Abstract

The classroom is a place where the teacher, as an expert and the knower, teaches students through interactions influenced by several sociocultural backgrounds. Moreover, the teacher plays a role in mediating language learning processes by providing effective mediation. In brief, mediation can be defined as all objects delivered by the teacher to mediate the students to bring their current ability to the targeted performance. This current research serves to describe the features of mediation applied by English teacher in one lower secondary school in the EFL classroom context. This qualitative-based inquiry applied classroom observation and interviews as instruments to explore how the teacher mediated language learning in the classroom particularly for beginner-level students in one private school in Jakarta. The findings showed that the features of shared intention are the most salient to be mediated. This indicates that the teacher is very concerned with helping and facilitating the students to perform tasks. In addition, in mediating values, challenges, change and competence, the teacher creates engaging classroom discourses, selects particular tasks, and nurtures a positive classroom climate. Moreover, the teacher sets herself as a mediator as well as mediation as an ideal form of behavior and language model in the class. Keywords: English; foreign language; mediation; sociocultural view.

Abstract

Online remote teaching has been implemented to curb the spread of corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic. Due to this unprecedented situation, EFL writing teachers should immediately adjust their teaching approaches through utilizing technology. Given the fact that the utilization of technology is ubiquitous in language teaching, rapid changing into full online teaching certainly brings some adaptations. Teachers have to handle full online learning and apply technology tools they apparently have never used before within a very short time preparation. This current study explored EFL writing teachers’ confidence, including their perceptions, in response to emergency remote teaching during Covid-19 pandemic as an initial survey. Twenty-two teachers who teach academic writing courses from nine universities in Indonesia took part in a survey through online questionnaire modified from EFL TPACK assessment by Baser, Kopcha, and Ozden (2016). Descriptive and thematic approaches were used as data analysis. The findings show that the EFL writing teachers’ confidence ranged between somewhat confident to fairly confident in the seven areas of technology, content, and pedagogy. They believe that competences they have are sufficient in managing online EFL academic writing course during emergency remote teaching. Nonetheless, when technology is integrated to other areas, the confidence levels seemingly decrease. Awareness of technical material and pedagogic technological knowledge received the lowest scores from all fields. Integration of technology in the process of language teaching, requires teachers to always improve their TPACK abilities through various ways, and this must also be supported by adequate facilities and infrastructure.

Abstract

Along with the university policy for remote learning during the Covid-19 pandemic and the new normal era, learning management system (LMS) become one of various alternative system to handle online learning. However, its application needs to be well-prepared and well-designed. This present study was a need analysis as an initial stage in developing Moodle LMS-based EFL Materials for academic writing course at university. The participants were 67 students from academic writing course. A questionnaire was major instrument to find out the learning needs and context, accompanied by documentation to seek the activities and materials on the existing course. The results show the needs of academic writing course and the proposed EFL materials through Moodle LMS. Student-participants revealed that the course should be able to improve students’ writing skill in developing academic texts through essay development and research article. Moreover, process writing approach and genre-based approach become the most preferable approach for teaching with plenty of sample texts in PDF format. The students-participants also thought that teacher-feedback, individual project-based assessment, and real-time online session or synchronous mode are the best for online learning through LMS. The proposed Moodle LMS-based EFL materials apparently adopts the steps of process genre-based approach and a framework of Bloom’s digital taxonomy.

Argumentative writing plays an important role in academic writing at university level. However, learners mostly find that writing this essay a challenging and effortful task. This present study aims at exploring the structures of argumentative essay written by Indonesian EFL students from one university in Jakarta Indonesia. Moreover, it investigates their difficulty and constraints during composing the essay. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the authors selected writing assignment and questionnaire for collecting data. A layout of Toulmin model of arguments was used in analyzing the essays. The findings of the study show that the argumentative papers cover the main elements: claim (thesis statement), data, rebut, and rebuttal data using either in block pattern or point-by-point pattern. The elements show diverse in types. Logical analysis and explanation are the most frequently used on the papers. Though they present acceptable thesis with well-organized essay, some information is unrelated and data for supporting the claim are seemingly insufficient. In addition, the students think that this essay as difficult task. In general, lack of knowledge, vocabulary and practice cause the constraints. In specific level, the students report that giving argument, finding support and working on counterargument become source of difficulty and constraints.
