Abstract

This study was motivated by the lack of learning media and the absence of materials that support early childhood understanding of distinguishing the letters “b” and “d” as a foundation of language education. The research aimed to develop Flapbook media to improve the ability of children aged 5–6 years in recognizing the letters “b” and “d,” as well as to test its validity and effectiveness. The method used was Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implement, Evaluate). The subjects were 30 children aged 5–6 years at TK Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Surabaya. Data collection techniques included questionnaires and observation, while data analysis employed the Mann-Whitney test. The Flapbook was designed in A4 size. Validation tests by material and media experts indicated that the Flapbook is feasible for use. The results showed Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) < 0.001 < 0.05, meaning the Flapbook was effective in improving children’s ability to recognize “b” and “d.” Repeated activities supported this improvement, suggesting its integration into early childhood curricula.

Abstract

The development of logical thinking skills and spatial visual intelligence in children aged 4ÔÇô5 years is essential for fostering early understanding of geometric concepts. Many children at this stage still experience difficulties recognizing basic geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles, along with identifying concrete examples from their surroundings. This study aims to develop and examine the MEGA (Media Edukasi Geometri Anak) application as a varied alternative learning medium to stimulate these abilities. The research applies a Research and Development (R&D) model with a one-group pretest-posttest design. A total of 25 children aged 4ÔÇô5 years from Kindergarten Muslimat Kabuh were involved, with data gathered through observational research activities. The effectiveness of the application was analyzed using the N-gain test. Results indicate that the application effectively enhances logical thinking, enabling children to better recognize and distinguish geometric shapes. Furthermore, spatial visual intelligence develops, as children become able to identify colors, name vertical and horizontal lines within geometric drawings, and relate real-world objects to their geometric forms. These findings highlight meaningful improvements in childrenÔÇÖs cognitive and spatial abilities after engaging with the MEGA application, showing its potential as an alternative learning medium in early childhood educational settings.┬á

Abstract

This study explores how smartphone usage acts as a mediator in the connection between working mothers and social interaction among children aged 3–6 years in East Java, Indonesia. Due to the insufficient reading and writing skills of children in this age range to complete questionnaires for the children’s interaction variable, data were gathered from their parents’ perspective, notably working mothers, who offered insights into their parenting behaviors and their children’s interaction patterns when using the smartphone. The research utilized a mediation analysis design to examine the relationships among the variables. A structured questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 400 working mothers chosen through purposive sampling. Data were subjected to path analysis, with Hayes’s PROCESS Model 4 applied to examine mediation effects. The results revealed a substantial negative correlation between the smartphone usage (M) of working mothers and the social interactions of their children. Furthermore, smartphone usage was identified as a mediator in the association between working mothers and children’s social interaction, indicating that heightened dependence on smartphones by mothers may indirectly diminish the quality of parent-child interactions and children’s interaction with peers. These findings highlight the significance of intentional technology utilization in parenting, particularly for working mothers managing professional and caregiving responsibilities.

Abstract

Social anxiety is a common emotional problem in early childhood that may hinder social development and interaction readiness. One parental factor assumed to reduce children’s social anxiety is parental self-compassion. This study aimed to examine the effect of parental self-compassion on social anxiety among early childhood children in Surabaya. A quantitative causal-comparative (ex post facto) design was employed. The sample consisted of 405 parents of children aged 3–6 years selected using stratified sampling. Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires measuring three dimensions of parental self-compassion (self-kindness, mindfulness, and common humanity) and children’s social anxiety. Data were analyzed using classical assumption tests and multiple linear regression with SPSS. The results indicated that parental self-compassion significantly affected children’s social anxiety simultaneously (F = 336.353; p < 0.05). Partially, all dimensions of self-compassion showed significant effects, with self-kindness as the strongest predictor. These findings suggest that higher parental self-compassion is associated with lower social anxiety in early childhood.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the impact of online game interaction on the social- emotional abilities of 5-6 year old children in Surabaya using a quantitative approach and ex post facto method. The respondents in this study were the biological mothers of 5-6 year old children who were considered to have emotional closeness and adequate understanding of their children's social-emotional conditions. Data were collected through questionnaires designed based on the dimensions of online game interaction use and children's social- emotional abilities, then analyzed using simple linear regression with the help of the SPSS program. The results showed that the use of online game interactions had a significant negative impact on the social-emotional abilities of 5-6 year old children in Surabaya, as indicated by a decline in social interaction, cooperation, empathy, and control of children's emotions and behavior. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the higher the intensity of online game interaction usage, the greater the potential for hindering the social- emotional development of early childhood, thus requiring the role of parents and educators in supervising and directing online game usage so that it does not have a negative impact on children's development.

Abstract

Anxiety disorders are a common phenomenon in early childhood that can hinder social and cognitive development. This study aims to analyze the contribution of parental emotional engagement to anxiety in children aged 4-6 years in Tuban Regency. The method used is quantitative causal-associative with a sample of 400 biological parents determined through purposive sampling across 20 sub-districts. Data were collected using Likert scale questionnaires measuring the dimensions of secure base and safe haven, as well as four anxiety dimensions in the Preschool Anxiety Scale-Revised (PAS-R). Data analysis utilized simple linear regression preceded by ex post facto. The results showed a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.419 and a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). The regression equation Y = 67.198 - 0.834X indicates a significant negative relationship, where an increase in parental emotional engagement is followed by a decrease in child anxiety. An R Square value of 0.176 indicates that emotional engagement contributes 17.6% to the variation in child anxiety. These findings emphasize the importance of the parental role as an emotionally responsive figure in creating a sense of security for children. Researchers suggest the need for strengthening parenting literacy based on emotion coaching in both family and early childhood education (PAUD) environments.
