Abstract

This research was motivated by the low level of cognitive development in children aged 5–6 years at TKIT Darul Qur’an Madani, where learning was still general and did not optimally stimulate children's thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of implementing STEAM-based learning using coconut plants as a medium on improving cognitive development in children aged 5–6 years in Group B at TKIT Darul Qur’an Madani. The method used in this study was a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest-posttest approach. The research subjects consisted of 15 children using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through pretest and posttest observations using a cognitive development assessment sheet based on the indicators from the Indonesian Ministry of Education Regulation No. 137 of 2013. Data analysis was conducted using a paired sample t-test with the help of SPSS version 22. The results showed that the average pretest score of 5.00 increased to 10.00 in the posttest. The t-test results showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant effect of implementing STEAM-based learning through coconut plants on improving children's cognitive development. Thus, STEAM-based learning has proven effective in stimulating early childhood learning and problem-solving abilities in a contextual, enjoyable, and holistic manner.

Abstract

Purpose – This study develops and validates an Outcome-Based Education (OBE)-aligned digital learning module to enhance flexibility, interactivity, and curricular relevance in early childhood teacher education, addressing gaps in existing modules related to incomplete instructional design, weak outcome alignment, and limited responsiveness to digital learning demands.Design/methods/approach – The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, questionnaires, and documentation. The module was reviewed by experts in education and educational technology and piloted with 41 students and two lecturers to assess validity, usability, and instructional feasibility. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired-sample t-tests.Findings – The findings provide context-sensitive evidence that the developed module functions as a valid, practical, and pedagogically coherent instructional resource in early childhood teacher education. Rather than suggesting that digitalization alone explains the observed gains, the results indicate that the module’s value lies in the integration of clearly specified learning outcomes, multimedia-supported delivery, and more structured student access to learning materials. The module was associated with meaningful short-term improvement in students’ cognitive performance and positive engagement during implementation, while expert review confirmed its alignment with curriculum outcomes and its suitability for the instructional context. At the same time, these findings should be interpreted with caution, as the study design does not permit strong causal claims or long-term conclusions about sustained learning impact.Research implications/limitations – This study was conducted within a single early childhood teacher education program and focused on short-term instructional outcomes; thus, findings indicate contextual promise rather than broad generalizability. Future research should examine diverse institutional and cultural settings and explore long-term impacts on pedagogical competence, learner autonomy, and teaching practice.Practical implications – The module provides a practical reference for aligning outcome-based education (OBE) with digital pedagogy in early childhood teacher education. It can support lecturers and institutions in redesigning learning materials to be more outcome-oriented, student-centered, and accessible amid curriculum reform.Originality/value – This study offers a contextually grounded framework integrating OBE, multimedia pedagogy, and student access in digital learning design. Its contribution lies in operationalizing constructive alignment in a meaningful way, providing a replicable model for reform-oriented and Global South contexts.Paper type Research paper

Abstract

This study aimed to adapt the Student–Teacher Relationship Scale into Indonesian and to examine its psychometric reliability in the Indonesian educational context. The research participants were Indonesian teachers working with youth learners, selected through purposive sampling based on their direct instructional involvement with students. The adaptation process employed a quantitative methodological approach and followed standard cross-cultural procedures, including forward translation, back-translation, expert judgment, and cultural refinement to ensure semantic and conceptual equivalence. Data were collected using STRS which measures three core dimensions of teacher–student relationships: openness, conflict, and dependency. Reliability analysis was conducted using Cronbach’s alpha to assess internal consistency. The results indicated that the Indonesian version of the instrument demonstrated high reliability, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.894, suggesting strong internal consistency across items. Minor linguistic adjustments were implemented to enhance cultural appropriateness without altering the theoretical constructs measured by the scale. To sum up, the findings indicate that the Indonesian adaptation of the Student–Teacher Relationship Scale is a reliable instrument for assessing teacher–student relationship quality in Indonesian educational settings. The adapted scale can be applied by researchers and educational practitioners to better understand relational dynamics that contribute to children’s school adjustment and to inform educational intervention.
