Abstract

ABSTRACT Eurycoma longifolia Jack. including species from the family Simaroubaceae tree-shaped plants whose height can reach 10-15 m. E. longifolia Jack. is one of the potential medicinal plants and has high economic value if it is developed, because the extra roots of the earth pegs contain several medicinal compounds. Structure and pattern of distribution of individual populations of a species one alternative that can be done to support species conservation efforts. The area of sampling area is 1 ha through 100 x 10 meter double plot vegetation analysis of 100 plots that are systematically located. In the condition of plant population structure, there are each individual growth stages most found in the 121 individual seedling stages and followed by 4 individual sapling growth stages. Through the calculation of the morisita index, it is known that the distribution pattern of the earth peg (E. longifolia Jack.) Groups with a morisita index value of 1.70. The distribution pattern of clusters shows that the presence of a plant will give an indication for similar plants, this is because individuals have a tendency to gather and look for environmental conditions that suit their needs.   Keywords: Eurycoma longifolia Jack, population structure and distribution patterns.

Abstract

Peat swamp forests are ecologically important ecosystems that regulate hydrology, store carbon, and support high biodiversity. The Sungai Buluh Peat Forest Reserve in Mendahara Ulu District, Tanjung Jabung Timur, Jambi Province, Indonesia, represents a relatively undisturbed tropical peat swamp forest with high potential for tree species diversity. This study assessed tree species composition, diversity, and community structure in the Sinar Wajo and Sungai Beras Village Forests to support ecological monitoring and guide sustainable forest. Species dominance was analyzed using the Importance Value Index (IVI), while community structure was evaluated using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′), Pielou’s evenness (E), Margalef’s richness (Dmg), and community similarity (IS). A total of 45 species from 22 families were recorded in Sinar Wajo Village Forest, while 36 species from 21 families were documented in Sungai Beras Village Forest. Diversity and richness were higher in Sinar Wajo village forest, while both sites exhibited high evenness and low dominance, indicating stable and heterogeneous communities. Community similarity between the two forests was high, suggesting comparable ecological and environmental conditions. These results provide a comprehensive overview of tree species composition and community structure in the Sungai Buluh Peat Forest Reserve. The study emphasizes the importance of baseline ecological data to guide sustainable forest management and conservation, supporting biodiversity preservation and maintaining ecosystem functions in tropical peat swamp forests.

Abstract

Coral reef degradation on Samalona Island, Makassar City, has occurred as a result of anthropogenic pressures and changes in the marine environment. This condition directly affects the decline of ecological functions and the carrying capacity of marine ecosystems. This community service activity aims to rehabilitate coral reefs through a coral transplantation method based on collaboration between higher education institutions and the diving community. The methods employed include site surveys, fragmentation of healthy corals, attachment of coral fragments to artificial substrate media, as well as arrangement and tagging for monitoring purposes. The activity was conducted on November 25, 2025, in the waters of Samalona Island, involving lecturers from the Fisheries Science Study Program of Wira Bhakti University and partners from GGI SCUBA. The results show the successful installation of coral transplantation structures with hundreds of live coral fragments that have the potential to form new habitats for marine biota. This program is expected to gradually increase live coral cover and support the sustainability of marine ecosystems and marine tourism. This activity represents the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education in supporting coastal environmental conservation.

Abstract

Samalona Island is one of the leading marine tourism destinations in Makassar City that faces coastal environmental pollution problems due to the accumulation of waste, particularly plastic debris. Intensive tourism activities, limited waste management facilities, and low environmental awareness among local communities and visitors are the main factors contributing to the decline in coastal environmental quality. This community service program aims to improve the cleanliness of the island’s environment and to enhance the environmental awareness of both the local community and tourists regarding the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems through the Clean Island Action program. The methods employed include beach and shallow-water clean-up activities, environmental education, and evaluation of participant involvement and program outcomes. The activity was conducted on December 6, 2025, on Samalona Island, involving lecturers, students, local residents, and environmental volunteers. The results indicate a reduction in waste volume in coastal and beach areas, as well as increased participation and awareness among participants regarding waste management. This program has generated positive ecological and social impacts and has the potential to serve as a community-based model for sustainable coastal environmental management.
