Abstract

Code-switching (CS) nowadays has been used by youth as a daily language among them and reflected in the “Halustik” movie. The aims of the research are to find out the category of CS spoken by the speakers and to explore their communication intentions to switch from one code to another in the movie which depicts urban life among young people. In the movie, the casts speak and communicate in four languages (Indonesian, English, Javanese, and Sundanese). Qualitative research data were collected by identifying the CS utterances from words, phrases, clauses, and sentences spoken by the main casts/characters in the movie. Next, the data were categorized, selected based on the categories of CS, and classified based on communicative intentions. The findings show that intra-sentential CS (60%) was the most used category of CS, followed by tag CS (4%), and inter-sentential CS (36%). Concerning the communicative intentions by the speakers, they alternate the language into another language since they are intended to talking about a certain topic (60%), quoting someone's words (11%), feeling empathy for something (expressing solidarity) (4%), providing interjection (4%), giving repetition for clarification (7%), clarifying the content of speech to the interlocutor (9%), and expressing a group identity (4%).

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic forced lecturers and students to stay at home and manage online remote teaching systems. This current study explored the adaptations to emergency online teaching on EFL Academic Writing courses in the aspect of practices and perception from both lecturers and students at university. A mixed-method approach was selected using an exploratory sequential design. The participants were a lecturer and 51 university students who registered for the course at a private university in Jakarta. The instruments were the lecturer’s documents from 14 meetings and an online questionnaire sequentially. The data were then analyzed using descriptive as well as thematic qualitative data analysis. The findings showed that the lecturer’s adaptations consisted of digital learning platforms, material delivery, teaching methods/techniques, and writing activity and assessment.  Some students assumed that attending online remote teaching was confusing, while others had no adjustments and called it a new and valuable experience. In general, they perceived positive perceptions toward teaching’s practices. WhatsApp mobile messenger with content materials in PDF format using Genre-based approach considers being very effective in managing Academic Writing courses for emergency remote teaching during the pandemic.

Abstract

Need analysis is a process of collecting information about the needs of teaching and making decisions about the course. This paper reported the learners’ needs on online-based EFL academic writing course during emergency remote teaching. The needs covered two dimensions: present situation analysis and learning situation analysis. The participants were the students who registered for the Academic Writing academic year 2020/2021. The information was collected through a writing test and online questionnaires taken in the initial meetings of the course. The findings showed that the student-participants were heterogeneous in educational background and academic experiences. They found themselves as high-motivated, independent learners with fairly confident writing skill. They confirmed an agreement to the learning objectives to write academic essays and research articles. They revealed that video conferencing and learning management systems were selected for facilitating learning. Moreover, individual work activity using text analysis and essay development was more preferable as learning activities and type of assessment. Students’ sample texts indicated that their writing was sufficient in content and organization though some inaccuracies occurred in grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. These present and learning situations found on need analysis can be considerations in making decisions of teaching system

Abstract

This study was grounded in a mixed-method design that aimed to analyze the differences between learning speaking taught using Instagram-mediated project-based learning and those taught using conventional techniques. In addition, this study was also conducted to investigate the challenges faced and explore the strategies given by students in solving problems in the application of Instagram-mediated project-based learning techniques. This study involved 12th-grade students who were randomly selected to be the control and experimental groups. The research instruments used were pre-speaking tests and post-speaking tests to measure the level of students' speaking skills and a questionnaire to investigate the challenges faced and explore the strategies provided by students in Instagram-mediated project-based learning conducted by the experimental group. The significance score was 0.000 smaller than 0.05. This confirmed that the Instagram-mediated project-based learning technique proved to have a significant difference. In qualitative stage of analysis, it was revealed that the challenges the students faced were categorized into language barriers, video making, and external factors. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the Instagram-mediated project-based learning technique was proven to be effective in improving students' speaking skills. Therefore, school policymakers can provide a wider internet network to support this learning technique. However, the results of this study recommended similar research on speaking skills in other materials in more depth with a wider scope. Keywords: Instagram; project-based learning; MALL; speaking; mixed-method.
