Abstract

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a horticultural plant with high nutritional and economic value and good development prospects in Indonesia. However, the high costs of hydroponic fertilizers drive research to find more economical alternatives, such as substitution with Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF). This study aims to analyze consumer perceptions of hydroponic lettuce using LOF substitution and understand consumer responses and purchasing behavior toward these products to identify the attributes influencing purchasing decisions for hydroponic lettuce with LOF substitution. The study employs a survey method with purposive sampling, involving 35 regular customers and 15 supermarket shoppers from PT ABA to collect primary data through questionnaires regarding consumer interest in hydroponic lettuce with LOF substitution. Additionally, proximate analysis and nutrient content testing are conducted in the laboratory. Data analysis uses conjoint and discriminant analysis with SPSS Statistics 24 to evaluate consumer responses and the most preferred product model based on nutritional attributes, price, and weight. The study successfully analyzes consumer perceptions of hydroponic lettuce with LOF substitution and finds that consumers have a positive view of this product, mainly due to its better nutritional content and the plant's ability to absorb nutrients optimally. These factors significantly influence purchasing decisions, with the main attributes being price, weight, and nutritional content.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the physiological response of female beef cattle to peatland microclimate stress in Central Kalimantan. This study used direct observation on small holder beef cattle farm. Microclimate data on 41 units cattle barns and physiological parameters of female cattle were collected in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon. The physiological parameter measurements involved 215 female beef cattle, consisting of 119 Bali and 96 crossbred cattle with different physiological stages including pregnant cows, lactating cows, dry cows, heifers and calves. The microclimate condition within cattle barns on peatland of Central Kalimantan is not the comfort zone for beef cattle. It is characterized by high air temperature and relative humidity, and low wind speed, which result in high temperature humidity index (THI). The barn with gable roof type and asbestos materials gave the lowest THI. This Microclimate caused heat stress to beef cattle reared on the peatlands, indicated by the high rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and heat tolerance coefficient, although it was still categorized as mild to moderate stress. Bali cattle showed better physiological responses to microclimate stress than crossbred cattle. Pregnant crossbred cows were the most susceptible to peatland microclimate stress.

Abstract

Indonesia faces the challenge of declining agroecosystem quality due to the long-term use of synthetic chemical fertilizers, indicating the need for a transition to organic fertilizers to support sustainable agricultural practices. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the quality of liquid organic fertilizer made from dairy cow manure, laying hen manure, and Indigofera zollingeriana and to examine the effects of the combination of liquid organic fertilizer on the growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). This research uses a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) experimental method with five treatments of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) substitution and three replications to evaluate its effects on the growth and yield of hydroponic lettuce, where the data are analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. The results show that the liquid organic fertilizer produced from the combination of dairy cow manure, laying hen manure, and Indigofera zollingeriana meets the quality standards of Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 261 of 2019 with a total N content of 3.11%, P2O5 2.12%, and K2O 1.94%, and is effective in enhancing lettuce growth. The combination of liquid organic fertilizer and AB Mix, particularly AB Mix 75% + LOF 25% and AB Mix 50% + LOF 50%, results in optimal lettuce growth. Therefore, using a combination of liquid organic fertilizer and AB Mix can increase the efficiency of lettuce production in hydroponic systems and can be adopted by farmers to improve crop yields and quality.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of temperature differences on broiler chickens’ blood profiles and performance. The experiment used two thermal environments, 20°C (T20) and 30°C (T30), which represent comfortable and heat-stress conditions, respectively. An 80-DOC (day-old chick) Ross strain broiler was incubated in two broiler houses. The temperature and relative humidity were measured daily. The temperature and relative humidity were measured daily. Blood samples were collected once at the end of the fifth week, while performance measurements were recorded during the nursery and treatment periods. The data were analysed descriptively. Broiler chickens in the T20 treatment experienced ambient temperatures of 24–26°C with 74–80% relative humidity, whereas those in the T30 treatment experienced temperatures of 30–32°C with 75–78% relative humidity. The hematological values remained within normal physiological ranges: erythrocytes ranged from 3.16–3.41x106/mm3, haematocrit ranged from 25.47–27.02%, haemoglobin ranged from 10.27–10.43 g%, and leukocytes ranged from 8.65–15.40x103/mm3. Broiler chickens reared at high temperatures presented heat stress, as indicated by the ratio of heterophiles to lymphocytes being 0.59. Heat stress resulted in reduced feed consumption, lower body weight gain, decreased final body weight, and an increased feed conversion ratio.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of adding mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) frass to cow manure media on the productivity of Lumbricus rubellus and the quality of the vermicompost. A completely randomized design was employed with six treatments (T0–T5), consisting of increasing proportions of frass: T0 (100% cow manure), T1 (95:5), T2 (90:10), T3 (85:15), T4 (80:20), and T5 (75:25). The T2 treatment yielded the highest earthworm biomass gain (4.95 g), cocoon production (87.94 cocoons), and media reduction (198.83 g), all statistically significant (p<0.05). Vermicompost from each treatment was assessed through a growth trial using Ipomoea reptans (water spinach) under eight media combinations (U0–U7): U0 (100% soil), U1 (soil + NPK), and U2–U7 (soil + vermicompost from T0–T5, respectively). Among these, U7 (incorporating vermicompost from T5) demonstrated the highest nutrient content (C-organic 41.51%, N 1.99%, P₂O₅ 1.99%, K₂O 1.47%) and significantly enhanced plant growth (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that moderate frass supplementation (10%) optimizes earthworm productivity, while higher inclusion levels (25%) improve vermicompost agronomic value. Thus, moderate frass addition is recommended to optimize vermicompost production and worm performance.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Laatung S, Fuah AM, Masy’ud B, Sumantri C, Salundik. 2021. Species of white-tailed forest rats hunted and traded, their conservation status and habitat characteristics, in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2778-2784. The tradition of hunting and trading white-tailed forest rats, especially in North Sulawesi, has been practiced for generations. This poses a threat to the existence of these animals in their natural habitat leading to the extinction of some hunted species. In the past, studies on white-tailed rats being hunted and traded on Sulawesi is still lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the species of white-tailed forest rats hunted and traded, their conservation status and habitat characteristics in North Sulawesi. This study was conducted in April to June 2018 in Minahasa and Bolaang Mongondow District, North Sulawesi. The survey methods used involved visiting hunters, recording and taking pictures of the species of rats being hunted and traded. All samples of white-tailed rats were identified in the Zoological Laboratory, Indonesian Institute of Sciences Cibinong Bogor, West Java. Furthermore, ascertaining the general characteristics of the habitat was carried out using a general survey in locations known as distribution areas in North Sulawesi. The identification of 125 individuals consists of 8 species of white-tailed forest rats from 7 genera, which are commonly hunted. They include Rattus xanthurus (Gray, 1867), Bunomy fratrorum (Thomas, 1896), Lenomys meyeri (Jentink, 1879), Paruromys dominator (Thomas, 1921), Echiotrix leucura (Gray, 1879), Taeromys taerae (Sody, 1932), Maxomys hellwaldi (Jentink, 1879) and Maxomys musschenbrooki (Jentink, 1878). Four out of the eight species of white-tailed forest rats are protected species according to the IUCN Redlist. The white-tailed forest rats identified in this study, were caught in secondary forest and plantation, ranging from an altitude of 500 - 1.500 meters above sea level. Their main sources of feed include Areca catechu, Piper aduncum, Ficus spp., and Arenga piñnata.
