Abstract

The chlorophyll-a is an important biological parameter that could act as a proxy to indicate the abundance of phytoplankton and the primary productivity of an aquatic ecosystem. This paper investigates the vertical and horizontal variability of chlorophyll-a in the waters of Sangihe and Talaud Islands, Indonesia, and its correlation with water environmental parameters. In this study, the distribution of chlorophyll-a, temperature, salinity, and nutrients (NO3 and PO4) from the surface to a depth of 200 m (photic zone) was measured at 29 research stations. The results showed that the distribution of chlorophyll-a in the waters of the Sangihe-Talaud Islands was varied vertically and horizontally. The waters around the Sangihe Islands generally exhibited a higher chlorophyll-a distribution and shallower Deep Chlorophyll Maxima compared to the water around the Talaud Islands. The concentration of chlorophyll-a varied between 0.0017 and 1.2155 mg.m-3, with most of the water column in Sangihe-Talaud considered oligotrophic, although some stations or depths were mesotrophic or slightly eutrophic. The maximum chlorophyll-a concentration was found in the sub-surface layer at depths between 46 and 101 m. The low N:P ratio (<16) and N:Si ratio (<1) indicate that the water columns of Sangihe-Talaud, up to a depth of 200m, were N-limited. Based on the GAM analysis, chlorophyll-a concentration in Sangihe-Talaud waters was primarily regulated by temperature, salinity, and the N:P ratio, with weak influence from phosphate and the N:Si ratio. The analysis also suggests that primary productivity in Sangihe-Talaud is sensitive to temperature changes, indicating its vulnerability to future warming events.

Abstract

Conventionally, identifying phytoplankton species is challenging due to human taxonomical knowledge limitations. Advanced technology can overcome this problem. A novel model that accurately enhances phytoplankton detection and identification classification by combining asymmetric convolution and vision transformers (ACVIT) within the YOLOv8m framework is promoted with ACVIT-YOLO. The performance of this model surpasses the original YOLOv8m model, exhibiting a notable 2.4% enhancement in precision, 5.5% improvement in recall, and 1.1% gain in mAP 50 score. The enhanced effectiveness of ACVIT-YOLO compared to the YOLOv8m model, further demonstrated by the decreased giga floating-point operations (GFLOP), decreased parameter count, and compact dimensions, significantly improves the automation of phytoplankton species identification. This suggests that the ACVIT-YOLO model could produce a better prediction system for identifying phytoplankton with similar accuracy to the original YOLOv8m model but with lower computational power and resource usage.

Abstract

The humid environment facilitates the survival and proliferation of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Nowadays, there are many chemically-based mosquito repellents available in the market. However, instead of eliminating the diseases or problems caused by mosquitoes, these chemical insecticides actually give rise to new issues such as respiratory disturbances in humans. Therefore, an innovation has emerged to create OMWIS which is a botanical mosquito insecticide. The puIDRose of this study is to analyze business feasibility and develop a strategy for developing OMWIS innovative products using the SWOT analysis method internally (strengths and weaknesses) and externally (opportunities and threats). This type of research is descriptive qualitative and quantitative research using SWOT analysis. The results of the SWOT analysis matrix for OMWIS products based on the SO strategy indicate to maintain and expand cooperation with suppliers of coffee grounds, continue to develop product and packaging innovations, maintain a lower price compared to conventional mosquito repellents, and position it as an effective natural room freshener. The advantages of OMWIS compared to similar products are that it is made from natural and safe materials for both humans and the environment, serving as both aromatherapy and mosquito repellent, providing a longer-lasting fragrance due to the addition of heavy fraction patchouli essential oil, practical and easy to use, premium packaging to preserve product integrity and portability, and affordable pricing, even cheaper than similar products. With a selling price of IDR 65,000/90 mL jar, OMWIS generates a profit of IDR 21,606/jar and making it as viable business venture. Keywords:citronella, patchouli, lemon, coffee grounds, natural insecticides, mosquito, aroma therapy, OMWIS

Abstract

Damage to coral reef ecosystems and changes in water quality are capable of increasing the abundance of benthic dinoflagellates which could cause Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP). Therefore, this research aimed to observe spatial and temporal abundance of those potential benthic dinoflagellates and analyze their relationship with environmental factors. Sampling was carried out on September 21-24, 2023 in Pramuka Island, Seribu Islands district, with different treatments, namely depth, location and time. Research conducted by deploy several series of artificial substrates into the waters, and the benthic dinoflagellates were collected from the artificial substrate placed in 1, 3, and 5 meter of water depths for 24, 48, and 72 hours at Odi, Mazu, and Villa Delima Piers. Cell densities were determined by enumeration using a Sedgewick Rafter Counting Chamber under a light microscope, and the relationship with environmental parameters was analyzed by using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results showed that 4 genera of benthic dinoflagellates which had the potential to cause CFP, were attached to the artificial substrate, namely Amphidinium, Coolia, Ostreopsis, and Prorocentrum. Prorocentrum cells were observed in highest number on artificial substrates at every treatment with different depths, locations, and times. Furthermore, the PCA analysis showed the abundance of Prorocentrum was influenced by the most typical environmental parameters at each depth, location, and time, namely temperature, nitrate, DO, and light intensity. The research provided valuable information on the benthic dinoflagellates both spatially and temporally, through international standard methods in order to prevent and anticipate negative impacts caused by CFP.

Abstract

West Kalimantan Province experiences forest and land fires every year. To detect the beginning of forest and land fires, namely by the presence of hot spots. The existence of Hot Spots (Hotspots) in the area shows that there are initial indications that forest and land fires have occurred. This research aims to determine the trends, emergence and distribution of Hotspots in West Kalimantan Province for the period 2018 to 2022. The method uses data collection techniques through obtaining hotspot data and the extent of forest and land fires via the website https:// sipongi.menlhk.go.id/. In this study, there is Descriptive Analysis and Spatial Analysis using Arc Gis 10.8 Software. as well as data processing via Excel. The results of the research show that the distribution pattern of hot spots (hotspots) in the West Kalimantan Province area is a total of 21,292 hot spots (hotspots) with the largest number of hot spots appearing in 2019 with a total of 11,804 hot spots (hotspots). With the frequent emergence of hot spots, there are 7,988 hot spots in Ketapang district, 2,562 hot spots in Sanggau district, 2,239 hot spots in Sintang district, and 1,813 hot spots in Kubu Raya district, Kapuas Hulu district has 1,093 hot spots (hotspots) and Landak district has 1,062 hot spots (hotspots). The highest area of forest and land fires in 2019 was around 151,819 Ha and the smallest area in 2020 was around 7,647 Ha. Meanwhile, the district with the highest area in 2019 was Ketapang district, covering an area of 91,388 hectares. Meanwhile, the smallest area of forest and land fires was in Singkawang city and North Kayong district with an area of 0 (Nil) in 2020. Conclusion The Ketapang, Sanggau, Sintang, Kubu Raya, Kapuas Hulu and Landak districts in West Kalimantan Province are areas with a high tendency for hotspots to appear. This shows that these areas are vulnerable to forest or land fires. Recommendations To predict the occurrence of forest and land fires in a certain area, it would be necessary to conduct a ground check or direct field inspection to determine the condition of land cover, weather and climate factors at the research location regarding the distribution of hot spots because hot spots are not necessarily fire spots. It is very necessary to carry out a field ground check
