Abstract

Indigofera tinctoria is one of the most important species frequently used to produce natural blue dye commercially. The leafy twigs are the main sourches of indigo dye use since very ancient time for dyeing textile blue. The source of blue colour is indigo, derived from indican. Some communities had been used as a dye since 352-395 AD in Indonesia. The aims of this research were: to analyzed morphological characters of Indigofera and studied the relationships among Indigofera species based on morphological data. Forty-nine samples of I. tinctoria L. were collected from 37 locations in Java and Madura islands. The results revealed that the characters  length of petiole, the color of dried foliage upper surface, the color of dried foliage lower surface, crown shape, vexilum shape, indumentum bract, anther trichome, elevation and soil pH can group four accession. The similarity value among accessions was 50% and divided I. Tinctoriaaccessions into four groups in accordance with the sampling sites.Keyword: blue dye, diversity, indigo, indicant, Indigofera, morphological characters

Abstract

This study aims to examine teh effect of static, dynamic, and static dynamic media to conceptual understanding of students grade XI. The participant were selected using a cluster sampling and selected samples were class scince 3, science 5, science 6, and science 7. Science 7 as control class, Science 3 as first experiment class that use static media, Science 5 as second experiment class(dynamic media), and science 6 as third experiment class with static-dynamic media. The total participants were 148 students. Learning was focused on the topic of human reproductive system. The conceptual understanding of students was assesed by two-tier test at the end of experiment. Data was analyzed analyzed by One Way ANOVA test with α = 0.05,  and further tested with Duncan test. The results are (1) there is an effect of type of media used to the conceptual understanding of students; (2) static-dynamic media shows the highest score. It is concluded that static-dynamic media can be recommended to apply in the biology class, particularly on human reproductive system

Abstract

Keywords:        lesson design, CAR, PCK, animalia, biologi SMA

Abstract

This research aims to study (1) the pattern of scientific communication in biology classes, and (2) the factors and reasons hinder the communication process during the learning process. This is a classroom observation conducted in two classes of grade XI Science of Gondangrejo High School, which were selected randomly. Fifty-five students participated, and two biology teachers had also been involved. The pattern of scientific communication was analyzed based on 10 times observations of both classes, then all communications recorded and analyzed based on VICS Flanders. The hindrances of communication were checked based on categorization introduced by Lunenburg, which consists of four: process, physics, semantic, and psycho social. The findings of the research shows that the pattern of communication is mostly balance between teacher and students, which is represented by region C G J K L M P R (52.43%). Whilst, the area of teacher's domination is 24.79% (A B D E F H I ), and the area of student’s domination scores 22.78% (N O S T). The pattern of scientific communication is two ways communication between teacher and students, but the frequency of student to initiate the communication remains low. The factors hinder the communication process are process barriers.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to improve quantity and quality of student’s question through problem based learning in biology at grade X IIS 4 of SMA Negeri 5 Surakarta. The research was 4 cycles action research that conducted in academic year 2014/2015. Data were collected through observation, interview and video recording, and validated using triangulation method. Quantity of question collected by counting the number of questions during the learning process. Quality of question categorized based on revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The result of this research shows: 1) PBL effectively increased the quantity and quality of questions; 2) the quality of student’s question in each cycle at factual, conceptual, procedural dimension. Metacognitiv dimension was identified in the last cycles; 3) the increasing of quantity student’s question from first cycles to the fourth cycles is 156 question at first cycles, 130 question at second cycles, 136 question at fthird cycles and 226 question at fourth cycles. Keywords: quantity and quality of student’s question, problem based learning

Abstract

The research aims to constructthe paper test to assess the higher order thinking skills of high school students. The research was designed based on Borg and Gall research method. Firstly, test from national examination, formative and summative test, and also the test written in  high school Biology textbook commonly used in Surakarta were analyzed, and it found that most of the test are to measure the lower order thinking skills. Draft of HOTS on reproductive system then been formulated, and validated by three experts and teachers on three aspects, i.e. language, content, and construction of the instrument. The test was divided into two packages, A and B, each consists of 15-multiple choice items, and 5 essays. Test have to be finished in 60 minutes. To test the visibility of the instrument, a First Trial had been done to a small number of students. Obtained data was quantitively analyzed using theMicroCatITEMAN program version 3.00 for the multiple choice to check reliability, level of difficulty, discriminating index and effectiveness of the distractor, while the essay was analyzed using the Microsoft Excel for reliability, level of difficulty, as well as discriminating index. The result shows that A type test consists of 43 % of items were accepted, 24% item revised, and 33 % rejected. While the B test package has 62% item were accepted, 33 % item were revised, and 5 % item were rejected. Keywords: Assessment , High Order Thinking Skills, Reproductive System
