gelatin, CMC, and chitosan significantly improved feed stability (p < 0.05), maintaining cohesion for over 40 minutes. Gelatin at 10% concentration yielded optimal results, balancing water resistance and palatability. Behavioral observations showed that gelatin-based feeds were most preferred, with increased feeding frequency and consumption. When combined with natural attractants such as worms and snails, gelatin feeds enhanced intake rates. These outcomes indicate that protein-based binders, particularly gelatin, offer superior mechanical and nutritional advantages compared to polysaccharide alternatives. Gelatin’s dual role as a binder and nutritional enhancer provides a promising strategy for sustainable aquaculture feed development.
