Abstract

In order to increase public understanding and awareness regarding the safety use of drugs and cosmetics, the Community Service Team of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Airlangga University has held community service in Jonggrangan Village, Klaten, Central Java. The community service was carried out on July 31, 2023, with approximately 60 family welfare programs or PKK cadres and health cadres participating through training, presentations, and discussions. The activity began with a pre-test, continued with training, a presentation of the material by three experts, and a discussion, then ended with giving a post-test to the participants. The results of the pre and post-test analysis showed that participants' understanding increased. The results of the analysis of the answers to the 15 questions given showed that the increase in participants' understanding ranged from  2.13-46.02 percent. The impact of these activities on society. The increase in participants' understanding of each topic is not the same depending on the initial understanding. However, the problem is that the level of public understanding after receiving training is still below 50 percent namely on topics about the stages of using cosmetic products and about drug classification. So it is necessary to deepen the material using other strategies (appropriate methods and media).

Abstract

Kelurahan Gisting Atas, Kecamatan Gisting, Kabupaten Tanggamus, Lampung, merupakan kawasan dataran tinggi yang dikenal memiliki potensi pertanian kopi yang subur. Meskipun produksi kopi di wilayah ini terus meningkat, namun pendapatan masyarakat belum mengalami peningkatan yang signifikan. Salah satu faktor penyebabnya adalah kurangnya kreativitas dalam mengolah limbah kulit ari kopi. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilaksanakan oleh Tim Pengmas Fakultas Farmasi Universitas Airlangga bertujuan untuk memberdayakan masyarakat setempat melalui pelatihan pembuatan produk berbasis kopi, seperti clay mask dan body scrub, yang dapat meningkatkan nilai jual kopi dan membuka peluang usaha baru. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga meliputi penyuluhan tentang cara penyimpanan kopi yang benar guna menjaga kualitas dan daya jual kopi yang lebih tinggi. Pelatihan diikuti oleh 40 petani kopi dari Kelompok Tani Hutan Wira Karya Sejahtera 1, dengan evaluasi pemahaman peserta melalui pre-test dan post-test. Hasil dari kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat mengurangi ketergantungan pada penjualan kopi mentah, meningkatkan pendapatan masyarakat, serta mendorong diversifikasi produk kopi yang lebih inovatif. Program ini juga sejalan dengan upaya pemerintah Provinsi Lampung dalam meningkatkan perekonomian daerah dan mendukung pencapaian Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (SDG), khususnya SDG 3 (Kesehatan yang Baik dan Kesejahteraan) dan SDG 8 (Pertumbuhan Ekonomi yang Inklusif dan Berkelanjutan).

Abstract

Background: ICH accounts for 20% of stroke cases, with a mortality rate of 40-50%. Despite available agents such as citicoline and piracetam, neuroprotective therapy for ICH remains unsatisfactory. TQ, the main active compound of Nigella sativa, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but its role in ICH has not been studied. Objective: To evaluate the effect of thymoquinone on inhibiting the progression of brain damage in a Wistar rat model of ICH and to explore potential mechanisms Methods: Male Wistar rats (n=55, 200–220 g) were randomly assigned to five groups: control (no treatment), ICH without thymoquinone (terminated immediately), ICH with corn oil (terminated after 7 days), and ICH with thymoquinone at doses of 150 and 250 mg/kg body weight orally for 7 days (terminated after 7 days). ICH was induced by autologous blood injection (0.12 ml) into the brain parenchyma. Brain and serum samples were analyzed for NLRP3, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, MMP-9, SOD, MDA, and necrotic cells using ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and histology. Statistical analyses included univariate analysis, Shapiro–Wilk, Kruskal–Wallis, and Mann–Whitney U tests. Results: TQ administration significantly altered MMP-9 levels (p=0.000), which increased compared with untreated ICH. TQ was associated with reductions in NLRP3, TNF-α, and IL-1β, while increasing SOD activityMDA levels remained elevated. These effects were dose-dependent, with the most consistent changes observed at 250 mg/kg. Conclusion: TQ modulated inflammatory and oxidative pathways in ICH and unexpectedly upregulated MMP-9, suggesting a dual role in early injury and later tissue remodeling. These findings support TQ as a potential natural neuroprotective agent.
